How to Add a Bank Account to PayPal: U.S. Guide

A current U.S. guide to adding, confirming, using, and removing a bank account in PayPal, including microdeposit timing, fees, limits, app paths, and troubleshooting.

For a U.S. PayPal account, go to Wallet → Link a card or bank → Link a bank account, select your bank, and complete either instant verification or manual linking. With manual linking, PayPal sends two temporary deposits of $0.01 to $0.99 each, usually within three business days. You then enter the exact amounts in PayPal to confirm the account.

This guide is for U.S. personal PayPal accounts. PayPal’s supported banks, account requirements, fees, and app navigation can differ in other countries and for business accounts.

How to Add a Bank Account to PayPal

Adding a bank account connects it to PayPal as a funding and transfer method. It can let you pay eligible merchants, add money to your PayPal Balance where that feature is available, and transfer PayPal funds to your bank. It does not replace your bank account, and it is not the same as opening or funding a PayPal Balance account.

On PayPal.com, the current U.S. path is Wallet → Link a card or bank → Link a bank account. You can then search for your bank and choose instant verification or, if PayPal offers it, Link your bank another way for manual verification. See PayPal’s current linking instructions.

  • Gift Cards are shipped active and ready for use.
  • This card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Funds do not expire. If available funds remain on your card after the valid thru date has passed, please call customer service for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout. No fees after purchase.
  • To access your card information safely, type the complete website address shown on your Gift Card (MyGift.GiftCardMall.com) directly into your browser's address bar. Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
  • To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
  • Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.

Before you start

Have the following ready:

  • A bank account at a U.S. bank. This requirement applies to U.S. PayPal accounts; it is not a universal rule for every country.
  • A legal name that matches the name on your PayPal account. PayPal may reject a U.S. bank-linking attempt when the names do not match.
  • Your bank’s routing number and account number if you plan to link manually.
  • Access to your bank’s online transaction history or statement if PayPal sends microdeposits.
  • A bank account that PayPal supports. PayPal warns that many online-only and prepaid accounts may be incompatible, although that does not mean every online bank is automatically excluded.

A bank account is different from a debit card. If you want to add a card, use PayPal’s separate debit or credit card linking flow.

How to add a bank account on PayPal.com

  1. Sign in to PayPal.
  2. Open Wallet.
  3. Select Link a card or bank.
  4. Select Link a bank account.
  5. Search for your bank or select it from the list.
  6. Follow the prompts for instant verification. If you prefer manual linking, or instant verification is unavailable, select Link your bank another way if that option appears.
  7. For manual linking, enter the requested routing and account information and select Agree and Link.
  8. Complete any confirmation step PayPal displays.

If instant verification succeeds, PayPal may confirm the bank during the linking process. Manual linking is not complete until you confirm the deposits described below. PayPal does not offer both methods for every bank or account, so the choices visible in your Wallet determine what is available.

How to add a bank account in the PayPal app

PayPal’s app labels and navigation can vary by app version, account type, and region. Look for Accounts, Banks and cards, or Linked banks and cards.

One current path is:

  1. Open the PayPal app.
  2. Tap Accounts.
  3. Tap the + beside Banks and cards.
  4. Tap Banks.
  5. Search for your bank or select it from the list.
  6. Follow the verification prompts.

PayPal also shows this alternate path in some versions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Tap Me.
  2. Tap Accounts.
  3. Tap the + beside Linked banks and cards.
  4. Tap Banks.
  5. Follow the prompts to connect and verify the account.

These app variations are reflected in PayPal’s published app instructions. If you cannot find the option in the app, sign in at PayPal.com in a browser and use the Wallet path.

Instant verification or manual linking?

Method What you need Speed Trade-offs
Instant verification Access to your bank’s login flow through PayPal Usually faster and may confirm the account during setup PayPal says a third-party provider may verify the bank details and, when needed, check balance and transaction information. Review the permissions and remove related permissions in PayPal Settings if appropriate.
Manual linking Routing number, account number, and access to the bank’s transaction history Usually up to three business days for the deposits Does not require the instant bank-login flow, but you must wait for and accurately enter two small deposits. PayPal may not offer manual linking for every bank or account.

PayPal does not identify the third-party provider on the cited help page. If you use instant verification, start from the official PayPal app or type PayPal.com directly into your browser. Never give your bank login credentials to someone who contacts you claiming to be PayPal support.

How to confirm a manually linked bank account

When you link manually, PayPal sends two temporary deposits to the bank account. Each deposit is between $0.01 and $0.99 USD, and PayPal says they normally arrive within three business days. Business days generally do not include weekends and holidays.

  1. Wait the stated period, then check your bank’s online transaction history or statement.
  2. Find the two small PayPal deposits and note their exact amounts.
  3. Return to PayPal and open Wallet.
  4. Select the manually linked bank account.
  5. Enter the exact amounts of both deposits.
  6. Select Submit.

PayPal also makes one temporary debit equal to the combined value of the two deposits. The deposits and debit are temporary; check the transaction details rather than assuming the amounts from memory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the deposits appear as one amount

Some banks combine the two deposits into a single transaction. If that happens, do not guess at the individual amounts. PayPal says to contact it or try instant linking. If Wallet offers an option to resend the deposits, you can use that after checking that the bank information is correct.

  • Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.

Do not guess repeatedly

Three incorrect deposit attempts can disable and remove the bank account from PayPal. If that happens, contact PayPal to ask about reactivation. PayPal’s bank-confirmation instructions cover the deposit process and this lockout risk.

Linking is not the same as confirming

Linking adds the bank account to your PayPal Wallet. Confirming verifies that you control the account. A bank that appears in Wallet may still show as unconfirmed, especially when you used manual linking.

PayPal says a bank account must be confirmed before it can be used to make payments. However, the exact requirements can vary by account and transaction. Instant verification may confirm the bank without microdeposits; manual linking requires the deposit-confirmation step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What you can do after adding the bank

Pay for a purchase with the bank account

At checkout, select the linked bank account as the payment method if PayPal and the merchant make it available. A bank-funded payment may appear to complete quickly to the seller while PayPal waits for the bank transfer to clear. PayPal says this clearing process can take two to five business days, depending on the transaction and bank processing.

If the bank rejects the payment, PayPal may try the transfer again, up to two times. Depending on the transaction, PayPal may also use a backup payment method. If the backup method fails, your PayPal balance could become negative, and your bank could charge a fee. Keep enough money in the selected account and check the funding source before completing a payment. PayPal explains this process in its bank-account payment guidance.

Add money from the bank to PayPal

Linking a bank does not automatically move money into PayPal. To add money after the bank is linked and confirmed:

  • On the website: open Wallet → Transfer Money → Add money from your bank or debit card.
  • In the app: tap Me → Add Money, then select the bank or debit card.

Bank-funded additions usually take up to five business days. PayPal may offer an instant option in some cases. PayPal lists debit-card addition limits of up to $5,000 per day, $10,000 per week, and $20,000 per month, but those figures apply to adding money with a debit card and should not be treated as the limits for bank-account transfers. See PayPal’s add-money instructions for the options available to your account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Transfer PayPal funds to the bank

If your goal is to move money out of PayPal, you do not need to add money to your Balance. For a U.S. personal account:

  1. Go to Wallet.
  2. Select Transfer Money.
  3. Select Transfer to your bank.
  4. Choose Instant Transfer or Standard Transfer.
  5. Review the destination, amount, fee, and estimated arrival time, then follow the instructions.

PayPal’s withdrawal instructions state that standard transfers to an eligible bank generally take one to three business days and have no fee when no currency conversion is involved. Instant transfers generally arrive within minutes, although PayPal says processing can vary by bank and may take up to 30 minutes.

  • This card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Funds do not expire. If available funds remain on your card after the valid thru date has passed, please call customer service for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout. No fees after purchase.
  • Double check if the URL/website is genuine before entering card details online. Do not provide any gift card details (example: claim code) to someone you do not know or trust. There are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
  • If you believe that your Card has been lost or stolen, notify Mastercard immediately by calling 1-833-791-7288. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
  • Use your Mastercard Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Mastercard debit cards are accepted, including online. Your Amazon.com Balance cannot be used to purchase Mastercard gift cards.

Current U.S. personal-account withdrawal fees and limits

PayPal’s U.S. consumer fee table currently lists an instant bank-transfer fee of 1.75%, with a U.S.-dollar minimum of $0.25 and maximum of $25. The published maximum for an instant bank transfer is up to $25,000 per transaction, but your account or transaction may have a lower limit or may not qualify for Instant Transfer.

Weekends and holidays can delay the arrival of a transfer by at least one business day. These are U.S. personal-account figures shown on PayPal’s fee information, listed as last updated May 19, 2026; fees, limits, eligibility, and timing can change. Always check the amount and fee displayed in PayPal before confirming a transfer. Currency conversion or other transaction-specific conditions can change the result.

How many bank accounts can you link?

PayPal’s current U.S. help information says you can have up to eight linked bank accounts active at once. It also says a bank account cannot be linked to more than three PayPal accounts over its lifetime. PayPal may approve use of the same bank on a second PayPal account in some circumstances, but that is not guaranteed; the result will be shown during the linking process.

A bank may also be rejected if it is already connected to a PayPal account that is limited or has a negative balance. If you have used the bank with an old PayPal account, check that account before repeatedly trying to link it to a new one.

Why PayPal will not link your bank

Use the symptom that best matches what you see. PayPal lists many of these causes in its U.S. bank-linking troubleshooting guidance.

What you see Likely cause or next step
We can’t link this bank Confirm that the bank is in the United States, the legal name matches your PayPal name, and the account is compatible. Try the manual option if PayPal offers it.
The bank is not listed Search carefully and look for Link your bank another way. If no manual route appears, the bank may not be supported for your account.
The bank login works, but PayPal returns to the beginning Check that you can sign in to the bank independently, update the PayPal app, and try PayPal.com in a desktop or mobile browser. Use manual linking if it is offered. The browser step is a practical troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed PayPal fix.
Name mismatch Correct the PayPal account name when appropriate, or remove and re-add the bank after a legal name change. PayPal says a bank whose name has changed must be removed and added again.
The account is online-only or prepaid PayPal says many online-only and prepaid accounts may be incompatible. Try a compatible traditional bank account or another eligible payment method. Do not assume that every online bank fails.
The bank was previously used with PayPal Check the three-PayPal-account lifetime restriction and whether the older account is limited or has a negative balance.
Manual verification failed Recheck the deposit amounts, but do not keep guessing. Three incorrect attempts can disable and remove the bank; contact PayPal afterward.
PayPal says the bank is already linked Check other PayPal accounts you own. If you remove the bank from an old account, first consider pending payments, subscriptions, disputes, and transfers.
The account was previously rejected or disappeared PayPal may have removed it after a bank decline or stop-payment notice. Contact PayPal rather than repeatedly retrying the same account.

What to do if the microdeposits do not arrive

  1. Wait the full three-business-day period.
  2. Check pending transactions as well as completed transactions in your bank account.
  3. Search the bank’s transaction descriptions for PayPal and check whether the bank combined the deposits.
  4. Confirm that the routing number and account number entered in PayPal were correct.
  5. Look in PayPal Wallet for an option to resend the deposits.
  6. If the bank combined the deposits, contact PayPal or use instant linking if it is available.

Do not enter guessed amounts. Three wrong entries can disable and remove the bank account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to remove or replace a bank account

On PayPal’s website:

  1. Open Wallet.
  2. Select the bank account.
  3. Click Remove bank.

PayPal may not let you remove the account while a payment or transfer is pending or processing. An account limitation can also block removal. Wait until the transaction completes or resolve the limitation, then try again. See PayPal’s bank-removal instructions.

Removing the bank revokes authorization for transactions initiated after removal, but it does not necessarily cancel charges that were already authorized. Previously initiated transfers, pending seller transactions, automatic payments, disputes, and other obligations may continue to be processed. Review your automatic payments and pending activity before unlinking the account. PayPal’s U.S. User Agreement, listed as updated June 29, 2026, describes these authorization consequences.

Replacing a bank after a legal name change

If the name on the bank account changed after marriage, divorce, or another legal name change, PayPal says to remove the bank and add it again using the updated information. The bank and PayPal account names should match before you retry the linking process. See PayPal’s name-change instructions.

Security and privacy when linking a bank

  • Start from the official PayPal app or type PayPal.com directly into the browser. Do not use an unsolicited login link from an email, text message, or social-media message.
  • Never send your bank username, password, one-time code, or security answers to a person claiming to be PayPal support.
  • If you choose instant verification, understand that PayPal says a third-party provider may verify the bank details and, when needed, check balance and transaction information.
  • Review the permissions associated with the instant-verification connection. PayPal says related permissions can be removed in Settings.
  • If you do not want to use the bank-login verification flow, choose manual linking when PayPal offers it. Manual linking takes longer and requires accurate routing and account information.

Instant verification should not be described as universally safe or risk-free. The practical choice is between faster setup and the information-access trade-off explained in PayPal’s flow. Manual linking reduces reliance on that login flow but still requires you to provide bank-account details to PayPal.

Personal versus business PayPal accounts

This guide focuses on personal accounts. PayPal has separate personal and business account types, and business navigation, balances, limits, and available features can differ. Business users should verify the instructions in PayPal’s Business Help Center.

Do not confuse an external bank account that you link to PayPal with a PayPal-assigned routing number and account number. Those can be separate products associated with a PayPal Balance or business-account service and are not the same as your outside bank account. PayPal provides separate information about business account and routing numbers.

Outside the United States?

Do not apply the U.S. instructions, bank requirements, fees, or limits automatically to an international PayPal account. The supported bank types, local account identifiers, confirmation process, withdrawal choices, and fees depend on the country. Open the PayPal Help Center for your account’s country and use the Wallet or Banks and cards instructions shown there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add a bank account to PayPal without a debit card?

Yes. A debit card is not required to link a bank account. Use Wallet → Link a card or bank → Link a bank account on PayPal.com, then complete instant or manual verification. A debit card uses a separate linking process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I have to confirm my bank account?

If you link manually, yes: PayPal sends two small deposits and requires the exact amounts for confirmation. PayPal says a bank must be confirmed before it can be used to make payments. Instant verification may confirm the account during setup, and other requirements can vary by account and transaction.

How long do PayPal’s small deposits take?

PayPal says the two deposits, each between $0.01 and $0.99, normally arrive within three business days. Check pending and completed transactions, and remember that weekends and holidays may not count as business days.

What if I receive only one deposit, or my bank combines them?

Do not guess the two amounts. Check whether your bank combined the deposits into one transaction, then contact PayPal or use instant linking if it is available. If Wallet offers a resend option, you can use it after confirming your bank details.

Why is my bank not listed in PayPal?

Search for the bank and look for Link your bank another way. If PayPal does not offer manual linking, the bank may not be supported for your account. PayPal also warns that many online-only and prepaid accounts may be incompatible.

Can I link the same bank account to two PayPal accounts?

Possibly, but it is not guaranteed. PayPal says a bank account cannot be linked to more than three PayPal accounts over its lifetime, and PayPal may approve the same bank on a second account only in some circumstances. A bank tied to a limited or negative-balance account may be rejected.

How many bank accounts can I link to PayPal?

PayPal’s current U.S. help information says up to eight linked bank accounts can be active at once. Account-specific restrictions can still affect whether a particular bank can be added.

Can I use an online-only bank or a savings account?

PayPal determines eligibility during the linking flow. PayPal says many online-only and prepaid accounts may be incompatible, but it does not say every online bank is unsupported. For a savings account, select the account type PayPal presents; do not assume every savings account is eligible.

Can I use PayPal without a bank account?

Often, yes. PayPal supports other eligible payment methods, including debit cards, credit cards, and, where available, a PayPal balance. A bank account is not necessarily required if you already have another accepted funding source.

Is adding a bank account to PayPal free?

PayPal does not generally charge simply for linking a bank account. Transfer and payment costs are separate. For U.S. personal accounts, PayPal currently lists standard bank withdrawals as free when no currency conversion applies, while Instant Transfer currently costs 1.75%, subject to a $0.25 minimum and $25 maximum for U.S.-dollar transfers. Check the fee shown before confirming.

How do I transfer PayPal money to my bank?

Open Wallet → Transfer Money → Transfer to your bank, choose Standard Transfer or Instant Transfer, and follow the prompts. Standard transfers generally take one to three business days; instant transfers generally arrive within minutes when your account and bank are eligible.

Can I remove a bank account while a payment is pending?

Usually not. PayPal may block removal while a payment or transfer is pending or processing, and an account limitation can also prevent removal. Even after removal, previously authorized payments and initiated transactions may continue to process.

What happens if a PayPal payment funded by my bank fails?

PayPal may retry the bank transfer, up to two times, and may use a backup payment method depending on the transaction. If the backup method also fails, your PayPal balance could become negative and your bank could charge a fee.
