The March 26, 2024, collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge disrupted vessel access to the Port of Baltimore and exposed a specific set of agricultural supply-chain risks: fertilizer imports, farm machinery, and some other agricultural goods. The evidence supports a temporary logistics disruption—not claims of widespread crop losses, food shortages, or lasting farm cost increases. The main shipping channel reopened in June 2024, and later port figures show substantial recovery.
How the collapse disrupted agricultural shipping
At about 1:30 a.m. on March 26, 2024, the container ship Dali struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The collapse blocked the port’s main shipping channel and interrupted normal vessel access. Maryland’s environmental agency later said sampling found no major impacts to the waterway. Maryland Department of the Environment: Francis Scott Key Bridge
The agricultural connection was about cargo movement and regional logistics, not dependence on Baltimore for every U.S. crop. EPA described Baltimore as the busiest U.S. port for imported farm and construction machinery and agricultural products such as fertilizers. Maryland Extension noted that Maryland corn and soybeans were generally used by the region’s livestock industry, with only a minor share of those commodities exported through Baltimore. What importers were told during the closure
On April 4, 2024, USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) said cargo operations remained suspended. Its guidance addressed agricultural shipments booked for Baltimore; it was temporary disruption guidance, not current routing advice.

- Permitted plant materials and specified animal products could enter at other North Atlantic ports for inspection or clearance, subject to applicable requirements.
- Live animal shipments regulated by Veterinary Services still had to arrive at the port listed on their permit. Importers affected by the disruption were told to contact USDA.

What the disruption could mean for farm costs
Rerouting fertilizer and machinery can complicate delivery schedules and logistics. In April 2024, University of Maryland Extension said farmers might face an additional $0.15–$0.20 per pound of nitrogen because of rerouted fertilizer logistics. That was a forward-looking estimate during the closure, not a confirmed bill paid by farmers or a verified lasting increase. University of Maryland Extension

The available evidence does not establish whether regional farmers paid that projected premium, whether any added cost continued after the channel reopened, or whether the collapse changed yields or food prices. A disruption to import routing is not by itself evidence of a change in farm output or consumer prices.
Reopening and what recovery figures show
Maryland reopened the full main shipping channel in June 2024, 78 days after the collapse. The state said more than 50,000 tons of debris had been removed. At the reopening, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said, “As of this week the channel is open, the ships are moving, the terminals are operating, and this great American port is full steam ahead.” That statement described the port’s operational reopening; it did not establish that every shipper had avoided extra costs. Later totals indicate a strong recovery in port throughput, but they cannot show whether individual agricultural importers absorbed disruption-related costs:
| Measure | Reported result | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Port cargo handled in 2024 | 45.9 million tons, reported by the Maryland Port Administration in February 2025 | Annual cargo volume recovered substantially; the figure does not isolate agricultural shipments or their costs. |
| Roll-on/roll-off farm and construction machinery in 2024 | 848,628 tons, reported by the Maryland Port Administration in February 2025 | Shows the scale of this cargo category, not whether machinery deliveries were delayed or became more expensive. |
| Cargo vessel visits in 2025 | 2,223, reported by Maryland DOT | Evidence of subsequent vessel activity, not a measure of farm-level outcomes. |
| Seagirt Marine Terminal container activity in 2025 | 1,113,309 twenty-foot equivalent units, reported by Maryland DOT | Evidence of container throughput, not proof that every agricultural shipment escaped added cost. |

What the event does—and does not—establish
The collapse temporarily disrupted Baltimore-bound vessel traffic and required agricultural importers to respond to shipment-specific routing and permit rules. The port’s role in fertilizer and equipment imports made those logistics relevant to agriculture, particularly in the region. Reopening and subsequent cargo totals document restored operations and activity; they do not measure the final costs borne by farmers.
The cited sources do not establish widespread crop losses, food shortages, a lasting nitrogen-price premium, or changes in food prices caused by the collapse. Those outcomes should not be inferred from either the temporary closure or later port recovery statistics.
