Social media can help you find job openings and get noticed by recruiters, but public posts and profile details may also influence how an employer views your application. The effect depends on what is visible, whether it is relevant to the role, and how the employer uses it; an online profile is not a complete measure of someone’s suitability.
How social media can help you find work
Employers use social media and online platforms both to publicize vacancies and to find potential candidates. In a 2022 survey of employers in the Netherlands, 96% said they used social media or online HR platforms to disseminate vacancies, and 71% said they actively searched for candidates on them. Those figures describe vacancy promotion and candidate search in that survey; they are not rates of profile screening or applicant rejection. Netherlands Institute for Human Rights, 2022
A professional profile can also make it easier for a recruiter to locate relevant experience, credentials, skills, or work samples. Whether that helps depends on the field and role: a portfolio or demonstrable expertise may be useful in some occupations, while personal activity may have little bearing on others.
How public profiles can affect an application
Employers may consider publicly available social-media information as part of a background check. U.S. guidance from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Federal Trade Commission includes social-media use among examples of background information employers may seek. When employers use background information in hiring decisions, federal nondiscrimination law still applies. EEOC and FTC, “Background Checks: What Employers Need to Know”

Posts, images, comments, or profile details can expose personal information or be interpreted without the context in which they were shared. A detail that is visible online may also be irrelevant to whether a candidate can do the job. UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) guidance says vetting should be necessary, justified, transparent, and fair, with checks tied to a specific risk and filtered for relevance. ICO, “Pre-employment vetting of candidates”
What research says about profile impressions
There is no established current, representative worldwide rate for how often employers screen social-media profiles or how often applicants lose opportunities because of posts. The Dutch survey figures above measure vacancy dissemination and candidate searches, not those outcomes.

A preregistered 2025 experiment in Germany compared employer and non-employer responses to applicant profiles with different social-class cues. It found no overall preference difference between the highbrow and lowbrow activities studied, although responses differed by activity and whether it was related to the job. The experiment is evidence about those profiles and that setting—not a universal rule about what employers prefer or a real-world hiring rate. What job seekers can do
- Make relevant information easy to find. Where it suits your field, use a professional profile to present experience, skills, credentials, and work samples clearly.
- Review what is public. Check public-facing content for accuracy and context, and consider whether a post could reasonably be misunderstood. Privacy settings can limit access, but do not assume they guarantee that content will never be seen.
- Correct errors and add context. If an employer raises online information, explain relevant context and correct factual inaccuracies. The ICO recommends giving candidates an opportunity to comment on accuracy; that guidance is UK-specific. ICO guidance

In the United States
Hiring decisions based on background information must comply with federal nondiscrimination protections. If an employer uses a third-party company to compile background information, Fair Credit Reporting Act requirements may apply; state and local rules may add further obligations. Applicants can consult the EEOC’s explanation of background checks and applicant rights. In the United Kingdom
The ICO says an employer should be able to justify why checking public social-media profiles is necessary. Its guidance also calls for informing candidates, assessing information against a defined risk, avoiding intrusive or targeted checks, separating the checking role from the hiring decision where practicable, and giving candidates a chance to address accuracy. The ICO states: “If you want to check the candidate’s public social media profiles as part of your pre-employment vetting, you must be able to justify why this is necessary.” ICO candidate-vetting guidance These are UK data-protection guidance points, not universal rules for every country.
