Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStreaming services look for activity that does not reflect genuine listening, but their full detection methods and thresholds are not public. Spotify gives artists warning signs to watch for and explains some possible consequences; those signs are reasons to investigate, not proof of fraud or of an artist’s intent. If your streams or royalty reports look unusual, document your legitimate promotion and contact your distributor or label.
What counts as artificial streaming?
Spotify defines an artificial stream as one that does not reflect genuine user listening intent, including attempts to manipulate the service with automated processes such as bots or scripts. The U.S. Copyright Office identifies methods including bot farms, click farms, playlist stuffing and account hijacking.
Artificial streaming is related to, but distinct from, catalog spam. Spotify describes catalog-spam tactics such as mass uploads, duplicate releases, search-engine optimization hacks and artificially short tracks. A spammy track or suspicious upload is not, by itself, evidence that a particular artist knowingly bought streams.
How do services detect and investigate suspicious activity?
The platforms do not publish a complete detection model, thresholds or case evidence. Spotify’s public guidance identifies patterns artists can notice, but it does not establish which signals trigger a review or how a specific case is decided. YouTube says it analyzes traffic regardless of where or how it originated, but does not disclose a complete method either. Claims about particular bot signatures, listening-duration cutoffs or universal cross-platform detection methods are not established by these public materials.

What creators can see publicly
Spotify advises artists to look into an unexplained sudden spike followed by a drop, a spike in a geography where their music was not previously active, an unexpected traffic source, or a sudden short-lived increase in followers. These are warning signs, not a finding of fraud. Spotify acknowledges that an artist can be targeted with artificial streams without knowing about or requesting them.

What the public policies say
| Publicly described point | Spotify music streaming | YouTube video and ad traffic |
|---|---|---|
| Activity covered | Streams that do not reflect genuine listening intent, including automated manipulation, according to Spotify Support. | Invalid traffic that does not come from a real user or a user with genuine interest, according to YouTube’s invalid-traffic guidance. |
| Creator-visible warning signs | Unusual spikes, unfamiliar geographies or sources, and abrupt follower growth, according to Spotify’s artist guidance. | Not stated in the cited YouTube policy materials. |
| Detection description | Public thresholds, complete model and case evidence are not stated in Spotify’s public guidance. | YouTube says it analyzes traffic regardless of origin or method; further model details are not stated in its public guidance. |
| Described consequences | Spotify describes adjustments to streams, royalties, charts and recommendations, as well as possible playlist or distributor action. | YouTube says detected earnings may be offset against current or future AdSense for YouTube balances; its fake-engagement policy says artificial traffic is not counted and may lead to account strikes. |
What can happen to streams, royalties and accounts?
Spotify says it cleans public metrics daily, withholds royalties tied to confirmed artificial activity, corrects public stream counts and charts, and prevents artificial streams from positively influencing recommendations. Depending on severity, tracks may be removed from playlists. Spotify also says it provides monthly reports to labels and distributors; those partners may issue a warning, charge a penalty fee, suspend an account or remove music. For flagrant cases, Spotify says it charges labels and distributors per track.
A public dashboard may still show a spike in some circumstances. Spotify identifies the royalty report from the artist’s label or distributor as the more reliable source for understanding royalty outcomes. A visible stream count and a payable royalty amount therefore should not be treated as interchangeable evidence.

YouTube’s rules cover video/ad invalid traffic and fake engagement, not the same music-royalty accounting process described by Spotify. YouTube says invalid traffic can reduce earnings through offsets against current or future AdSense for YouTube balances. Its fake-engagement policy says artificial page traffic is not counted and can result in account strikes.
What should an artist do about a suspicious spike or distributor charge?
- Record what changed. Note the dates, stream or follower pattern, geography and traffic source shown in your Spotify data, along with any playlist or campaign involved.
- Report a suspicious playlist to Spotify. Spotify advises artists to report playlists they believe are generating artificial streams.
- Contact your label or distributor. Tell them the data looks abnormal and ask them to review the relevant royalty report and any notice or charge. Spotify says labels and distributors receive monthly reports about artificial streaming.
- Share evidence of legitimate promotion if you believe the streams were genuine. Spotify advises providing the distributor or label with information about the promotion methods used so the partner can work with Spotify to review the case.
- Avoid services promising guaranteed streams or playlist placement. Spotify warns artists against such offers; they may expose a release to artificial activity rather than genuine listeners.
The public guidance does not establish a guaranteed direct artist appeal route or a guaranteed correction timeline. Keep the discussion with your distributor or label factual and preserve relevant campaign records.
What do Spotify’s fraud figures tell artists?
Spotify reported that its music payouts rose from $1 billion in 2014 to $10 billion in 2024. It also said it removed more than 75 million spammy tracks in the 12 months before its 2025 announcement. Those are Spotify-reported figures; the track-removal number is not an independently audited, industry-wide measure and does not quantify confirmed artificial streams or the share of any artist’s royalties affected.

What is the Copyright Office doing about streaming fraud?
On October 7, 2026, the U.S. Copyright Office published a notice of inquiry seeking information about fraud prevalence across platforms, effects on the industry, current deterrence efforts and possible solutions. The page sets November 23, 2026, for initial comments and December 21, 2026, for reply comments. These are deadlines for a fact-gathering inquiry, not findings or adopted rules.
