At Evergreen High School in Evergreen, Colorado, support dogs Norene and Polenta have become part of the school day after a September 2025 shooting. Students interviewed by the Associated Press said greeting or petting the dogs lifts their spirits, and staff bring them into ordinary routines as well as stressful moments. Those accounts describe comfort students feel; they do not establish that the dogs caused academic gains or demonstrate a measured clinical effect.
Why Evergreen High School brought dogs into the school day
In September 2025, a 16-year-old student opened fire with a revolver at the school during lunch, wounding two students before shooting himself. The suspect later died. Principal Skyler Artes sheltered in the main office with students and staff and stayed until the last person had left. She later described the aftermath as “everybody was devastated, a lot of sorrow, a lot of grief, a lot of uncertainty about how to proceed.”

Canine Companions volunteers brought dogs to the family reunification site after the shooting and continued visiting the school. Artes then decided the school should have support dogs on a permanent basis. According to the Associated Press report published October 10, 2026, the California-based nonprofit provides trauma support dogs free of charge. Norene joined Evergreen in March 2026; Polenta arrived in August. The AP described them as the first dogs matched with a school following a shooting on campus.

The dogs are woven into regular school routines rather than brought in only for emergencies. They greet students in the morning, walk the hallways and visit classrooms. They can also be present during stressful times such as tests. Polenta goes to volleyball practice with lead counselor Amy Wells, who is also the team’s coach. Norene is handled by Artes; Wells handles Polenta. Both adults completed training with Canine Companions.

The dogs have also taken part in school celebrations: students crowned them homecoming prince and princess, and they wore crowns and capes at a football game. For students, that visibility makes the dogs approachable parts of school life, not just support reserved for a crisis.
How students say the dogs make them feel
Junior Fisher Helbraun said greeting the dogs is his first routine after getting off the bus: “Every morning after I get off the bus, I have to say hi to these two. It’s my first thing I do every day.” He said seeing either dog makes him smile and that he enjoys getting puppy kisses or petting them.

She also said the dogs are there during tests and other stressful or low moments. Those are individual students’ experiences, as reported by AP; they are not a controlled assessment of how much the program changes students’ well-being.

What the report says about school outcomes—and what it cannot show
Artes told AP that Evergreen had a “100% graduation rate” in a year she described as extraordinarily difficult, and that AP test scores went up. The report does not give a graduating-class size, test-score figures, a baseline, or comparison data. It therefore does not show that the dogs caused either outcome. The students’ descriptions of comfort and the principal’s account of school outcomes are different kinds of evidence and should not be treated as proof of an academic effect.

Canine Companions starts training support dogs as puppies. The AP report says they learn dozens of tasks, from basic commands such as sitting and staying to more refined responses when a student or teacher is having a difficult moment. They also learn to remain a steady presence in school settings that may trigger trauma, according to Mazzoni. The report says a dog remains at an assigned facility for eight to ten years before retiring; that is a description of the program reported at Evergreen, not a universal duration for therapy or support dogs.
