For an overnight shift that crosses a daylight saving time change, decide in advance whether the posted local start and end times stay fixed or the shift will be adjusted to preserve its planned elapsed duration. Tell affected workers which approach applies, record the hours actually worked—including a repeated hour in fall—and review weekly totals for overtime. The correct schedule and pay treatment depend on the workplace’s location, applicable agreements, and employer policy.

Confirm whether and when your workplace changes its clocks

Daylight saving time rules depend on location. In the United States, NIST lists the 2026 transitions as March 8 at 2 a.m. local time, when clocks move forward to 3 a.m., and November 1 at 2 a.m. local time, when clocks return to 1 a.m. and the 1 a.m. hour occurs twice. See NIST’s Daylight Saving Time Rules for the dates and scope.

Most U.S. areas observe daylight saving time, but Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and most of Arizona do not. The Navajo Nation does observe it. Verify the rule for the actual worksite rather than assuming that every location in a state or territory changes clocks.

Choose what the schedule is meant to preserve

There is no universal federal rule in the cited U.S. guidance requiring employers to keep wall-clock times fixed or to preserve a shift’s usual elapsed duration. Before the transition, make clear which outcome applies to the affected roster.

Scheduling approach What stays consistent What to clarify
Keep local start and end times fixed The posted clock times remain the same. The actual elapsed work period can be shorter in spring or longer in fall; explain how the changed hours will be recorded.
Adjust the start or end time to preserve elapsed duration The intended time worked stays consistent. Tell workers the revised clock time and follow applicable agreements and workplace policy.

The U.S. Department of Labor says the Fair Labor Standards Act does not address flexible schedules; alternative arrangements are a matter of agreement between the employer and employee or their representative. That does not replace any more protective state or local law, collective agreement, or employer policy.

Understand the skipped and repeated hours

Spring: the clock skips from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m.

When clocks move forward, a shift spanning the transition has one fewer elapsed clock hour than the same wall-clock interval on an ordinary night. If the roster is left unchanged, note the shorter actual work period accurately; if the shift is extended, tell workers how and when they should work the additional time.

Fall: the 1 a.m. hour happens twice

When clocks move back from 2 a.m. to 1 a.m., workers on a shift spanning the transition may work through the repeated hour. The timekeeping procedure should distinguish the two occurrences so the record reflects the time actually worked, rather than counting or omitting an hour based only on the displayed clock.

Record actual hours and check pay implications

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division says in its FLSA Hours Worked Advisor that “employees must be credited with all of the hours actually worked.” Its example describes an 11 p.m.–7:30 a.m. shift with a 30-minute unpaid lunch: the employee works seven hours on the spring-forward Sunday and nine hours on the fall-back Sunday, assuming the described shift is worked. Those figures illustrate that specific shift; they are not a general estimate for every overnight roster.

Use time records that capture the skipped or repeated hour and any actual difference from the planned schedule. The DOL says covered, nonexempt employees must receive at least one and one-half times their regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. Its federal night-work guidance says extra pay for night shifts is a matter of agreement. These federal statements do not determine the treatment of every worker or jurisdiction; check applicable state and local rules, contracts, and workplace policies. See the DOL’s Overtime Pay and Night Work guidance.

Use a pre-transition checklist

  1. Confirm the worksite’s current daylight saving rule and transition date.
  2. Identify every shift whose actual work period crosses the clock change, including which hour is skipped or repeated.
  3. Choose whether wall-clock start and end times remain fixed or the roster will be adjusted to preserve elapsed duration.
  4. Notify affected workers of the schedule and timekeeping procedure, following applicable agreements and policies.
  5. Ensure records capture actual time worked and the repeated hour, where applicable.
  6. Review each affected employee’s workweek total and apply the relevant overtime, jurisdictional, and contractual rules.

Why the location matters

The federal guidance above is U.S.-specific and does not establish how daylight saving time affects schedules or pay in other countries. For example, Australia’s Fair Work Ombudsman says that an overnight worker paid by the clock may work one hour less but still receive payment for the full shift when daylight saving time begins. That example applies to the employment arrangement described in the Ombudsman’s Australian guidance; it should not be treated as a U.S. rule.
