What SmartAsset changed about finding financial advice
SmartAsset’s model joined two activities that often sit apart: helping consumers understand personal-finance questions and introducing them to financial professionals. Its consumer-facing side offered financial information, tools, and personalized calculators. SmartAdvisor, the marketplace side, connected consumers with advisors.

For consumers comparing ways to find advice, useful questions include how many advisors are presented, what information is shared to arrange an introduction, whether the advisor has a fiduciary obligation, and how to assess suitability. The available descriptions establish SmartAsset’s matching model, but do not establish that it is superior to other ways of finding an advisor.
Why advisors were part of the business model
SmartAdvisor also served financial professionals as a prospecting and lead-generation service. In January 2022, Concourse Financial Group Securities announced that it had selected SmartAdvisor as the first outside lead-generation service for its network of more than 500 financial professionals. The announcement described customized prospecting solutions with built-in compliance processes. This institutional use shows the marketplace had an advisor-facing business function as well as a consumer-facing one.

How SmartAsset became a unicorn
On June 24, 2021, SmartAsset announced a $110 million Series D led by TTV Capital. TechCrunch reported that the round valued the company at more than $1 billion, the threshold commonly used for a private-company “unicorn.” TechCrunch, citing Crunchbase, reported that SmartAsset had raised just over $161 million in total since its 2012 founding.
The Series D also included Javelin Venture Partners, Contour Venture Partners, Citi Ventures, New York Life Ventures, North Bridge Venture Partners, and CMFG Ventures, according to TechCrunch. The company’s prior Series C was a $28 million round led by Focus Financial Partners in June 2018.
The valuation is a reported private financing valuation from 2021, not a public-market price or a statement of present-day value. The sources available here do not establish a later valuation.
What the growth figures do—and do not—show
SmartAsset and the sources reporting on it published several growth measures around the funding and marketplace story. They refer to different things and different periods; audience reach, consumer-advisor matches, referred assets, and assets closed by advisors should not be treated as interchangeable measures.

These metrics help explain why the company attracted attention, but they have different owners, definitions, and reference periods. In particular, an audience figure does not show how many people became clients, while assets referred and assets closed describe distinct stages of an advisor relationship.
The significance of the 2021 milestone
SmartAsset’s funding story also drew attention to the limited representation of Black founders among high-value venture-backed companies. Co-founder and CEO Michael Carvin told TechCrunch: “I hope seeing more successful Black founders inspires more people of color to start companies so that one day this is not news.” The remark was his reflection on the milestone; it should not be read as a claim about the experience of every founder or the funding received by any broader group.
