Sign in and follow the prompts; PayPal requires the card to be activated before you use it.
Activate the card online
- Go to paypal.com/activatecard.
- Log in to your PayPal account and enter the information requested on screen.
- Select Activate Card.
PayPal does not publish one fixed list of information required for every activation. Follow the prompts in your account rather than guessing which details you will need. PayPal’s cardholder agreement says personal information is required to verify your identity.

Activate it in the PayPal app
- Tap PayPal Balance.
- Select PayPal Debit Card.
- Tap Activate Card and follow any prompts shown.
Activate by phone
Call PayPal’s 24-hour automated activation line at 1-800-314-8298 and follow the prompts.
Set or change your card PIN
PIN management is separate from the basic activation instructions. If you need to set or change your four-digit PIN, use the card-management settings:

- To access your card information safely, type the complete website address shown on your Gift Card (MyGift.GiftCardMall.com) directly into your browser's address bar. Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
- To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
- Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.
- Website: Open your Dashboard’s PayPal Debit Card, choose Manage Card, and edit the PIN section.
- App: Tap Accounts, then PayPal Balance, PayPal Debit Card, Manage card, and Change PIN.
PayPal says a changed PIN takes effect immediately. The cardholder agreement describes establishing a PIN as part of online activation, while the activation help gives shorter steps; the prompts may not look the same for every account. If the expected PIN option does not appear, check the card-management settings while signed in.
Check that you have the right PayPal card instructions
These steps apply to the U.S. consumer PayPal Debit Card, which is linked to a PayPal balance. PayPal says a PayPal Balance account is required; its application guidance also lists an active personal PayPal account in good standing and U.S. identity and address details. If you have not requested or received a card, you may need to apply for one instead of activating it.

PayPal has separate guidance for its U.S. Business Debit Mastercard and for cards in other regions. For example, the UK help page also describes website and app activation, but matching steps do not establish the same eligibility or terms. Use instructions for your card and country rather than substituting the consumer-card process for a business card.

- Double check if the URL/website is genuine before entering card details online. Do not provide any gift card details (example: claim code) to someone you do not know or trust. There are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
- If you believe that your Card has been lost or stolen, notify Mastercard immediately by calling 1-833-791-7288. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
- Use your Mastercard Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Mastercard debit cards are accepted, including online. Your Amazon.com Balance cannot be used to purchase Mastercard gift cards.
If activation does not work
- Make sure you are signed in to the PayPal account associated with the card, then follow the information prompts shown there.
- Try one of PayPal’s other published activation channels: the website, app, or automated phone line.
- For a PIN issue, open the card-management settings rather than assuming the activation screen contains the same controls for every account.
- Check PayPal’s current official help page for the latest interface labels and contact details; the account UI and card terms can change.
