Rising crude oil prices can squeeze Indian companies that buy crude, petroleum products or fuel, but they do not affect every oil-sensitive stock in the same way. The result depends on what the company sells, how quickly it can pass higher costs to customers, government pricing decisions, refining margins, currency movements and demand. Crude’s direction alone is not enough to predict a share’s return.
Why international crude prices matter to India
India imports most of the crude it uses, so a higher global price can raise the country’s import bill and increase costs for businesses that depend on oil. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reported that crude import dependency rose from 77.6% in 2013–14 to 88.2% in 2024–25. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reported that India was the world’s second-largest net crude importer in 2023, importing 4.6 million barrels a day; its report projected imports of 5.8 million barrels a day by 2030. The latter figure is a forecast, not a current import reading.

Higher crude prices can also affect companies through freight, energy and petroleum-derived inputs. The size and timing of the impact vary: a company may absorb the added cost, pass it on, or face a change in demand if customers pay more.
How exposure differs by business
“Oil-sensitive stocks” cover businesses with very different revenue and cost structures. The same crude-price rise can help one part of a business while hurting another.

IndianOil’s 2025–26 Integrated Annual Report identifies crude-price volatility and freight as risks, and discusses their links to procurement economics, refining margins and working-capital cycles. That is a useful reminder that even within oil and gas, inventory and financing needs can shape the effect—not just the headline crude price.
Why petrol and diesel prices do not always move with crude
International crude prices do not automatically pass through to Indian pump prices in full or immediately. Taxes and government intervention can moderate or delay the transmission, while the pricing decisions of companies also matter. The RBI’s July 2025 analysis describes incomplete pass-through of international crude prices into domestic petrol and diesel prices. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has also described measures intended to help insulate consumers from high international prices, including crude-source diversification and ethanol blending.

For an OMC, therefore, a crude-price increase is not by itself a complete earnings signal. The relevant question is whether and when its selling prices and other revenues adjust relative to procurement costs, and how refining and product margins change over the same period.

Inflation and operating costs
Fuel prices can affect consumer inflation directly when domestic retail prices change, and indirectly when transport and other input costs rise. In a July 2025 RBI Bulletin article, RBI authors Sujata Kundu, Soumasree Tewari and Indranil Bhattacharyya estimated that a 10% increase in international crude prices could raise India’s headline inflation by around 20 basis points contemporaneously. This is a model estimate, not a guaranteed outcome for every price move; the authors also note that government intervention can mute the effect.

Higher transport or input costs may affect businesses beyond the oil sector. Whether that becomes a meaningful hit to a particular company depends on its cost structure and ability to adjust prices.
Import bill and currency
A more expensive oil import bill can add pressure to India’s external balances. The IMF’s India 2024 Article IV Consultation report, published on 6 February 2025, discusses current-account and fiscal exposure to the oil import bill. Currency changes can then alter the rupee cost of imports: a weaker rupee can compound the effect of a higher dollar-denominated crude price, while a stronger rupee can partly offset it. Neither currency direction is assured by a crude-price move alone.

Market volatility is not a stock forecast
An RBI study of quarterly data from 2004–2021 found increased volatility around OPEC supply-announcement days in domestic crude, currency, oil-and-gas-sector equities and sovereign yields. Its model also found that supply-news shocks raised domestic prices and caused output to fall for a short period. These findings concern a particular kind of news shock and the study’s data and model; they do not establish that every crude increase will push an individual Indian share up or down, or by how much.

To assess exposure, look beyond a company’s sector label and crude’s latest move. Its annual report and other current disclosures can help answer these questions:

- Input exposure: What share of operating costs comes from crude, fuel, petroleum products, freight or energy?
- Pass-through: Can the company raise selling prices, and how quickly? Could higher prices weaken demand?
- Policy exposure: Are retail prices regulated, administered or otherwise sensitive to government decisions?
- Business mix: How much of the company’s earnings comes from production, refining, marketing, transport or fuel-consuming operations?
- Margins and working capital: How do refining spreads, inventory valuation, procurement terms and cash tied up in operations affect results?
- Risk management: What do disclosures show about hedging, leverage and exposure to currency changes?
- Expectations and valuation: What earnings assumptions are already reflected in the share price? The RBI, IMF, IEA, ministry, IndianOil and CRISIL material cited here does not compare current valuations or establish a stock recommendation.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell investors
CRISIL’s June 2026 report describes fuel as 35–50% of airlines’ cost base. That is a sector estimate, not a verified figure for every Indian carrier. For an individual airline, check its own fuel consumption, fare-setting, hedging, aircraft and route mix, and current financial disclosures before drawing conclusions about sensitivity.
India’s longer-term policy response—including natural gas, renewable and alternate fuels, electric-vehicle charging, efficiency, domestic production, crude-import diversification and ethanol blending—may change the country’s exposure over time. The IEA notes that near-term domestic production growth is limited and import needs are rising, while electric vehicles, efficiency and biofuels may moderate future oil demand. These are medium- and long-term considerations; they do not remove the near-term cost sensitivity of companies that use imported oil or fuel.
The cited macroeconomic and sector evidence explains possible channels, not likely returns for a named stock. It does not provide current share prices, target prices or a company-by-company valuation screen. Those questions require up-to-date company disclosures and valuation analysis in addition to a view on crude.
