Taking a temporary job does not automatically cancel your unemployment claim. Depending on your state’s rules, your earnings and hours, and your claim’s other requirements, you may receive a reduced partial benefit for a week—or no payment for that week. Report the work as your state directs, keep certifying, and check with your state unemployment agency when the assignment changes or ends.
Can you collect unemployment while working a temporary job?
Possibly. The U.S. Department of Labor says people working part time may qualify for partial unemployment benefits, subject to state eligibility rules. A temporary assignment does not, by itself, determine whether your claim ends. The state evaluates your circumstances and the rules that apply to the benefit week.
States administer unemployment insurance and set eligibility rules, so there is no single national earnings limit or partial-benefit formula. Your payment may be reduced or stopped for a particular week depending on the state’s calculation and your earnings or hours. For current rules, use your state agency’s instructions; USAGov’s state unemployment benefits directory links to state programs. The U.S. Department of Labor also explains that eligibility requirements are state-specific in its unemployment insurance overview.
How temporary earnings affect a weekly benefit
A state may disregard some earnings when calculating a partial payment, reduce the benefit according to its formula, or find that earnings or hours make you ineligible for payment that week. The details—including any earnings disregard or hours test—vary by state. A 2014 Department of Labor notice describes state-specific earnings-disregard provisions, but it does not establish current thresholds for any particular state. Do not rely on a general dollar figure: check the current rules for your state and claim.

The relevant earnings may be tied to the week you performed the work, not the date your paycheck arrives. Follow your agency’s directions about reporting gross wages—pay before taxes and deductions—and how it wants you to handle tips, overtime, estimates, irregular pay, self-employment, or more than one job. The Department of Labor’s weekly certification guidance advises states to give claimants clear reporting instructions. It notes: “Wage earnings are often misreported in UI weekly certifications.”
How to report a temporary job
- Check your state’s certification instructions. Use the official state unemployment portal or contact the agency to find out how and when it requires work and earnings to be reported.
- Track the weeks and hours you worked. Keep your work dates, hours, gross earnings, tips, and overtime information available when you certify. Follow the agency’s rules for estimating pay when the final amount is not yet known.
- Answer each certification question accurately. Report work and wages as requested, even if you have not received the paycheck yet. Do not substitute the pay date for the week worked unless your state specifically instructs you to do so.
- Continue required certifications. Submit weekly or biweekly certifications as directed, including for weeks when your payment may be reduced to zero. Follow your state’s instructions if your work schedule or availability changes.
Do job-search and availability rules still apply?
Often, taking a temporary assignment does not automatically remove other eligibility requirements. Depending on your state and claim, you may still need to be able and available for suitable work, search for work, and keep records of your activities. Ask the state agency whether your assignment changes any requirement or exemption that applies to you.

Registering with a temporary work agency is one example of an activity that may count toward job search under some state rules; it is not a universal substitute for the activities your state requires. The Department of Labor’s work-search materials also describe activity logs as one possible state practice. Use the format and process specified by your agency.
What to do when the assignment ends or hours fall
Check your existing claim through your state unemployment portal or contact the agency promptly. The next step could depend on whether your claim is still active and on state procedures: you may need to resume certifications, reopen the claim, or take another step. Do not assume benefits restart automatically, or that there is one nationwide procedure or deadline. Continue to follow certification instructions while you confirm what the state requires.

Where to get an answer for your specific claim
The right calculation depends on your state, claim, earnings, hours, and the benefit week involved. Contact the state unemployment agency for guidance on how those facts affect your payment.
