To accept UPI at a shop, sign up with a merchant payment provider, complete its verification, link the bank account where you want to receive funds, and display the merchant QR code it issues. A soundbox or POS terminal is optional; businesses taking payment online or remotely can consider a gateway, dynamic QR, or payment links instead.
Choose how customers will pay
Start with the payment situation you need to support. For a counter or service business, a merchant QR is the simplest starting point. For website or app checkout, or for collecting payment remotely, look at a payment gateway, dynamic QR, or payment links.

How to set up a merchant UPI QR
- Choose a merchant provider. Compare the provider’s onboarding process, charges for the specific service, reporting and reconciliation tools, settlement arrangements, and customer support.
- Register and complete verification. Be ready to provide business details and the identity or KYC information the provider requests, then link the bank account intended to receive payments. Paytm’s example flow names PAN and Aadhaar, but requirements can vary by provider and merchant. Its FAQ describes registration and QR or VPA generation at How to become a UPI merchant?
- Get and display the merchant-issued QR. Put it where customers can scan it at checkout. A standee or sticker can make it easier to display, but the physical display item is not itself the payment destination: use the QR issued for your merchant account.
- Check a payment and your records. Use the provider’s merchant tools to verify incoming payments and review transaction records and settlement details. Confirm the provider’s instructions for resolving a payment that appears pending or is missing from your records.
- Add equipment only if it fits the workflow. If staff need audible confirmations, ask about compatible soundboxes and their full costs. A provider’s POS device may suit a business that also needs card acceptance.
Do you need a soundbox or POS device?
No. A merchant QR is the basic in-store acceptance method; neither a soundbox nor a POS device is required simply to receive UPI payments. A soundbox can help staff notice payment confirmations at a busy counter, while a POS device is worth considering when the business needs broader payment acceptance.

PhonePe lists a SmartSpeaker with multilingual payment confirmations. Paytm directs existing merchants to its dashboard to order Soundbox and QR merchandise. Check compatibility with your merchant account and obtain current written terms for the device, rental or subscription, and any other recurring charges before ordering. Accepting UPI online or remotely
A counter QR is designed for in-person checkout. If customers pay through a website, app, or remotely, consider a payment gateway, a dynamic QR, or a payment link. Compare the setup or integration requirements, payment methods offered, transaction charges, settlement and reporting, and support for the exact service you plan to use. Check fees and settlement terms before launch
Do not assume all merchant products or payment routes have identical fees. Paytm for Business’s public pricing page displays 0% UPI MDR for its listed SME pricing, and defines a “Small Merchant” as a business with previous financial-year turnover below ₹20 lakh. Before you start accepting payments, confirm the applicable transaction pricing, settlement schedule, reporting access, support arrangements, and any equipment or service charges in writing. Public provider pages do not establish comparable current costs for soundboxes, QR stands, or POS devices, so request a current schedule from the provider rather than relying on an assumed price.

PhonePe says its offline merchants can accept payments from major UPI apps and cites access to its “72+ crore user base.” That is a PhonePe platform claim, not an estimate of how many customers an individual shop will reach.
