Global Workplace Analytics estimated in a January 12, 2021 scenario that U.S. employers could save nearly $11,000 per remote worker per year, while workers could save nearly $3,000. Those are modeled estimates—not guaranteed or audited savings—and they depend on a specific mix of eligible workers, remote-work frequency, and costs.
What the nearly $11,000 estimate means
Global Workplace Analytics (GWA) framed its estimate around 48 million U.S. full-time employees with jobs it considered compatible with remote work who said they wanted to work remotely at least weekly. In that scenario, they worked from home an average of 2.5 days per week. GWA estimated more than $500 billion in annual employer savings overall, or nearly $11,000 per remote worker, net of employers’ extra costs to support remote work. The release was published January 12, 2021; it is a scenario estimate, not a measurement of what every company saves. GWA’s 2021 release
GWA attributes potential employer savings to productivity, agility, real estate, absenteeism, and turnover. Its broader savings page also identifies costs such as utilities, janitorial services, security, maintenance, parking, transit subsidies, office supplies, equipment, and furniture. These are categories that may change, not automatic savings: a company that keeps the same office footprint and facilities costs may not capture the real-estate portion of the estimate. How workers may save—and what may offset it
In the same 2021 scenario, GWA estimated nearly $150 billion in annual personal savings, averaging nearly $3,000 per worker, after accounting for employees’ extra work-from-home costs. Its statistics page separately estimates $600–$6,000 a year for a half-time telecommuter, with travel, parking, and food as primary savings and energy and home-food costs included in the calculation. These estimates have different framing and should not be treated as a single universal range. GWA’s 2021 release GWA’s remote-work statistics

GWA’s broader savings page gives another figure: $2,000–$7,000 in transportation and work-related costs under its described national scenario. It also mentions possible care-cost reductions and home-office tax breaks. Those figures and possibilities do not establish what a particular household will save or whether a worker qualifies for a tax benefit; costs, arrangements, and tax rules vary. GWA’s savings overview
Potential savings depend on the worker’s actual routine. Fewer commutes can reduce driving or transit expenses, parking, and meals bought near work. At home, energy use and food costs may rise, and a suitable workspace may require equipment. GWA’s 2021 release quotes an estimate of around $670 per employee per year to outfit a home office from Matthew Lieb, president of Design Public Group. That is a quoted estimate in the release, not a current, independently verified price or a required budget for every worker. Time saved is another modeled benefit
GWA’s 2021 release estimated that workers in its national scenario would regain the equivalent of 14 days per year otherwise spent in traffic. Its statistics page gives a separate estimate of 11 workdays a year for a half-time telecommuter. Both are model outputs, not a promise about an individual’s commute; travel time and remote-work frequency differ. GWA’s 2021 release GWA’s remote-work statistics
Why a company’s actual savings can differ
A national estimate cannot show whether a particular employer will save money. The financial outcome depends on whether remote work changes costs or results at that organization. For example, an employer may avoid some facilities or parking costs if it can reduce space, but that saving does not follow merely from allowing employees to work at home. Productivity, absenteeism, and turnover also depend on the organization and how work is managed; GWA’s identified categories do not prove a specific company will improve on them. GWA’s savings page describes a broader scenario in which people with remote-compatible jobs who want to work at home do so half the time. It estimates more than $700 billion a year in combined economic benefit, including over $500 billion in business savings and $270 billion in productivity value. These are GWA model outputs under that page’s assumptions, not independently observed totals or a company-level forecast. GWA’s savings overview

- Set the work pattern. Record remote days per week, commuting distance, and whether working remotely is optional or required. A half-time arrangement is not equivalent to fully remote work.
- List employer costs that could change. Consider leased space, utilities, facilities, supplies, parking, and transit support, alongside any measured changes in absenteeism, turnover, and productivity. Do not count a cost as saved unless the employer can reduce or avoid it.
- List worker costs that could change. Compare commuting, parking, and meals with household energy, home-food, and workspace expenses. Include care costs only where the arrangement actually changes them.
- Confirm setup support. Ask who provides or reimburses technology and furniture, and what any stipend covers. GWA’s white-paper catalog lists a home-office stipend fact sheet about cost sharing; access to that material may be restricted. GWA’s white-paper catalog
- Keep estimates in context. Label whether a figure is a current company measurement or a modeled national estimate, and retain its date, geography, frequency, and assumptions. GWA points readers to calculators for customized estimates; calculator results depend on the inputs and assumptions used. GWA’s savings overview
What the headline cannot tell you
- Nearly $11,000 is GWA’s per-worker estimate for its 2021 U.S. scenario, not a typical or guaranteed result for every employer.
- The worker figures differ across GWA pages because their scenarios and framing differ; do not combine them as though they measure the same arrangement.
- The estimates identify possible cost categories but do not establish that remote work causes better productivity, retention, or real-estate outcomes at a specific company.
- The cited pages do not establish current tax obligations or an individual worker’s eligibility for a home-office tax benefit.
