In WooCommerce, categories answer “Where does this product belong?”, attributes describe its structured properties, and tags provide flexible secondary labels. Use categories for catalog navigation, global attributes for reusable characteristics and filtering, custom attributes for genuinely one-off details, and tags sparingly for cross-category groupings.
The steps below apply to the established WooCommerce product editor. WooCommerce also documents a newer product editor in beta, so button placement and labels may differ by WordPress version, theme, language, and enabled features. See WooCommerce’s new product editor documentation if your screen looks different.
Categories, tags, and attributes: what is the difference?
WooCommerce treats all three as product taxonomies, but they solve different catalog problems.
| Feature | Categories | Tags | Attributes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main role | Broad catalog organization | Flexible labels and associations | Structured product properties |
| Hierarchical? | Yes; parent and child categories | No | Terms are generally flat |
| Required? | WooCommerce can use a default category if none is selected | No | No, unless needed for variations or filtering |
| Examples | Shoes, Men’s Shoes, Running Shoes | Waterproof, Bestseller, Gift Idea | Color, Size, Material |
| Reusable? | Yes | Yes | Yes when created globally |
| Used for variations? | No | No | Yes |
| Common filtering use | Category filters | Tag filters | Attribute filters |
| Best storefront use | Primary catalog navigation | Optional secondary grouping | Product information, filters, and selectors |
For example, a shirt might belong to Clothing → Shirts, have tags such as New Arrival and Gift Idea, and use the global attributes Color → Blue and Size → Large.

Plan the product taxonomy before adding terms
Decide the role of each piece of information before creating it:
- Category: the stable, shopper-facing department or browse path.
- Global attribute: a repeatable characteristic used across products, such as Color, Size, or Material.
- Custom attribute: a descriptive property unique to one product.
- Variation: a purchasable combination that needs its own price, SKU, stock, image, shipping behavior, or other variation-specific data.
- Tag: a flexible cross-category label, collection, campaign, or editorial grouping.
Use customer-facing vocabulary and establish naming rules. For example, choose one canonical term such as Navy rather than creating overlapping values such as Blue, Dark Blue, and Blue Navy. Singular attribute names such as Color and Material are usually easier to manage.
How to add WooCommerce product categories
Create a category
- In WordPress, go to Products → Categories.
- Under Add new category, enter the category Name.
- Optionally enter a Slug. This becomes part of the category URL and should be short and stable.
- Choose a Parent category if this is a subcategory.
- Optionally add a Description.
- Choose the available Display type, bearing in mind that the theme determines how catalog pages actually look.
- Select Add new category.
Categories can have one parent and multiple children, and subcategories can be nested. Keep the structure reasonably simple: too many layers make browsing harder and increase maintenance.
Create a subcategory
Follow the same process, but select the existing parent in Parent category. For example, create Nightstands with Bedroom as its parent under Furniture.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAssign categories to a product
- Go to Products → All Products.
- Select Edit for an existing product, or create a product.
- In the product editor’s Categories section, select one or more categories.
- Save or update the product.
A product may belong to multiple categories, but assign multiple categories only when each creates a useful browsing relationship. A clear primary catalog path is usually easier for customers and administrators to understand.
Put a category in site navigation
Creating a product category does not automatically place it in the header or main menu. Add it separately to the relevant navigation:

How to add WooCommerce product tags
Create a tag centrally
- Go to Products → Tags.
- Enter a tag Name.
- Optionally enter a Slug and Description.
- Select Add new tag.
Assign a tag while editing a product
- Open the product editor.
- Find the Product tags or Tags field.
- Type the tag name.
- Select an existing tag, or use Add to create it.
- Save or update the product.
Useful tags might include New Arrival, Limited Edition, Eco-Friendly, Gift for Dad, or Back in Stock. Do not turn tags into an uncontrolled second category system. Near-duplicates make tag archives, filters, and administration inconsistent.

Global attributes are managed centrally and can be reused across products. They are the better choice when the same concept may be filtered, used for variations, reported on, or updated consistently later.
Create the attribute
- Go to Products → Attributes.
- Enter the attribute Name, such as Color, Size, or Material.
- Optionally enter a Slug.
- Choose the available Type.
- Decide whether to enable Archives. This setting does not guarantee that your theme or SEO configuration will expose or index useful archive pages.
- Choose the Default sort order.
- Select Add attribute.
WooCommerce can sort terms by name, numeric name, term ID, or custom ordering. Numeric ordering is useful for sizes such as 6, 8, 10, and 12; custom ordering is useful when shoppers expect a sequence such as Small, Medium, Large.
Add attribute terms
- Select Configure terms beside the new attribute.
- Enter a term such as Red, Blue, or Green.
- Optionally enter a slug and description.
- If your selected attribute type supports it, configure a color or image.
- Select Add new [attribute name] and repeat for the remaining terms.
The attribute name alone is not enough. Terms are the values products can actually use.
How to add a global attribute to a product
- Go to Products → Add Product, or edit an existing product.
- In Product data, open Attributes.
- Choose Add existing.
- Select the global attribute.
- In Values, choose the relevant terms. Use Select all only when every existing term applies.
- Enable Visible on the product page if shoppers should see it in the product’s additional information.
- For a variable product, enable Used for variations if the terms define purchasable choices.
- Select Save attributes, then update the product.
The attribute must be added to the product and saved before it can be used reliably in the variation interface. In the newer product editor, the same concepts may appear in different sections.

How to add a one-off custom attribute
Use a custom product-level attribute when the information is genuinely unique to one product and does not belong in the store-wide vocabulary.
- Edit the product.
- Open Product data → Attributes.
- Select Add new.
- Enter the attribute name.
- Enter multiple values separated by the pipe character, for example:
Cotton | Linen | Wool - Choose whether it should be visible on the product page.
- If applicable, choose whether it is used for variations.
- Save the attributes and update the product.
A custom attribute exists only on that product. It is not equivalent to a global attribute for store-wide filtering, consistent naming, or centralized management.
How attributes create variations
An attribute is data; a variation is a purchasable product configuration. Adding Color: Red | Blue does not by itself create Red and Blue variants.
- Set the product type to Variable product.
- Add the relevant global or custom attributes.
- Select the terms that should be available.
- Enable Used for variations.
- Save the attributes.
- Open Variations.
- Choose Generate variations, or add variations manually.
- Set each variation’s price and required data, such as SKU, stock, and image.
- Save or update the product.
If a product has four colors and six sizes, generating every combination creates 24 variations. Use variations only when combinations need separate operational data. For optional personalization or extras that do not need their own SKU or stock, consider a product add-on instead; WooCommerce Product Add-Ons supports fields such as checkboxes, text inputs, uploads, quantity fields, and date pickers.
How to use attributes for product filters
Global attributes are generally the best foundation for filters such as Color, Size, and Material. A filter works only when products use the same global attribute and terms consistently.
Depending on your WooCommerce version, theme, and configuration, storefront filtering may use newer Product Filter Blocks and Products Collection functionality, older widgets or shortcodes, or an extension. Creating an attribute does not automatically make a filter appear in every shop layout. Add and configure the relevant filter control, then verify it on the actual category and shop pages.

Buzzer can be set to mute to allow for a quiet operation.(Note: It does not work with square POS / Divalto / DoorDash / Lightspeed POS system)
Common reasons a filter returns no products include:
- Products were not assigned the relevant terms.
- Staff used inconsistent names or separate custom attributes.
- The filter targets a global attribute while products use product-level custom attributes.
- The theme or block layout does not contain the filter.
- Caching has not refreshed.
- The filter is querying a different product archive or collection.
WooCommerce’s Product Filters documentation explains supported filter setups, including configurations for products displayed through built-in shortcodes.
Troubleshooting common problems
The attribute is missing from the product
Confirm that you used Add existing or Add new, selected terms in Values, saved the attribute row, and updated the product. Also check that you are editing the correct site and language. Multilingual, catalog, and product-editing plugins can alter the interface.
The attribute appears but customers cannot choose it
For a selectable option, the product must be a Variable product; terms must be selected; Used for variations must be enabled; and variations must be created. Each required variation should have a price and any necessary stock settings. See WooCommerce’s variable-product documentation.
A variation does not appear
Check that the variation uses valid combinations of the saved attribute terms, has the required product data, and is enabled for purchase. An attribute listed as visible information but not marked for variation use cannot define that variation.
A global term change caused unexpected product data
Global attributes centralize the shared vocabulary, but product assignments, variation combinations, swatches, filters, and customer-facing copy still need review after a rename or restructuring.

The category exists but is not in the menu
Taxonomy creation and navigation placement are separate tasks. Add the category to the classic menu or block-theme Navigation controls, then test the link.
The catalog is too large for manual editing
For hundreds or thousands of products, use WooCommerce’s bulk editing and import/export tools. A product-management extension may help with larger workflows, but it is unnecessary for a small catalog.
When do you need a plugin or extension?
WooCommerce core is sufficient for ordinary categories, tags, global and custom attributes, and basic variable products. Consider an extension only for a specific limitation:
- Advanced filtering: use a filtering extension when the core blocks, widgets, shortcodes, or theme controls do not provide the required storefront experience.
- Large-catalog administration: use a product manager or bulk editor when staff must update hundreds or thousands of products efficiently.
- Optional personalization: use product add-ons when customers need extras or inputs that should not become full variations.
Do not buy an extension merely to create a category, tag, or basic global attribute.

Quick decision checklist
- Main browseable department? Category.
- Reusable product characteristic? Global attribute.
- Product-specific characteristic? Custom attribute.
- Separate stock, price, SKU, image, or shipping behavior? Variation.
- Flexible cross-category label? Tag.
- Optional paid customization? Add-on.
Categories, tags, and attributes primarily improve catalog organization, product information, filtering, and configuration. They are not automatic SEO tools: archive visibility, indexing, theme behavior, and SEO settings determine whether taxonomy URLs have any search benefit.
