Online pornography services make money in several ways: advertising, paid access or individual content, creator and production-company partnerships, and interactive payments such as tipping performers on cam services. Which model applies—and how revenue is divided—depends on the service’s contracts and operations. Public information does not establish a reliable current global revenue total or industry-wide revenue split.
How does the internet porn business work?
It helps to separate three roles that may overlap but are not interchangeable:
- The service or platform attracts users, hosts or distributes content, sells access or advertising, and may process payments.
- The content supplier may be an independent creator, a production company, or the platform itself. Supplying content does not necessarily mean owning the service or controlling its pricing.
- The performer may create content independently, work with a production company, or appear in interactive performances. Payment arrangements vary by service and contract.
Money can therefore move from advertisers or users to a platform, then to a creator or production partner under that service’s terms. The exact route depends on how the service earns revenue and who supplies the content. A creator share is a contractual arrangement, not a standard industry-wide rate.
How does the online porn industry make money?
Ofcom’s Functionality of Online Pornography Services report, published in 2023, reviewed a defined sample of the top 100 services. Its figures below describe how many services in that sample displayed a feature; they are not estimates of revenue, audience share, profitability, or creator earnings.

| Service model or feature | How money may be earned | What Ofcom found in its sample |
|---|---|---|
| Advertising-supported or “tube” services | Free viewing can be supported by banner, pop-up, or video advertising. Some services may also use free content to direct users toward paid offerings or other services. | Advertising was present on 68 of the 100 services reviewed, including all 47 services Ofcom classified as tube services. The report noted that ads could be a primary or partial source of funding. |
| Paid content and subscriptions | A service can charge for premium access or for particular content. The categories and access arrangements vary by service. | Paid-for content appeared on 16% of the services reviewed. Ofcom’s category included premium or subscription services as well as some cam, gaming, and voyeur services. |
| Content partner programs | A service may work with creators or production companies to promote content. Payment terms and participation arrangements are platform-specific. | Ofcom identified a content partner program on 24% of the services reviewed; terms were not always publicly identifiable. |
| Interactive cam services | Users pay to engage with performers, and the service takes a share of the payments. | Ofcom observed revenue-sharing arrangements on all 14 cam services in its sample. The report described variation between services. |
These models can coexist. Ofcom also observed ads for other adult services and sex-related products on some sites. The presence of a particular feature does not show how much money it makes or how revenue is split.
What determines how much creators or companies receive?
There is no single payment arrangement implied by a platform’s business model. A service might sell advertising around content, charge users for access, or facilitate paid interactions; the share, fees, and eligibility rules depend on its own agreements. Ofcom found creator or production-company programs on some services, but could not identify terms on every service. Its findings do not establish a typical creator percentage, average income, or subscription conversion rate.

For creators and production companies, the practical questions are contractual: who owns or licenses the content, what uses are permitted, how payments are calculated, when they are paid, and what deductions or conditions apply. Public descriptions of a program may not disclose all of those terms, so a platform’s advertised model alone cannot tell a creator what they will earn.
Why public figures do not add up to a reliable industry total
The UK Independent Pornography Review discusses free sites, paywalls, premium offers, and subscriptions, while noting limited financial transparency among larger companies. Ofcom’s top-100 review is a functionality review, not a financial survey. Together, these sources describe ways services can earn money, but they do not establish a current global market valuation or a dependable industry-wide revenue breakdown.

Ownership figures also need careful dating. Canada’s Office of the Privacy Commissioner, in its investigation of Aylo, identifies MindGeek as the company now known as Aylo and records that it operated multiple adult websites. The investigation contains historical company and traffic information, which should not be treated as current market statistics or proof of present-day ownership concentration.
Consent, privacy, and moderation are part of the operating model
A service’s economics depend in part on decisions about who may upload content, how performers’ ages and identities are documented, how consent is obtained, and how privacy complaints and takedown requests are handled. These are operational responsibilities, not just reputational concerns: they affect what content a service can host and how it responds when a person depicted disputes its publication.

- Privacy Screen Filter Size: If the visible area of your display has the following dimension: Width x Height (Exclude Frame/Arrow 1 to 3 mm errors): 20 15/16" x 11 13/16" (532 mm x 299 mm), then this filter is good for you. Very Important to double check your screen's Width and Height excluding frame before ordering. It's not recommended to make your selection based solely on your screen's diagonal size
- Left and Right Privacy: Not block visibility directly behind you, regardless of distance. The privacy filter makes the screen appear dark when looking at it from an angle (left and right 30 to 180 degree), but clear when looking directly at it. To change the privacy levels, simply adjust your monitor's brightness level accordingly
- Matte and Glossy Sides: It's a reversible privacy screen filter, giving you the flexibility to choose glossy or matte finish. The matte side will have less glare, however the glossy side will have stronger privacy
- Perfect for Open Workspaces: Ensure your working space is bright and well lit. Privacy screens do not work in dimly lit areas
- Two Installation Option: Option 1 uses clear double side adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to take out the privacy screen filter easily as needed
In its Aylo investigation, Canada’s Office of the Privacy Commissioner found a complaint well-founded. The regulator concluded that relying solely on uploaders to confirm consent did not ensure valid and meaningful consent from everyone depicted. The report also describes tools and human moderation processes that the company said it used; those company descriptions are not a regulator’s guarantee that harmful or non-consensual content will always be detected. The findings concern that company and investigation, not every service in the industry.

There is no single global compliance rule in the sources cited here. Two jurisdiction-specific examples illustrate why age assurance and performer records should not be conflated.

United Kingdom: age assurance for access to pornography
Ofcom’s July 2026 report examines the first six months after child-protection duties began in July 2025, across pornography, social media, and online dating. It says, “There is no single age assurance method or process that eliminates the risk of circumvention,” and sets out the regulator’s expectation that pornography services use highly effective age assurance rather than allowing access without checks. These are early findings and current regulator expectations, not a final finding that one method works for every provider. The Digital Economy Act 2017 explanatory notes describe earlier statutory age-verification requirements; they are historical background, not a substitute for current Ofcom guidance.
United States: records for certain producers
The U.S. Department of Justice summarizes recordkeeping and labeling requirements under 18 U.S.C. §§ 2257 and 2257A for producers of visual depictions involving actual human beings in actual or simulated sexually explicit conduct. DOJ says covered producers must verify performers are at least 18 and maintain records of their names and ages. This is a U.S.-specific summary, not a description of rules worldwide or legal advice for a particular service.
Quick Recap
What a reader can—and cannot—infer from the business models
- A free site may still earn money through advertising or by directing users to paid products or services.
- A paid service does not, by itself, reveal how much a creator receives; that depends on the service’s terms.
- A feature count in Ofcom’s sample indicates that a model was present on services reviewed, not how much revenue that model generated.
- Public sources cited here do not support a current global industry revenue total, a universal creator revenue share, or a reliable comparison of platform profitability.
