How Social Security Survivor Benefits Work for Widows

A widow may qualify for Social Security survivor benefits at 60, or 50 if disabled. Eligibility, claiming age, work, remarriage and the deceased worker’s record determine the payment.

A widow may qualify for monthly Social Security survivor benefits starting at age 60, or at 50 if disabled, but eligibility and the amount depend on the marriage, the deceased worker’s record, the survivor’s age, and other circumstances. Claiming early can reduce the monthly payment. If you also qualify on your own record, Social Security generally pays the higher eligible amount—not both full benefits.

What survivor benefits are—and who may qualify

Social Security survivor benefits are monthly payments based on a deceased worker’s earnings record. A widow or widower may generally qualify at age 60, or at ages 50 through 59 if disabled. The rules also cover some surviving divorced spouses and other family members, so the worker’s spouse is not necessarily the only person who can receive a benefit on that record.

Eligibility is conditional. A surviving spouse commonly must have been married to the worker for at least nine months. There are exceptions, including some cases involving a child of the deceased worker, and separate rules can apply when a survivor is caring for a child. Legal relationships that were not formally marriages may also count in some circumstances under Social Security rules.

A surviving divorced spouse may qualify if the marriage lasted at least 10 years. Remarriage can affect eligibility; the timing and circumstances matter. A person should not assume that a prior divorce or a later marriage automatically rules out a claim.

Other family members on the worker’s record

Depending on the circumstances, a deceased worker’s children or dependent parents may also qualify:

  • An unmarried child age 17 or younger.
  • An unmarried child age 18 or 19 who attends kindergarten through grade 12 full time.
  • A child of any age whose disability began by age 21.
  • Certain stepchildren, adopted children, grandchildren, and stepgrandchildren.
  • A dependent parent age 62 or older whom the deceased worker supported.

Family members’ eligibility can change which benefits are payable. For example, Social Security publishes an average for a widowed mother and two children separately from its average for an aged widow or widower alone. Those categories are not interchangeable with an individual estimate.

How much a widow may receive

The payment is calculated from the deceased worker’s record and the survivor’s eligibility and age. Social Security says survivor benefits range from 71.5% to 100% of the spouse’s benefit, depending on the survivor’s age when applying. That range is a general program description, not a personal estimate or a promise that everyone will receive the same percentage at a particular age.

The 100% figure is associated with the survivor reaching survivor full retirement age; it should not be read as the usual amount available at age 60. Survivor full retirement age depends on birth year, and claiming before that age can reduce the monthly amount. The applicable calculation also depends on the deceased worker’s record and other program limits.

The worker’s own claiming history can matter. Delayed retirement credits earned by the worker may be reflected in the survivor amount. If the worker claimed retirement benefits early, Social Security describes limitations on survivor amounts for certain survivors who first become entitled at age 62 or later. Because the calculation combines details from two people’s records and dates of birth, a broad percentage rule cannot reliably answer “How much will I get?”

Average benefits are context, not a forecast

Social Security estimated the following average monthly benefits payable in January 2026, after the stated cost-of-living adjustment:

Benefit category Estimated average monthly benefit
Aged widow(er) alone $1,919
Widowed mother and two children $3,898

These are agency estimates for groups of beneficiaries, not amounts a particular widow or family should expect. A person’s payment depends on the deceased worker’s covered earnings record, the survivor’s age, and the applicable entitlement category. Social Security must use the individual records to determine the amount.

When to claim: early payment versus waiting

The main timing trade-off is between receiving a potentially reduced payment sooner and waiting until survivor full retirement age for the unreduced survivor percentage, subject to the individual calculation. The right comparison is not simply “claim at 60” versus “wait.” It should include the benefit available at each relevant age, the survivor’s own retirement or disability benefit, work income, and any benefits payable to children.

  1. Identify the earliest age that may apply. For a widow or widower, the general age threshold is 60, or 50 if disabled. Marriage duration, remarriage, and child-in-care circumstances can change the eligibility analysis.
  2. Find the survivor full retirement age for your birth year. It varies by birth year. Do not assume it matches a general retirement-age chart or another person’s eligibility date.
  3. Ask Social Security for the amount at different claiming ages. The percentage range does not reveal your dollar benefit. Request a comparison based on the worker’s record and your birth date.
  4. Compare survivor and own-record options. If you have a retirement or disability benefit on your own record, ask how each possible claiming sequence affects the amount payable now and later.
  5. Include work and family circumstances. Earnings before full retirement age may affect checks, while children or other eligible relatives may have separate claims on the worker’s record.

This comparison matters particularly when the deceased worker claimed benefits early or delayed them. Those choices can affect survivor calculations, and the effect is not captured by an average benefit or a single percentage. Ask Social Security to evaluate the records before choosing a start date.

Can you receive your own Social Security and a survivor benefit?

You generally do not receive both your own full retirement benefit and the deceased worker’s full survivor benefit at the same time. If you qualify on both records, Social Security says it pays the higher eligible amount. The exact outcome can depend on when you claim, so it is worth asking the agency to compare the options rather than assuming your own benefit replaces the survivor benefit or that the two are added together.

When speaking with Social Security, ask for a comparison of the survivor benefit and your own retirement or disability benefit, including the amounts available at different ages. The useful question is which option is payable when and how the timing affects what you could receive—not merely which record has the larger headline estimate.

Working while receiving survivor benefits

You can work while receiving survivor benefits, but the earnings test may cause Social Security to withhold some benefits before you reach full retirement age. For 2026, the agency’s annual limits and withholding rules are:

Situation in 2026 Earnings limit Withholding rule above the limit
Below full retirement age for the entire year $24,480 $1 in benefits for every $2 above the limit
Reaching full retirement age during the year $65,160 for earnings before the full-retirement-age month $1 in benefits for every $3 above the limit

Beginning with the month you reach full retirement age, there is no earnings limit under this test. The limits are specific to 2026 and may change in later years. For the earnings test, Social Security counts wages and net earnings from self-employment—not pensions or investment income.

If you expect earnings near or above the applicable limit, ask Social Security how the test applies to your situation and how to report changes. A withheld benefit is not the same thing as an eligibility ruling: the test concerns payments in the relevant period, while the underlying survivor claim depends on the program’s separate eligibility rules.

How remarriage affects eligibility

For a claim on a former spouse’s record, remarriage before age 60 generally can prevent entitlement; in a disability case, the relevant threshold is generally age 50. Exceptions may apply, including when the later marriage ends. The rule is not simply that any remarriage permanently cancels a survivor claim.

Remarriage after age 60—or after age 50 in a disability situation—generally does not prevent benefits based on a former spouse’s work record. At age 62 or older, a person may also qualify on a new spouse’s record if that amount is higher. These rules can interact with age, disability, marriage history, and which record provides the larger eligible payment. Tell Social Security about each marriage and its dates so the agency can assess the applicable record.

How to apply and what to do after a death

Social Security does not accept applications for monthly survivor benefits online. Call 1-800-772-1213 or contact a local Social Security office to start the claim. A funeral home usually reports the death to the agency, but the family can confirm that the notification was made. A death report is not the same as an application for survivor benefits.

  1. Contact Social Security. Call 1-800-772-1213 or reach a local office to discuss a monthly survivor claim. The application must be handled directly with the agency, not through an online survivor-benefit application.
  2. Explain the circumstances that may affect eligibility. Be ready to discuss the worker’s death, your relationship and marriage history, your age, any disability, work, and whether children or dependent parents may qualify.
  3. Ask about both monthly benefits and the lump-sum death payment. An eligible spouse or child may apply for the $255 one-time payment. It is not automatic: a qualifying claimant must file within two years of the worker’s death.
  4. Confirm what else the agency needs. Ask the office which records or information are required for your case and how it will compare benefits across the worker’s record and your own.
  5. Report relevant changes after approval. Recipients must report changes in work, income, and personal information to Social Security.

The $255 payment is separate from monthly survivor benefits. The two-year deadline applies to the lump-sum claim; do not assume that a funeral home’s death notification applies for you or that it substitutes for contacting Social Security about benefits.

Questions to settle before choosing a claim

Because the payment turns on individual records, a focused conversation with Social Security is more useful than relying on a population average. Prepare to ask:

  • What survivor benefit could I receive at each age that applies to me, including survivor full retirement age?
  • How does the deceased worker’s early or delayed retirement affect the amount on this record?
  • If I qualify on my own record, how do the amounts and claiming dates compare?
  • Could my wages or self-employment earnings affect payments under the 2026 earnings test?
  • Do my marriage history, a later marriage, disability, or care of a child affect eligibility?
  • Could children or dependent parents qualify separately on the deceased worker’s record?
  • Am I eligible to apply for the $255 lump-sum death payment, and what is my filing deadline?

Bring the facts needed to answer those questions, especially dates of birth, marriage and remarriage dates, the worker’s death, and expected earnings. The agency’s calculation—not an average or an online rule of thumb—is what can resolve an individual case.
