How Publishers Can Audit Revenue From Google News and Discover

Search Console measures Google News and Discover traffic, not publisher ad earnings. Here’s how to align its reports with analytics and monetization records.

Google News and Discover referrals are traffic—not a revenue report. To audit their financial contribution, separate each Google surface in Search Console, align its traffic data with your analytics and ad-system records, and document how the publisher-side revenue was attributed. Google says it does not run ads on Google News or the News tab in Google Search; revenue recorded by a publisher’s ad system is therefore not, by itself, money paid by Google for those referrals.

What the audit can—and cannot—show

Search Console reports clicks, impressions and click-through rate (CTR) for eligible Google News and Discover activity. It does not report a publisher’s ad-server earnings. The audit can show how traffic from a given surface coincided with visits, ad impressions and revenue on the publisher’s properties. It cannot establish that Google paid the publisher a particular amount for those clicks.

Google states, “We don’t run ads on Google News or the news results tab on Google Search,” in its How Google supports the news industry page, accessed October 7, 2026. Publishers may earn from ads on their own websites, apps or videos, and through other arrangements. Keep those revenue streams distinct from referral metrics.

Use bounded language in reports: “Search Console recorded X Discover clicks to canonical page Y during the period; our ad system reported Z revenue for mapped page impressions under its own attribution.” Attribute a payment to Google only when a separate contract or payment record supports that claim.

Keep Google’s three traffic surfaces separate

“Google news traffic” is not one Search Console category. Preserve the surface distinction in exports and dashboards; otherwise, the team may compare different populations or mistake one product’s traffic for another’s.

Surface Where to report it Scope and useful measures
Google News Search Console’s Google News performance report news.google.com and Google News apps; clicks, impressions and average CTR, with page, country and date groupings. Metrics are assigned to canonical URLs. Daily reporting uses Pacific Time, except in the 24-hour view. Google News app in-article swipes and notifications are not counted as clicks or impressions. Google News performance report.
News tab in Google Search Search Console’s Search results report, filtered to the News search type This is separate from the Google News report. Do not add it to Google News app or news.google.com traffic without retaining the separate label. Google News performance report.
Discover Search Console’s Discover performance report, when the property meets reporting requirements Clicks, impressions and CTR, with available page, country, date and appearance groupings. Metrics are assigned to canonical URLs; dates in the report use Pacific Time. Access and visible rows are subject to impression thresholds. Discover performance report.

Google’s Search Central guidance says Discover reporting covers eligible content from the previous 16 months, subject to a minimum impression threshold. Data below the row threshold can still be included in site totals, so visible rows may not add up to the total. Google Discover guidance.

Build a like-for-like comparison

Before joining traffic to revenue, standardize the dates, URLs and level of aggregation. Search Console defaults to the last three months, but its date filter can be changed. Use the same complete window in the publisher’s analytics and ad-system reports.

  1. Set one date window and boundary. Google News daily data and Discover date tables use Pacific Time; a 24-hour Google News view is an exception. If the publisher’s systems use another time zone, shift timestamps or aggregate to common daily boundaries before comparing them. Google lists time-zone differences among reasons Search Console can disagree with other data sources. Use complete days when possible.
  2. Map URL variants to canonical pages. Google News and Discover assign page metrics to canonical URLs. A duplicate, alternate or landing URL may show no Search Console values even when the canonical page receives them. Normalize URLs before matching them to analytics landing pages and ad reports.
  3. Preserve the surface and dimensions. Export or record each surface separately. Keep page, country and date dimensions where useful, and retain Discover appearance groupings when available. Don’t combine the reports into one total until their scopes and filters are documented.
  4. Mark incomplete or provisional periods. Recent Search Console data may be preliminary and change over the next few hours. The 24-hour view shows preliminary hourly points by default. Label partial days and provisional figures rather than treating them as settled.
  5. Record threshold effects. Discover’s impression thresholds affect report access and row visibility. A missing page row is not proof of zero activity; compare visible rows with the report total and note that the row sum may be incomplete.

Join traffic to publisher revenue records

Once the traffic side is normalized, compare it with the publisher’s own analytics and monetization systems for the same pages and periods. Google’s 2020 News Business Optimization Playbook recommends reviewing revenue and revenue sources daily, as well as monitoring traffic shifts, match rates, impression allocation and unfilled impressions. The playbook is operational guidance from March 2020, not a guarantee that every current ad interface uses the same labels.

A practical reconciliation table can include the following fields. Search Console supplies the traffic measures; sessions, ad impressions and revenue come from the publisher’s own systems.

Field Purpose
Date, normalized time zone Ensures the traffic and monetization periods share the same boundaries.
Google surface Keeps Google News, Search News and Discover distinct.
Canonical page Provides a consistent join key across URL variants.
Search Console clicks, impressions and CTR Describes reported referral performance for that surface.
Analytics sessions or landing visits Shows how the publisher’s analytics system recorded visits; its counting rules may differ from Search Console.
Ad impressions and reported revenue Captures publisher-side monetization for the matched page and period.
House yield measure Provides the publisher’s chosen revenue-per-thousand-impressions or other internal yield metric; state its formula and attribution basis.
Reconciliation notes Records unmatched URLs, incomplete data, modeled allocations and other known limitations.

Keep revenue sources separate where the publisher’s systems allow it—for example, direct-sold, auction or other demand categories. If the system allocates revenue by model or cannot attribute it to an individual page, label that limitation. Do not present an allocation as a direct Search Console measurement.

Investigate gaps before interpreting results

A difference between Search Console clicks, analytics visits and ad-reported revenue does not automatically signal a tracking fault or a monetization change. Check the systems’ definitions and reporting windows before explaining the movement.

  • Dates and time zones: Confirm that the systems cover the same complete days and use compatible boundaries.
  • Surface scope: Verify that Google News, Search News and Discover have not been mixed or filtered differently.
  • URL mapping: Check canonical URLs against analytics landing pages and ad-report page keys.
  • Data maturity: Identify partial days and preliminary Search Console data.
  • Thresholds: Check Discover totals as well as visible rows; low-impression pages may not appear individually.
  • Counting rules: Remember that Search Console and other systems can count activity differently. For example, Google News app in-article swipes and notifications are not counted as clicks or impressions.
  • Monetization chain: Inspect ad demand or match rate, impression allocation, unfilled impressions and revenue-source mix in the publisher’s own reporting.

Read Discover changes cautiously

Discover is not a predictable substitute for query-driven Search traffic. Google Search Central says, “Traffic from Discover is less predictable or dependable when compared to keyword-driven search visits,” in guidance updated March 9, 2026. The guidance identifies shifts in user interests, content types and Search updates as possible causes of performance changes; a decline alone does not establish a site defect or an editorial-quality problem. Treat Discover as supplemental traffic, not a stable revenue forecast. Google Discover guidance.

Do not confuse referrals with separate Google arrangements

Google News Showcase may appear in Google News and Discover, but participation and payment depend on a publisher’s own arrangement. Audit any Showcase or subscription-related contract revenue against the relevant agreement and payment statements, not against Search Console clicks. Referral reporting does not establish eligibility, participation or contract value.

Some frequently quoted figures also need careful boundaries. Google’s industry page says that more than 24 billion monthly clicks go from Google Search and Google News results to publisher websites; this is Google’s estimate and is not Discover-only traffic. The same page reports that under 2% of global Google Search queries in 2022 were news queries—a historical share, not a current traffic or revenue estimate. Neither figure can be used to calculate an individual publisher’s earnings.

Google also cites a PwC study of 218 publishers in 38 countries, with estimated average value-of-a-click figures of US$0.06–US$0.08 and US$0.13–US$0.15 for regional and local publishers. The cited page does not state the study year. These are modeled estimates, not a guaranteed payment, a Discover rate or an individual publisher’s realized revenue. Google’s page also describes a US$1 billion original News Showcase commitment and says more than 2,300 publications were being paid for participation; use the separately dated June 2023 count rather than treating the page’s undated “today” phrasing as a current audited census. These figures describe distinct contexts, not a conversion rate for Search Console traffic. Google’s news-industry overview.
