To accept payments from customers across Europe, choose an acquiring bank, payment service provider (PSP), or combination that supports your business’s home country, the markets you sell into, the currencies you accept, and the payment methods available to those customers. For euro payments, SEPA bank transfers or direct debits may fit invoice or recurring-payment flows. Check coverage, checkout requirements, fees, settlement terms, security responsibilities, and the separate VAT rules for your sales before choosing.
Choose a payment route that fits your business
There is no single payment method that works best for every European customer. Your choice depends on where your business is established, where your customers are, what you sell, whether sales are online or in person, and whether payments are one-off or recurring. Your Europe describes three broad routes for online sellers:
| Route | What it does | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional acquiring | An acquiring or merchant bank contracts with your business to accept card payments. It may use processors for transaction processing, settlement, and risk management. | When you want a bank-based card-acquiring arrangement and can manage any separate processing relationships involved. |
| Alternative payment provider | Offers a particular non-card payment solution, such as a voucher service. | When a specific alternative method is important to your customers or sales model. |
| Online PSP | Provides a gateway to multiple traditional and alternative methods, often with a configurable checkout page. | When you want one service to connect your online store to several payment methods or markets. |
These categories can overlap in practice. Compare the specific services and responsibilities in each provider’s terms, rather than relying on the label alone. Your Europe’s online-shop payment guidance explains the routes and cross-border considerations.
Check country, currency, and method coverage
Make a list of your establishment country, the countries where you expect to sell, the currencies you plan to accept, and the payment methods your checkout needs. Ask each provider to confirm its availability for each of those markets. A single cross-border PSP may be practical for a small business serving countries with different local preferences, but do not assume that every provider supports every country, currency, or payment method on the same terms.

Your Europe says PSPs must be registered in their home EU member state and with the European Banking Authority. Check the relevant national register when assessing a provider; the official guide links to the registers and explains cross-border PSP selection. Registration is a check on status, not a substitute for comparing the provider’s actual coverage and contract.
Decide whether SEPA bank payments fit
SEPA harmonises cashless euro payments across the EU and additional countries and territories. It covers euro credit transfers, direct debits, and card payments; it is not another name for the euro area, and not every SEPA country uses the euro. The European Commission says cross-border electronic payments in euro are made under the same basic conditions as domestic payments. See the Commission’s SEPA overview for the scheme’s scope and payment types.
Credit transfers for invoices
With a credit transfer, the customer instructs their bank or payment service to send money to your business. This can suit an invoice or a purchase where the customer is comfortable initiating a bank payment. Confirm how your bank or PSP identifies incoming payments and how long it takes for your workflow to treat a payment as received.

Direct debits for collections
With a direct debit, your business initiates collection from the customer’s account under the applicable authorization and scheme arrangements. This can suit recurring collections, but it depends on your provider, customer-country support, and the relevant scheme requirements. Do not assume that a bank account or PSP offers every SEPA scheme or supports every customer location. The European Payments Council participant registers list legal entities adhering to its SEPA schemes, subject to the stated branch exception; its Verification of Payee register is published daily.

The checkout model affects how much control you have over the payment experience and how much technical and security work your business must manage. Neither model removes the need to understand your own responsibilities under the provider contract and applicable rules.
| Checkout model | Trade-off | Consider it if |
|---|---|---|
| Hosted checkout | The customer uses a payment page provided by the PSP. Your Europe says this can reduce the merchant’s need to handle security updates and compliance work. | You want a provider-managed payment page and less checkout infrastructure to maintain. |
| Integrated gateway or API | Gives your business more flexibility and control over the payment page, but requires IT skills and management of security updates and compliance. | You have technical capacity to build and maintain a more tailored checkout. |
Ask the PSP which security tasks remain yours, how updates are handled, and what you must do when changing your checkout. The Your Europe guide describes the hosted and integrated approaches.

Apply EU payment-acceptance and currency rules carefully
Within the EU, a merchant may choose which electronic methods to offer. But if you offer an electronic payment method in a currency you support, Your Europe says you must accept it regardless of where the customer or the customer’s payment service provider is located within the EU. For example, an online shop that accepts euro card payments cannot reject a Finnish card solely because it is used by a customer in Belgium. The rule does not mean you must offer every payment method or currency. Read the scope in Your Europe’s payment guidance.
Covered card surcharges are not allowed under the same guidance. Do not treat that statement as a rule for every payment method or every card type; check the applicable scope for your transaction.

Plan for authentication and instant payments
The Commission’s payment-services page says PSD2 includes provisions intended to make internet payments safer, strengthen consumer rights, and support innovation. Your Europe also says online businesses must be able to perform strong customer authentication (SCA). The precise treatment depends on the transaction, applicable exemptions, and your provider’s implementation, so confirm what your checkout must support with your PSP and consult current regulatory guidance. The Commission recorded political agreement on proposals revising PSD2 on 27 November 2025; that agreement alone does not mean a replacement regime has fully taken effect. See the Commission’s payment-services page.
Instant Payments Regulation obligations have phased dates and scopes. The Commission lists these milestones:
- 9 January 2025: the first phase took effect. Euro-area PSPs must receive instant euro payments where they do not already offer them, and may not charge more than for regular transfers.
- 9 October 2025: the second phase requires euro-area PSPs to enable sending instant euro payments and to verify the intended beneficiary.
- 2027: a further phase is listed for PSPs outside the euro area to allow sending and receiving instant euro payments and to verify the beneficiary.
These are the Commission’s stated dates and scopes; check the current rules and your PSP’s implementation for your own markets and services.

Compare the commercial terms before you commit
Once providers meet your coverage and checkout needs, compare their current contracts and pricing. The relevant terms are provider-specific and cannot be inferred from the payment method or a general EU guide.
- Transaction, monthly, setup, and currency-conversion fees.
- Settlement timing and the currencies in which funds reach your account.
- Refund, dispute, reserve, and chargeback terms.
- Support for your sales channel, including any in-person payment needs.
- Technical integration, account onboarding, and ongoing security responsibilities.
- Provider authorization or registration, plus scheme participation where a SEPA scheme claim matters to your use case.
Ask for the terms that apply to your legal entity, countries, currencies, and payment flows. No provider can be recommended universally without those details, and market coverage and pricing can change.
Keep VAT separate from payment processing
A PSP can collect a payment; it does not determine your VAT obligations. Online sales may trigger VAT duties depending on what you supply, whether the customer is a business or consumer, and where the customer or goods are located. The European Commission’s VAT One Stop Shop guides index includes revised explanatory notes and OSS guidelines published on 24 July 2026. It says the relevant ViDA changes enter into force on 1 January 2027. Check the Commission’s current guidance or ask a qualified tax adviser about your specific sales.
