Rahul Joseph founded White Gold in 2017 to give Indian households an organised way to sell used gold jewellery for cash. The business combined branch-based testing and digital payment with a supply chain that sent purchased gold on to jewellery manufacturers. Joseph said he started it with ₹5 crore in bootstrapped capital; early turnover and branch figures reported in 2020, however, should be read as historical snapshots rather than evidence of the company’s current scale.
The gap Joseph saw in the gold market
Before White Gold, Joseph said he worked in his family’s real-estate business and founded White Projects in 2015. He wanted to build a separate business that could hedge his exposure to real estate. The idea for White Gold came from a mismatch he saw in how households could access the value of gold: buying gold was familiar, but selling used jewellery through an organised service was less so.

Joseph told YourStory in 2020 that people had often exchanged old jewellery for new pieces or sold it to a local goldsmith for a reduced value. White Gold’s proposition was to test and value used jewellery, then buy it from the customer. That transaction offered liquidity by transferring ownership of the gold rather than requiring the household to keep the jewellery.
Joseph described launching White Gold in 2017 with ₹5 crore of bootstrapped capital. The initial insight was not simply that Indian households owned gold, but that a formal, repeatable service could make selling it more approachable. In a 2020 interview, he cited an estimate of 25,000 tonnes of household gold in India. That figure was presented as his market estimate, not as an independently verified current statistic.

How White Gold’s buying process worked
White Gold’s model relied on physical branches where staff could assess jewellery and explain a proposed valuation. Joseph described using spectrometers to test gold, proprietary software to enter customer data, and digital payments to complete purchases. He said a transaction took about 30 minutes. These are details he gave in the 2020 interview, not independently audited measures of service time or testing accuracy.
In a June 2023 article, White Gold described additional elements of its process: displaying live rates, using CCTV, validating Aadhaar, using AERB-certified spectrometers, and making cashless payments. Those operational details are the company’s own description. Joseph also told StartupTalky in 2025 that live MCX-led rates and cashless digital payments formed part of the customer proposition.

Where the purchased gold went
White Gold’s business connected household sellers with jewellery manufacturing. Joseph said the company processed the gold it bought and supplied it to jewellery manufacturers as raw material. In that model, the company was not merely arranging a one-off resale between two individuals: it bought used jewellery, prepared the gold for another commercial use, and sold the resulting material into manufacturing.

What the reported growth figures do—and do not—show
White Gold’s reported footprint and turnover changed across the available dated accounts. YourStory’s June 2020 profile reported more than 50 branches across Karnataka and Kerala, over 100 employees, and ₹83 crore in turnover for the financial year discussed in the article. The report also quoted a forecast of turnover above ₹100 crore. That was a forecast at the time, not evidence that the target was later achieved.
In a February 2025 interview, Joseph described the network as having grown from five to more than 50 stores across Karnataka and Kerala. These figures come from different reports and dates, and both describe the company’s own or reported historical scale. They do not establish White Gold’s branch count, staffing, or turnover in 2026; the available dated material does not substantiate a current figure.

Selling gold is different from borrowing against it
A gold sale and a gold loan can both provide liquidity, but they are different choices. Selling transfers ownership of the jewellery in exchange for payment. Pledging jewellery for a loan leaves ownership with the borrower subject to the loan arrangement, who must meet repayment terms to recover the pledged item. The relevant comparison is the amount payable from a sale versus the loan amount after charges, repayment obligations, and the conditions for getting the jewellery back. The cited material does not establish current loan terms or a general loan-to-value figure, so those should be checked with the lender rather than inferred from Joseph’s commentary.

What the story says about White Gold’s model
Joseph’s account of White Gold is a story about organising a transaction that had often been handled informally. The company sought to make testing, pricing, records, and payment more structured through branches and technology, then connect household gold to manufacturers that could use it as raw material.
