Sandfall’s approach combined a focused game world, a small core team, modern production tools and outside partners. The result is better understood as evidence of one studio’s production model than proof that any indie team can deliver the same scale or outcome.
What was Expedition 33’s reported budget?
GameSpot reported on December 11, 2025, that The New York Times attributed a budget of “less than $10 million” to Sandfall Interactive. The available account does not itemize costs or establish what the figure includes, so it should not be treated as a confirmed all-in total for development, marketing, publishing or other expenses. GameSpot’s report also mentions an earlier estimate as high as $25 million, but does not establish that earlier number as verified; the two figures should not be averaged or treated as competing audited budgets.

That uncertainty matters when comparing games. The sources available here do not provide like-for-like budgets for other titles, or a consistent accounting definition, so they cannot support a reliable claim that Expedition 33 cost a particular fraction of a typical large game.
How did Sandfall make the game feel large?
It focused the playable scope
Rather than building an open world, the studio used bounded turn-based battle arenas and a miniature map representing the explorable realm. Those design choices are reported as part of the game’s scope; they are not a complete accounting of what the studio saved or spent. A more contained world can concentrate production effort, but it does not by itself explain the full budget or the game’s visual result.

It relied on a compact core team
Sandfall lead programmer Tom Guillermin described the core team as fewer than 30 people in an Unreal Engine interview. Co-founder François Meurisse later described an average home-studio team of about 30 during production. These are interview-time and production-period descriptions of the core studio, not a count of everyone who contributed. Unreal Engine’s interview with Guillermin also explains the team’s development approach.
It used engine tools to widen what the team could do
Guillermin credited Unreal Engine 5 and Blueprints with helping the team execute its vision. He said Blueprints let people outside programming better understand and contribute to game logic, supporting work across disciplines. Sandfall’s official site similarly says it believes modern game-making technology can help indie teams achieve high production value in realistic 3D graphics, and describes building pipelines that preserve small teams’ creativity and agility. Those are the studio’s stated beliefs, not proof that an engine or workflow guarantees a comparable result elsewhere.

Sandfall’s studio site identifies Unreal Engine as part of its production context. The engine is one element of the model, alongside the team, scope and outside support—not a substitute for them.
It brought in partners and contractors
A small core team does not mean every task was completed in-house. GameSpot reports external animation work and support in marketing and localization. Meurisse’s interview distinguishes the home studio from a wider network that included publishing, music, translation and QA. Kepler’s Matthew Handrahan likewise described Sandfall’s group of 30 as the creative nucleus while recognizing the broader credits and partner network. FPSHUB’s interview provides the team-and-partner context.

In a later interview, creative director Guillaume Broche credited localization partners with enabling more language versions than Sandfall could have handled in-house, and orchestra recording with giving the soundtrack a grander sound. Outsourcing can extend a small studio’s capabilities, but the sources do not state its full cost or how much work each partner performed.
Does Expedition 33 prove an indie team can deliver an AAA game?
It supports a narrower conclusion: a small independent studio can combine a bounded design, current tools and external expertise to pursue high production values. Sandfall has described its ambition in those terms. The sources do not establish that Expedition 33 is officially classified as AAA, that its reported budget covers every cost, or that the same formula guarantees another team equivalent quality or commercial success.

- Engaging Storyline: Dive into a rich, narrative-driven adventure with unexpected twists.
- Complex Puzzles: Test your problem-solving skills with challenging puzzles.
- Immersive World: Explore a visually stunning alien planet with breathtaking details and treacherous terrain.
In a CEDEC 2025 interview, Broche predicted that rising development costs could lead to more companies making AA-class games. He also credited Unreal Engine with helping teams estimate resources against production scale. Guillermin argued that many studios cannot keep matching ever-rising production values. These are the creators’ views about the industry’s direction, not a measured forecast. AUTOMATON WEST’s CEDEC interview captures their comments.
The distinction between high production value and formal AAA positioning is useful: the first describes an aspiration or impression; the second is not established as an official label for this game by the sources here. An interview with Sandfall and publisher Kepler representatives discusses the core team and wider contribution network. FPSHUB’s interview also clarifies why a compact studio headcount can coexist with a much longer credits list.

What the production model means for indie development
Expedition 33 is not a simple cost-cutting recipe. Its reported budget has no published accounting boundaries in the cited reporting, and its staffing figures refer to the core team rather than every contributor. What the accounts do show is a deliberate division of production: keep the playable scope focused, use tools that enable cross-disciplinary work, and bring in partners for capabilities that are not maintained entirely inside the studio.
Sandfall’s broader point is that technology and production choices can help a small team pursue ambitious presentation. Whether that model is practical for another studio depends on its game, skills, schedule, financing and access to partners—details these interviews do not turn into a universal formula.
