How Stan Kroenke Built His Multi-Billion-Dollar Sports Empire

Stan Kroenke’s sports empire grew from retail and commercial real estate into a portfolio of teams, media, venues, and major development projects.

Stan Kroenke built his sports empire on a foundation in retail and commercial real estate, then assembled controlling interests in teams across several leagues. He also invested in the venues, media, and surrounding development that connect those teams. That history helps explain the scale of his business, but it does not establish a precise figure for his personal fortune or prove that any one property project financed a particular team purchase.

How did Stan Kroenke make his money before sports?

Kroenke’s documented business background began in real estate. Bloomberg reports that he partnered with developer Raul Walters in 1979 and that the two developed more than 20 retail malls across the Midwest, many of them with Walmart stores. Bloomberg dates the founding of Kroenke’s own real-estate development company to 1985.

The Colorado Avalanche’s NHL executive profile describes Kroenke as chairman and owner of The Kroenke Group, a private real-estate investment and development company with properties in the United States and Canada. This sequence supports a clear point: property development was part of his business experience before his major sports acquisitions. The available accounts do not trace a specific mall or development directly to the funding of a particular team purchase.

What teams did Kroenke acquire, and when?

His sports holdings grew over time and across leagues. The dates below distinguish early stakes from later full ownership where the sources provide that detail; they should not be read as a list of simultaneous, outright purchases.

Year Team or league What the date represents
1994 Los Angeles Rams Bloomberg dates Kroenke’s acquisition of the Rams to 1994. It separately dates his full ownership of the St. Louis Rams to 2010.
2000 Colorado Avalanche and Denver Nuggets Bloomberg dates the acquisitions to 2000.
2002 Colorado Mammoth Bloomberg dates the acquisition to 2002.
2004 Colorado Rapids Bloomberg dates the acquisition to 2004.
2007 Arsenal Arsenal’s board history says Kroenke first became a shareholder in 2007.
2011 Arsenal Bloomberg dates Kroenke’s majority stake to 2011.
2018 Arsenal Arsenal’s board history says Kroenke completed full ownership in 2018.

The Arsenal milestones show why “bought the club in 2011” is an incomplete account: he had become a shareholder earlier, later held a majority stake, and completed full ownership in 2018. The Rams timeline also distinguishes an acquisition from later full ownership.

How did teams, media, and venues fit together?

Kroenke Sports & Entertainment (KSE) combines teams with other sports-related businesses. Its profile lists the Nuggets, Avalanche, Rapids, Mammoth, Rams, and Arsenal, and describes Altitude Sports & Entertainment, launched in 2004, as a regional broadcaster for KSE teams. The profile also identifies KSE-operated arenas and event venues. These assets broaden the business beyond team ownership, although the available sources do not give an audited breakdown of how much each line contributes to Kroenke’s wealth.

The Rams, Los Angeles, and Hollywood Park

The Rams’ official profile says Kroenke privately financed the Los Angeles stadium project and that NFL owners ratified the team’s return proposal on January 12, 2016. It presents SoFi Stadium as the central venue in the 298-acre Hollywood Park development. That combination illustrates how a team acquisition can be tied to a larger property and event project, rather than to the franchise alone.

The Rams’ profile describes SoFi Stadium as a 3.1-million-square-foot stadium expandable to 100,000 seats, with a listed capacity of 70,240. It also gives planned or listed Hollywood Park components: a 6,000-seat theater, 300 hotel rooms, 2,500 residences, and more than 1.5 million square feet of retail, office, conference, and meeting space. These are figures from the team’s description of the project, not an independent audit; they do not establish that every component is complete.

What do the championships say about the portfolio?

The Avalanche won the Stanley Cup in 2022, and the Nuggets won the NBA championship in 2023, according to the NHL executive profile. Those titles are notable sporting milestones for teams in the portfolio. They do not, by themselves, establish how much either team’s value changed or what portion of Kroenke’s fortune came from the wins.

How large is Kroenke’s real-estate portfolio—and what is his fortune?

Bloomberg’s profile reports more than 300 properties held through the Kroenke Group and THF Realty. The figure is Bloomberg’s reported count, not an independently audited inventory. The same profile estimates Kroenke’s ranch holdings at about 2.5 million acres in the United States and Canada. Axios reported a different total—2.7 million acres—on January 16, 2026, after a reported purchase of 937,000 acres in New Mexico. Those estimates come from different reporting and should not be treated as a single reconciled acreage figure.

Kroenke’s personal fortune is not the same thing as the value of the sports portfolio. Forbes broadly describes his source of wealth as real estate and sports, while Bloomberg discusses selected valuation inputs, including team reports and land data. The available sources do not provide one reconciled, audited figure for his personal fortune or a full accounting of how much came from each business. A precise personal-wealth total would therefore imply more certainty than these accounts support.

Is the Los Angeles Angels purchase complete?

No. Major League Baseball reported on September 2, 2026, that Kroenke had reached an agreement to acquire a controlling interest in the Los Angeles Angels from the Moreno family. MLB said the deal was expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, subject to league approval. Its September 3 FAQ said the transaction must pass league review and receive the required owner vote. As of those September reports, it remained pending—not completed ownership.

The Angels’ stadium situation is also unresolved. MLB says the Angel Stadium lease runs through December 31, 2032, with two extensions that could keep the club there through 2038. The city of Anaheim owns the ballpark and the land, according to MLB’s FAQ. Those facts do not establish whether the team will stay, move, buy the property, or pursue redevelopment.
