Re:

How Rich Is Greenland? What Its Rare-Earth Reserves Are—and Aren’t—Worth

Greenland’s reported rare-earth reserves are substantial, but a reserve quantity is not a dollar valuation—and the island is not currently producing rare earths.

Greenland has substantial mineral potential, but the available official figures do not show that its rare-earth reserves are worth trillions of dollars. The U.S. Geological Survey lists 1.5 million metric tons of Greenlandic rare-earth reserves, but that is a measure of quantity—not a cash valuation, a forecast of mine income, or proof that the material can be profitably extracted.

To understand Greenland’s economic stakes, separate geological estimates from operating mines, potential project economics, and the reasons the United States is seeking a closer Arctic defense relationship.

What does “rich” mean when discussing Greenland’s minerals?

Greenland is geologically promising, but mineral potential is not the same as realized wealth. A reserve figure describes an estimated quantity of material under a particular classification. It does not say how much can be recovered, what it would cost to mine and process, whether a project can secure financing and permits, or what its products would sell for after reaching buyers.

The USGS’s Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026: Rare Earths lists Greenland’s rare-earth reserves at 1.5 million metric tons. The same table reports no Greenland mine production in either 2024 or 2025. The figure is therefore a reported reserve quantity, not a valuation in dollars or evidence of current output.

Why 1.5 million metric tons cannot be translated into trillions

A tempting calculation is to multiply a tonnage by a market price. That would not establish what a deposit is worth. Rare-earth-bearing material must be evaluated by its composition and concentration, the cost and feasibility of extraction, the processing route needed to separate usable elements, and whether saleable products can be produced at competitive cost.

A meaningful economic assessment would also need to account for infrastructure, energy, transportation, labor, environmental constraints, regulation, project financing, and the development stage. A reserve estimate alone does not answer these questions. The official sources cited here do not provide a supported dollar valuation for Greenland’s rare-earth reserves, so “worth trillions” is not an established conclusion.

How much of Greenland’s mineral potential is established?

The Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) says 24 of the 34 raw materials listed as critical by the European Union are present in Greenland, citing a 2023 MiMa assessment. That is a measure of geological occurrence, not proof that each material has a commercially viable deposit.

GEUS explains the distinction: “However, only in a few cases have the occurrences been thoroughly quantified, which is a prerequisite for classifying them as actual deposits.” Its January 9, 2026 overview also estimates that the ice sheet covers approximately 80 percent of Greenland, making it difficult to study the underlying geology in detail. GEUS does not expect ice retreat to expose significant new land for exploration soon.

Does Greenland currently mine rare earths?

No rare-earth mine production is reported for Greenland in the USGS 2026 table. GEUS reported two active mines as of January 2026, but neither was a rare-earth mine:

  • A gold mine in South Greenland.
  • An anorthosite mine in West Greenland, producing feldspar.

Those operating mines demonstrate that mining takes place on the island; they do not establish that rare-earth production is underway or that prospective deposits can be developed on the same terms.

What makes a Greenland mining project difficult to develop?

Associated Press reporting on Arctic mining describes the practical challenges facing projects in Greenland: remoteness, limited road and rail infrastructure, the need to generate power and bring in skilled workers, environmental concerns, and difficulties processing rare earths in Greenland’s geology. These are reported barriers, not proof that a project could never become economic.

For a fair comparison between deposits or countries, raw tonnage is only one factor. The relevant questions include how confidently the deposit is classified, its grade and mineralogy, the processing route, available infrastructure and labor, environmental and regulatory requirements, the project’s financing and development stage, and whether it can produce saleable separated products at competitive cost. AP quoted Critical Minerals Institute founder and executive director Tracy Hughes describing the gap between headline claims and project fundamentals: “The hype far outstrips the hard science and economics behind these critical minerals.” That is Hughes’s assessment, not an official government finding.

Why is the United States pushing for a closer relationship with Greenland?

Minerals are part of the conversation, but the latest agreement is framed around defense and security. Greenland is a self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark. The USGS identifies Greenland’s Mineral Activities Act, effective January 1, 2024, as the primary framework for prospecting, exploration, and mining; the Greenland Mineral Resources Authority handles mineral-sector matters.

On September 22, 2026, the United States, Denmark, and Greenland signed an agreement supplementing existing defense arrangements. The agreement provides for modernization and expansion at Pituffik Space Base and allows additional defense areas under mutually agreed procedures. It also acknowledges U.S.–Greenland minerals cooperation, while reaffirming the Kingdom of Denmark’s sovereignty and Greenlanders’ right to self-determination. It is subject to necessary parliamentary procedures before it enters into force.

The Government of Greenland announcement quoted Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen: “The agreement recognizes that we are a people with the right to self-determination. At the same time, we are recognized as a part of our common security in the Arctic.” The agreement does not transfer ownership of Greenland or give the United States control of its mineral deposits.

What is a careful financial takeaway?

Greenland has a reported 1.5 million metric tons of rare-earth reserves and broader critical-mineral potential, but those figures do not establish a trillion-dollar value. There is no rare-earth mine production listed for 2024 or 2025, and the number of thoroughly quantified occurrences is limited. The U.S. agreement recognizes minerals cooperation, but its stated purpose and provisions center on defense and security. Mineral potential, commercial wealth, and geopolitical interest are related questions—not interchangeable answers.
