Steve Gibson’s fortune is most closely associated with Bulkhaul, the bulk-transport business he founded. A £640 million figure attributed to him is a dated estimate from the May 2024 Sunday Times Rich List, reported by Boro News—not an audited or current valuation of his personal wealth.
How did Steve Gibson make his money?
Bulkhaul is the clearest documented source of Gibson’s wealth. BBC Sport described him as having made his money transporting bulk gases, liquids and powders through Bulkhaul Limited. The company operates in bulk transport; the available reporting does not provide a breakdown of its revenue, profits or Gibson’s personal proceeds.
Boro News reported in June 2024 that Gibson founded Bulkhaul in 1981 after borrowing £1,000 from his father. That loan is a reported origin detail, not an independently verified figure in the available records. The BBC’s earlier account identifies the business as the source of his money but does not give a founding-loan amount. BBC Sport’s 2012 profile and Boro News’ 2024 report provide those respective accounts.
What does the £640 million figure represent?
Boro News reported that the Sunday Times Rich List estimated Gibson’s net worth at £640 million in May 2024. This is a secondary report of a Rich List estimate; the original entry is not available in the sources cited here. No cited source supplies an audited calculation, itemized assets and liabilities, or a current valuation of Gibson’s personal wealth. Treat £640 million as a dated estimate, not a verified figure for what he is worth today.

What do company records show about Bulkhaul and Middlesbrough?
Companies House records Gibson as having significant influence or control over Bulkhaul, and Gibson O’Neill Company Limited as owning 75% or more of the company. It also records Gibson O’Neill as owning 75% or more of Middlesbrough Football & Athletic Company Holdings Limited, with Gibson listed as having significant influence or control. These records establish reported corporate relationships; ownership and control records are not personal net-worth calculations. Companies House cautions that it does not check the accuracy of information filed by companies.
The filings also have limits for assessing wealth: Middlesbrough Football & Athletic Company (1986) Limited’s filing history shows accounts made up to 30 June 2025 were filed on 26 February 2026, and accounts made up to 30 June 2024 were filed on 9 January 2025. The filing-history page does not provide consolidated group net worth or Gibson’s personal balance sheet.

How is Gibson’s wealth connected to Middlesbrough FC?
Gibson has been involved with Middlesbrough since 1986, according to BBC Sport. Its 2012 report said he then owned 90% of the club and had become chairman in 1995. Those are historical details, not a statement of his current ownership stake or role. Current Companies House records instead identify Gibson O’Neill’s 75%-or-more ownership of the club holding company and Gibson’s significant influence or control.
The club’s finances illustrate why club support should not be confused with personal wealth. BBC Sport reported that the parent company provided about £1 million per month during the period covered by Middlesbrough’s accounts to 30 June 2011. That is a historical figure for company support, not Gibson’s current income, an estimate of his assets, or evidence that the same level of support continues. BBC Sport’s report on the club’s finances describes that period.
