How did the Lauder family make its money?
Estée and Joseph Lauder founded Estée Lauder Cosmetics in 1946. The company’s official founder biography says Estée learned to formulate creams from her uncle, then sold skincare and makeup in beauty salons, demonstrating products to customers. The company identifies a $800 Saks Fifth Avenue order in 1947 as the couple’s first major order. These details come from the company’s own history, rather than an independent account.
That early approach—personal demonstrations, sampling and word of mouth—helped establish the business. It grew from a family operation into a publicly traded global prestige-beauty company. The company says its products are sold in approximately 150 countries and territories; that is its corporate description, not a figure from a dated statistical report.
How rich is the Lauder family?
Forbes’ 2024 America’s Richest Families ranking estimated the Lauder family’s wealth at $25.9 billion. That is the latest combined-family estimate established here, and it should be read as Forbes’ 2024 estimate—not as a current figure for October 2026. A current combined-family net-worth estimate has not been established.

A family net-worth estimate is different from the voting-power figures reported in the company’s proxy. Voting rights describe influence over corporate decisions; they do not reveal the value of all family assets and liabilities. Nor can one person’s live billionaire estimate simply be added to another’s to create a reliable family total.
Why does the family have substantial control of the company?
The Estée Lauder Companies’ 2026 proxy statement describes the publicly traded company as family-controlled. As of the record date for its 2026 annual meeting, shares subject to the family stockholders’ agreement represented approximately 82% of voting power. This is a governance measure, not a claim that the family owns 82% of the company’s economic value.

The proxy explains the role of the company’s two share classes: Class A shares carry one vote each, while Class B shares—limited to family members and related entities—carry ten votes each. Class B stock represented approximately 31.6% of common shares outstanding on that record date. The difference between share count and voting power helps explain how control can be greater than the family’s proportion of common shares.
How did later generations build the business?
Leonard Lauder joined the company in 1958 and Ronald Lauder in 1964. The company credits Leonard with initiating international expansion and establishing its first research and development laboratory. He served as president from 1972 to 1995, CEO from 1982 to 1999, and chairman from 1995 to 2009. Leonard died in 2025; he should not be described as holding a current company role.

Family members continued to have leadership and governance roles. The 2026 proxy identifies William P. Lauder as board chair and describes family members serving on the board and in company roles. The company’s family-history page also describes Aerin Lauder’s work leading AERIN Beauty and in style and design, Jane Lauder’s senior company roles and board service, and Gary M. Lauder’s board membership and venture-investor work. For current governance, the dated proxy is more authoritative than undated company biographies.
What the wealth and control figures do—and do not—tell you
