Company social media can expose an organization to more than a hacked account. Unauthorized access can let someone impersonate the business or publish content, while an employee’s post or an inadvertent disclosure can damage trust. Companies can reduce these risks with clear rules, tightly managed access, strong authentication, monitoring, training, and a rehearsed response plan—but no control can guarantee that an incident will not happen.
How social media can put a company at risk
Social accounts are public-facing business assets. A compromise may give an attacker a channel that customers and other stakeholders already trust. Risk also comes from legitimate users: a post can reveal sensitive information, or employee conduct can become public and harm the organization’s reputation. The FCC-hosted Cybersecurity Planning Guide identifies impersonation and sensitive or inappropriate employee actions becoming public as risks for small businesses.
- Unauthorized access: Stolen or reused credentials, too many administrators, a compromised recovery email, or an over-permissioned connected app can put an account under someone else’s control.
- Impersonation and fraud: A fake account or unauthorized post can mislead customers, partners, or employees about what the company is saying or asking them to do.
- Accidental disclosure: A post may expose information the company intended to keep private, including details about its operations or activities.
- Employee conduct: An employee’s public actions can reflect on the company, even when the person is not posting from an official account.
- Vendor or integration exposure: A scheduling tool or other service connected to company accounts creates another access path to review and manage.
- Delayed response: Without clear ownership and a response plan, staff may not know who can revoke access, preserve records, investigate, or communicate with affected people.
The reviewed federal guidance does not establish a general statistic for how often companies experience social-media incidents. The risks are real, but a percentage or probability would not be supported by these sources.
Build a practical set of safeguards
1. Inventory accounts and access
List each official account, the email address used for recovery, people with administrator or publishing access, connected apps, and outside vendors with access. Assign an internal owner to each account. Review the inventory when responsibilities change, not just when an incident occurs.

2. Set policy and clear ownership
Write down who may administer, draft, approve, and publish company content. Define what information must not be posted, what employees are expected to do when discussing the company, and how to report a suspicious post, message, or login alert. Specify how personal and organizational accounts should remain separate. Set a review or escalation process appropriate to the sensitivity of the company’s content.
Policy should also describe credential expectations and incident reporting. Train people who post or administer accounts so they know the rules and where to raise concerns. CISA’s Social Media Account Protection: Capacity Enhancement Guide recommends a dedicated account-protection baseline; it was revised in August 2023 and is directed at federal agencies, so organizations should tailor its safeguards to their own context.

3. Minimize permissions and use individual credentials
Give access only to the smallest practical group. Where a platform offers business or corporate-account features and separate user credentials, use them instead of sharing one account password among staff. Remove a person’s access promptly when their role changes or employment ends. Review who is authorized on a regular schedule and after relevant staffing changes.
4. Strengthen authentication and recovery
Require multifactor authentication (MFA) for administrators, use unique credentials, and protect the email accounts used to recover social accounts. Where a service supports a phishing-resistant option, consider requiring it for administrative access. FTC business guidance discusses security keys as an option for employee access, but support varies: confirm that the social platform and identity provider work with a chosen FIDO2 key before buying or requiring one.

5. Review apps and vendors

Establish who at the company and vendor is responsible for reporting and handling an incident. FTC Start with Security offers broader business security guidance that supports limiting exposure and considering vendor access.
6. Monitor for warning signs and impersonation
Decide who checks account-security alerts, unusual logins, permission changes, and reports of fake company accounts. Give employees a simple way to report suspicious activity, and make it easy for customers to report a suspected impersonation. Monitoring is useful only when a named person or team can assess an alert and escalate it.

What to do if a company account is compromised
Use a response plan that identifies who can act and who must be consulted. The FTC’s Data Breach Response: A Guide for Business advises businesses to move quickly to secure systems and fix vulnerabilities that may have caused a breach. For a social-media incident, organize the response around these actions:
- Secure accounts and related systems. Use legitimate recovery and platform security processes to regain control, change compromised credentials, revoke unauthorized sessions or access where possible, and secure linked email accounts.
- Preserve evidence. Keep relevant alerts, messages, account activity, screenshots, and other records before removing content or changing settings when doing so will not delay necessary containment.
- Determine scope. Investigate what was accessed, posted, exposed, or changed; which accounts, connected services, and people may be affected; and whether the incident involved personal or other sensitive information.
- Address the cause. Remove unauthorized access, correct unsafe permissions or recovery settings, and fix the underlying weakness before restoring normal access.
- Coordinate communications and legal review. Involve security, communications, leadership, and legal advisers as appropriate. If people need to be informed, communicate accurately about what is known. Assess notification duties based on the facts and jurisdictions involved; obligations are not identical for every incident.
- Review and improve. Use the incident to update access, policy, training, monitoring, and response procedures.

- Operational ownership: Who reviews permissions, receives alerts, and approves exceptions to policy?
- Disclosure risk: Do policy and training make clear what staff must not post and how uncertain cases are escalated?
- Recovery readiness: Can the company revoke access, preserve records, investigate scope, and coordinate communication without first deciding who is in charge?
Platform capabilities and legal requirements can change. The FCC-hosted guide is older general guidance, and federal resources are not a substitute for jurisdiction-specific legal advice.
