Re:

How Social Security Survivor Benefits Are Calculated for a Spouse and Children

Social Security survivor benefits start with the deceased worker’s earnings record. The amount then depends on each survivor’s eligibility, a spouse’s age and claim timing, and any family-maximum reduction.

Social Security survivor benefits are calculated from the deceased worker’s earnings record, then adjusted for each survivor’s benefit category and, when applicable, the surviving spouse’s age when benefits begin. Eligible children generally qualify for 75% of the worker’s basic benefit amount. A qualifying spouse caring for the worker’s child under 16 may generally receive 75%; a spouse claiming at survivor full retirement age generally receives 100%, while an earlier claim is reduced. A family maximum can lower payments when the total on one worker’s record exceeds the applicable limit. The exact amount depends on the worker’s record and the circumstances of each claimant.

What amount does Social Security use as the starting point?

The Social Security Administration (SSA) bases survivor benefits on the earnings of the person who died. The starting figure is tied to the worker’s covered earnings and basic benefit amount, called the primary insurance amount (PIA). It is not automatically the check a particular survivor will receive: age adjustments, benefit category, the family maximum, and any benefit payable on the survivor’s own record can change the final payment.

SSA calculates the worker’s basic benefit from covered earnings over an averaging period. For people first eligible for benefits after 1978, past earnings are wage-indexed as part of that calculation. The result reflects the worker’s earnings history and eligibility circumstances. Someone looking only at a survivor’s age or the number of children cannot calculate an exact award without this underlying record.

It helps to keep three figures distinct:

  • The worker’s PIA: the basic amount tied to the deceased worker’s record.
  • A survivor’s category amount: the percentage or age-adjusted amount SSA applies for that spouse or child.
  • The amount actually paid: the survivor’s payable amount after applicable reductions, the family maximum, and coordination with other Social Security benefits.

What percentage can a spouse or child receive?

SSA’s current survivor guidance describes children’s benefits as generally 75% of the parent’s benefit. A qualifying spouse caring for the deceased worker’s child under age 16 may also generally receive 75%. For an eligible spouse claiming at survivor full retirement age, the typical amount is generally 100% of the worker’s basic benefit amount. A spouse who starts earlier generally receives a reduced amount; SSA describes the age-based range as starting at 71.5% and rising with age toward 100% at survivor full retirement age.

Survivor category General amount before any family-maximum reduction Important qualification
Eligible child Generally 75% of the deceased parent’s benefit The family maximum may reduce what is paid.
Eligible spouse caring for the worker’s child under 16 Generally 75% Eligibility depends on the relationship and child-care circumstances.
Eligible spouse claiming before survivor full retirement age Starts at 71.5% at the earliest eligible age and increases with age The actual percentage depends on when the spouse claims.
Eligible spouse claiming at survivor full retirement age Generally 100% This is a general description for typical claims, not an individualized award.

These percentages describe how a benefit is generally determined, not a promise that the same percentage will appear as a monthly payment. In particular, the family maximum can lower benefits, and individual eligibility facts can affect the result. SSA’s current survivor guidance also gives illustrative examples for spouses claiming at ages 61, 63, and 65; those examples show how age affects the calculation, but they are not personal estimates.

A simple percentage example

Suppose, only for illustration, that a worker’s basic benefit amount were $2,000 per month. A 75% category amount would be $1,500, while 71.5% would be $1,430 and 100% would be $2,000. These are straightforward percentage calculations, not predictions of what SSA would pay a particular family. The actual worker’s PIA may be different, a spouse’s rate depends on claim timing, and the family maximum may reduce the amount payable.

How the family maximum can change the result

The family maximum is a cap on the combined monthly benefits payable on one worker’s earnings record. If the total benefits for eligible family members would exceed the applicable maximum, SSA may reduce dependent and survivor benefits. It is therefore possible for each person’s category calculation to be correct while the family’s total payments are lower than the sum of those individual amounts.

Not every family reaches the maximum. Whether it applies depends on the worker’s record, the benefits payable to the family, and the formula in effect for the relevant year. A surviving divorced spouse’s benefit is not reduced under the family-maximum provision.

For a worker who dies in 2026 before reaching age 62, SSA’s 2026 family-maximum formula uses bend points of $1,643, $2,371, and $3,093. These are thresholds used in the formula, not a guaranteed family-benefit amount. SSA applies the year-specific formula to portions of the worker’s PIA and, when needed, rounds the result down to the next lower 10 cents. The exact cap cannot be found by multiplying one person’s displayed benefit by a generic percentage.

SSA’s 2026 survivor publication describes the family maximum as varying between 150% and 180% of the deceased worker’s benefit amount. That range is a broad description, not a substitute for the applicable year’s formula and worker-specific calculation. The 2026 bend points above apply to the stated worker-age condition; they should not be treated as permanent thresholds or used for a different year without checking the formula for that year.

Who may qualify as a spouse or child?

Spouses and surviving divorced spouses

A surviving spouse may generally qualify at age 60 or older, or at ages 50–59 if disabled, subject to marriage and remarriage conditions. A spouse caring for the deceased worker’s child may qualify under separate rules, including circumstances where the general age and marriage-duration rule does not apply. The caregiving category is distinct from an age-based claim, so it is important to establish which rule fits the case.

A surviving divorced spouse may also qualify under separate requirements. For age-based claims, a general rule is that the marriage lasted at least 10 years. Eligibility depends on the claimant’s circumstances and the worker’s record; being a former spouse alone does not establish entitlement.

Children

A child may generally qualify if unmarried and under age 18; unmarried, age 18 or 19, and attending school full time in kindergarten through grade 12; or at any age if a disability began before age 22. Under specific circumstances, eligible family members can also include stepchildren, adopted children, grandchildren, and stepgrandchildren. The relationship, age, school status, disability onset, and other case facts matter.

These are general eligibility rules, not a complete determination for every family. A child’s eligibility and a spouse’s qualifying status should be confirmed with SSA, especially when the family relationship or circumstances are not straightforward.

How to work out what your family may receive

An estimate requires information about both the deceased worker and every potential claimant. Gather the facts before trying to total the family’s benefits; one missing child’s eligibility or one spouse’s claim age can change the analysis.

  1. Identify the worker’s record. Locate the deceased family member’s Social Security number or other identifying information. SSA says it can provide a benefit estimate, and asks for this identifying information when contacted.
  2. Establish the worker’s basic benefit amount. The calculation depends on the earnings record and the worker’s circumstances. A family member’s percentage alone cannot supply the missing PIA.
  3. List each possible claimant and their eligibility facts. For a spouse, note age, marriage history, remarriage circumstances, disability if relevant, and whether the person is caring for the worker’s child under 16. For each child, note age, marital status, school attendance if age 18 or 19, disability onset if relevant, and relationship to the worker.
  4. Determine the spouse’s claim timing. For an age-based spouse claim, the amount generally rises from the earliest eligible age toward 100% at survivor full retirement age. The survivor’s birth date and intended start date are needed to determine the applicable amount.
  5. Ask SSA to apply the family maximum. The cap is based on the applicable year’s rules and the worker’s record. Do not assume it applies, or assume that every individual category amount will be paid in full.
  6. Compare any benefit on the survivor’s own record. A survivor does not generally add a full survivor benefit to a full retirement benefit. SSA pays the higher applicable amount, and switching benefits later may be possible.
  7. Account for work earnings when relevant. Earnings can affect payments for a person below full retirement age. Include expected work and earnings in a discussion with SSA rather than treating the initial benefit amount as the final payment in all circumstances.

How survivor benefits interact with a survivor’s own benefits

A person entitled on both their own record and a deceased family member’s record should not assume the two full monthly amounts are stacked together. SSA pays the higher applicable amount. Depending on the person’s circumstances, it may be possible to receive one benefit first and switch to the other later. The order and timing depend on the person’s record, age, and benefit history; there is no single best sequence for every survivor.

Before making a claim decision, compare the survivor’s age and survivor full retirement age, whether the person is caring for an eligible child, the deceased worker’s record, the number and eligibility of children, the family maximum, any benefit on the survivor’s own or another record, and work earnings if the survivor is below full retirement age. Without dates of birth, earnings information, and benefit history, a precise recommendation about when to claim is not established.

Why an online percentage is not an exact estimate

The headline percentages are useful for understanding the structure of the program, but they leave several consequential inputs unresolved. A general 75% figure does not show whether multiple benefits will be reduced by the family maximum. A 100% spouse figure does not tell a reader whether they meet the qualifying rules or have reached survivor full retirement age. An age-based percentage cannot be selected accurately without the spouse’s birth date and start date. Nor can a household estimate be made without the worker’s basic amount and the details of other eligible family members.

For these reasons, use percentage examples to understand the calculation, not to budget as if they were an award notice. SSA’s agency publication, Survivors Benefits (Publication No. 05-10084), summarizes the program, and SSA can provide a record-specific estimate when given the worker’s identifying information and the survivor’s details. Current formula thresholds and other year-specific figures should be checked against SSA’s guidance for the year involved.

Do children always receive 75% of the deceased parent’s benefit?

75% is the general child benefit rate, not a guaranteed payment. The child must meet SSA’s eligibility rules, and the family maximum can reduce benefits when combined payments on the worker’s record exceed the applicable cap.

What is the earliest age a surviving spouse can claim?

A surviving spouse may generally qualify at age 60, or at ages 50–59 if disabled, subject to marriage and remarriage conditions. A spouse caring for the deceased worker’s child may qualify under separate rules. Eligibility should be checked with SSA for the specific circumstances.

Can I add my survivor benefit to my own Social Security retirement benefit?

Generally, SSA does not pay two full benefits stacked together; it pays the higher applicable amount. Depending on the person’s circumstances, it may be possible to receive one benefit first and switch to the other later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What information is needed for an exact survivor benefit estimate?

An estimate requires the worker’s earnings record or identifying information, the survivor’s birth date and claim timing, each child’s age and eligibility facts, and information needed to apply the family maximum. Work earnings can also matter when a claimant is below full retirement age.

The Bottom Line

Survivor benefits begin with the deceased worker’s PIA, but the final amount depends on each claimant’s eligibility, a spouse’s age and claim timing, and any family-maximum reduction. Treat percentages as general rules, not a household estimate; ask SSA to calculate the case using the worker’s record and each survivor’s details.
