Their value depends on whether the ranking’s measures—such as research, teaching resources, placements and salary—match what you care about. For the latest results verified here, India Rankings 2025 placed IIT Madras first in Engineering and IIM Ahmedabad first in Management; check the official NIRF rankings portal for any newer release.
How reliable are NIRF rankings?
They are best treated as a transparent, structured comparison tool—not as a definitive answer to “Which college is best?” The Ministry of Education publishes the framework and weights, and readers can examine component scores as well as overall positions. That makes it possible to see what contributes to a result rather than relying on rank alone.
There are important limits. Many inputs are reported by institutions, and a disclosed formula cannot by itself establish that every input is accurate or that the resulting rank predicts an individual student’s learning, employment or career outcomes. The official material supports evaluating the framework and its data controls; it does not establish an independent predictive test of NIRF rankings.
What the 2025 framework measures
The 2025 Engineering and Management methodologies use the same broad weights. These are the Ministry’s framework weights, not a claim that every student should value each category equally.

| Parameter | Weight in Engineering and Management | What it broadly covers |
|---|---|---|
| Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR) | 30% | Teaching and institutional resources, including faculty and student-related measures. |
| Research and Professional Practice (RP) | 30% | Research output and quality, alongside professional practice measures. |
| Graduation Outcomes (GO) | 20% | Discipline-specific outcomes such as placements, higher studies and salary. |
| Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) | 10% | Measures related to diversity, access and inclusion. |
| Perception (PR) | 10% | Peer and other perception measures. |
The categories share broad weights but not identical submetrics. In Engineering, the detailed measures include student strength, faculty-student ratio, faculty qualifications and experience, financial resources, publications and their quality, patents, projects and professional practice, placements and higher studies, university examinations, median salary, doctoral graduates, diversity, accessibility and peer perception. The Ministry’s 2025 Engineering methodology sets out the full criteria.
Management’s outcome and research measures
In Management, the 2025 Graduation Outcomes category assigns 40 marks to placement and higher studies, 40 to median salary and 20 to university examinations. Its research group includes publication quantity and quality, as well as projects, professional practice and executive development programs. Consult the 2025 Management methodology for the detailed framework.

What NIRF’s checks can—and cannot—tell you
NIRF’s 2025 report identifies Scopus and Web of Science as sources for publication and citation data and Derwent Innovation for patents. It also describes expert review of outliers and anomalies, requests for clarification or documentary support, and a public-feedback opportunity on submitted data. These controls offer useful scrutiny of the inputs.
However, the report says final responsibility for the accuracy of institution-submitted data remains with the institutions. Validation procedures therefore improve transparency but do not amount to a guarantee that every reported figure is error-free. The Ministry’s India Rankings 2025 report describes both the data sources and controls.

Why rank is not an absolute score
NIRF states in its FAQ: “This score is a relative score, not absolute.” A position orders institutions against others in the same category and edition; it is not a universal grade that measures an institution independently of its comparison group. A rank can also conceal differences in component scores, so two institutions’ overall positions alone do not tell you whether their strengths align with your priorities. See the NIRF FAQ.
The weights illustrate why students may judge the same result differently. Teaching/resources and research together account for 60% of the broad score; graduation outcomes contribute 20%, while outreach/inclusivity and perception make up the remaining 20%. A student focused primarily on compensation or placement may care more about those outcomes than the overall framework does. That is an interpretation of the published weights, not an independent study of how well they predict careers.

The Ministry released India Rankings 2025 on 4 September 2025. IIT Madras ranked first in both Overall and Engineering, while IIM Ahmedabad ranked first in Management. The official India Rankings 2025 results include category lists and recent rank histories. Those results show how institutions placed under the 2025 framework; they do not establish that either institution is the best choice for every student or program.
The NIRF portal showed that 2026 data submission had closed, but no 2026 ranking release was verified here. The latest published results verified were for 2025, so confirm the portal’s results page before relying on these positions.

How to compare IITs or IIMs for your decision
- Use the same category and edition. Compare Engineering with Engineering or Management with Management, and avoid mixing results from different years.
- Look past the overall position. Compare component scores to identify whether a difference comes from resources, research, outcomes, inclusivity or perception.
- Check career measures if they drive your choice. Review placement and higher-study measures and median salary, then consult current, program-specific information. The broad rank blends these figures with other criteria.
- Match research measures to your aims. If research opportunity is important, examine the relevant research components rather than assuming a higher overall rank guarantees a better fit.
- Make the final fit judgment yourself. Compare the program’s current information with your goals; NIRF’s institutional ranking is not a substitute for evaluating the course and student experience that matter to you.
India Rankings 2025 covered 7,692 unique institutions and received 14,163 applications, according to the Ministry. These are participation counts, not evidence that every institution in India was ranked.
