Stephanie Matto said she earned more than $200,000 from selling fart jars, but that total was her claim—not an independently verified profit figure. In a January 2022 Rolling Stone interview republished by The Beat Music, she described how follower requests became a novelty business, how she prepared and priced the jars, and what she estimated one shipment brought in after costs.
How did the fart-jar business start?
Matto told Rolling Stone that followers had asked her for years to sell her farts. She initially took the requests as jokes. Later, while looking for new ways to earn through her online platform, she decided to try selling jars—and found that people would buy them.
The interview describes the product’s appeal as a mix of novelty, fetish interest, personalization, and a purchase associated with a public figure. Matto said she included a handwritten letter and a photo and put effort into packaging each order. Those were her explanations of the business, not findings from a survey of customers.
How did she say she prepared each jar?
Matto said she did not fart directly into a jar. Instead, she placed scentless woven fabric flower petals against her body, farted on the petals, then put them in jars. She told the interviewer she had ordered the petals in bulk from Amazon. She said she caulked and taped the jars and packed them in bubble wrap.

This is Matto’s description of her method. The interview does not independently establish that every customer received a product prepared this way, how long any scent lasted, or whether the contents were tested for safety.
What did Matto claim she earned?
Matto’s headline-making figure was more than $200,000 in total earnings from the business. The interview provides no audited accounts or transaction records, so the figure should be understood as her claim, not verified revenue or profit.

She gave a more specific estimate for one shipment of 97 jars: about $50,000 gross, and roughly $44,000–$45,000 after shipping, handling, and other costs. That is her estimate for that shipment only; it does not establish a typical margin for the business.

How did she set the price?
Matto said the regular price was $1,000 per jar. She connected that price to demand, her television profile, the time and costs involved, and buyers’ interest in novelty or financial domination. She also described offering a 50% holiday discount and discounts on some international bulk orders.

Her explanation was that customers were paying for more than the scent. As she put it, “I think there’s a lot of different elements in buying a fart jar. It’s not just the scent.” The interview does not provide order-level pricing or enough records to calculate how discounts affected total earnings.
What happened after her emergency-room visit?
Matto said she went to an emergency room late in December after experiencing tightness around her heart and difficulty taking a full breath. In her account, tests including an EKG and blood work came back well, and clinicians said the symptoms sounded like severe gas pain. She said she had been eating a high-protein diet for the business and was advised to take a gas suppressant and avoid foods she had been eating.

The January 2022 interview reported that Matto had reduced physical jar sales after the ER visit and was promoting a collection of 5,000 digitally drawn fart-jar NFTs. She said 100 of the NFTs could be redeemed for a physical jar. Those details describe the project at the time of the interview, not its current availability, activity, redemption terms, or value.
