That is a claim about Stereogum, not a verified measure of the publishing industry as a whole.
What changed at Stereogum?
From MP3 discovery to streaming-era coverage
Stereogum says it was founded in 2002 as an independent music publication. Its early era coincided with blogs helping listeners discover music through downloadable MP3s. The title-matching profile, reproduced by GNN Web Desk from The Verge on November 16, 2025, describes streaming as changing that discovery landscape: when music is readily available through streaming services, a publication’s role is less about supplying a download and more about explaining, selecting and contextualizing what is worth hearing. The profile is a secondary reproduction; its interview framing should be understood as reported context rather than an independently verified account of the company’s finances.
Stereogum’s official About Us page identifies Scott Lapatine as Founder/Editor-in-Chief and describes the site as independently owned and operated. The company’s November 2025 relaunch announcement says the redesign is intended for a music and publishing environment shaped by streaming and AI.
Editorial curation remains the distinction it is selling
Streaming platforms make large catalogs easy to access, but access is not the same as editorial judgment. Stereogum’s business case for human music writing is that reporting, criticism and curation provide a point of view that a platform’s recommendations do not necessarily offer. Lapatine framed that belief directly in the relaunch announcement: “We think there’s like a future for music writing done by humans,” he wrote. That is the founder’s view of the publication’s purpose, not a claim that algorithmic discovery has disappeared.

Why is Stereogum asking readers to pay?
Advertising still matters, but the publisher says it is not enough on its own
In his November 10, 2025 announcement, Lapatine said Stereogum had diversified revenue since he regained control of the company in 2020. He named a newsletter, merchandise, affiliate links, live-event partnerships and paid membership. He also said advertising remained the vast majority of revenue at the time, even as the company sought more reader support.
Lapatine attributed a 70% decline in Stereogum’s ad revenue to Google’s pivot to AI search: “Google’s pivot to AI search has cut our ad revenue by 70%.” This is a company-specific figure reported by the founder. The announcement does not establish it as an independently audited figure or as a measure of the wider online publishing market.

The underlying financial tension is straightforward: if fewer people reach a publication through search, or if those visits generate less advertising value, advertising alone may become less dependable for funding writers. Membership gives readers a direct way to contribute, though it does not by itself guarantee that subscription income will replace lost advertising.
What the membership announcement said at the time
Stereogum’s November 10, 2025 announcement described free access with registration, followed eventually by prompts to subscribe. It listed monthly and annual membership, a $99-per-month All Access tier, and gift subscriptions. These are dated terms from that announcement, not confirmation of current prices, access rules or availability; check Stereogum’s membership page for present terms before signing up.

The same announcement said paying members were important to keeping the operation running and funding writers and other contributors. It reported that nearly 200 new voices had joined since the independent relaunch and that freelancers were paid within one week of submitting invoices. Those are publisher-reported accomplishments, not independently audited figures.
How Stereogum says it is responding to AI
Its stated policy is to keep generative AI out of its work
In November 2025, Stereogum stated that it does not use generative AI and that its writers do not use it for reporting or writing. Lapatine’s quoted formulation was: “Stereogum does not use generative AI.” This describes the publisher’s stated policy at that time; it should not be read as an independently verified audit of every process or as a guarantee that the policy will never change.

The policy connects the editorial promise to the membership pitch. If the publication wants readers to value human reporting and criticism, it needs a way to pay the people producing that work. Reader contributions are one part of the funding mix, alongside advertising and the other initiatives Lapatine named.
Search referrals and direct readership are different dependencies
Search and social platforms can bring new readers, but a publication has limited control over how those platforms distribute links or monetize results. Direct readership—people who return to the site, subscribe to its newsletter or become members—can create a closer relationship between the publication and its audience. It does not eliminate reliance on advertising: Lapatine said ads still made up most revenue in November 2025.

He also said Stereogum had set a new traffic record each year since 2020 and called it the most popular standalone music website in America according to Comscore. The announcement supplied no underlying Comscore report, so those should be treated as Lapatine’s claims rather than independently established rankings.

Revenue diversification does not mean advertising has been replaced
The newsletter, merchandise, affiliate links, live-event partnerships and memberships are the revenue streams Lapatine named. The announcement did not provide a breakdown of how much each contributes, and it does not establish the availability or terms of any specific affiliate offer. Readers interested in supporting the publication can look to its membership or gift-subscription options, checking current terms directly with Stereogum.
A streaming pilot was in development, not guaranteed
Lapatine said Stereogum had licensed its intellectual property for a streaming pilot in development. He cautioned that the project had not necessarily been picked up. It is therefore best understood as a potential extension of the brand, not a confirmed new business line or a completed series.
What Stereogum’s approach means for readers
Stereogum is trying to preserve a human-edited music publication while broadening how it earns money. The available facts show a business in transition, not one that has already solved the economics of AI-driven search: advertising remained dominant in the publisher’s November 2025 account, and the 70% decline was Lapatine’s company-specific report. Membership is the direct-support route the publisher says helps fund its work; whether its current offer suits a reader depends on today’s pricing and access terms.
