How Public Blockchains Work With Cryptocurrency Exchanges

A public blockchain records a cryptocurrency transaction; an exchange separately decides when that transaction counts as a deposit in your account. For a successful deposit, the asset, network, destination address, and any required memo or tag must match the exchange’s instructions. Even after a transfer appears on-chain, it may remain pending until the exchange’s confirmation and processing requirements are met.

Two systems handle a crypto deposit

A public blockchain is a shared database maintained across network computers. It records transactions in blocks that refer to earlier blocks; accepted transactions change the state recorded by the network. Ethereum’s explanation puts it simply: “A blockchain is a public database that is updated and shared across many computers in a network.”

An exchange adds a separate account system on top of that public record. It monitors networks and applies its own rules for recognizing deposits and making funds available to customers. The blockchain does not update your exchange balance directly, and an exchange account balance is not itself a transaction on the public chain.

What happens to a transaction on a public blockchain?

  1. A transaction is prepared and signed. A wallet or platform creates an instruction, such as sending an asset to an address, and signs it with the relevant private key. The signature authorizes the transaction under that key; it does not prove that the receiving exchange has credited the funds. Ethereum’s transaction documentation describes signed transactions and their broadcast to the network.
  2. The transaction is broadcast and may wait. On Ethereum, a signed transaction can enter a transaction pool while it waits to be included in a block. Other networks have their own transaction formats and processes; a pending transaction is not yet a completed deposit.
  3. A block producer proposes inclusion. On Ethereum, validators propose blocks and attest to blocks they consider valid. Nodes check proposed state changes against the network’s rules and follow the protocol’s rules for determining the canonical chain.
  4. The network establishes the recorded state. Once accepted into the chain, the transaction changes the state recorded there. Confirmation and finality behavior varies by protocol, so an on-chain status should be interpreted according to the specific network.

Ethereum’s proof-of-stake system is one example, not a universal model

Ethereum uses proof of stake: validators propose blocks and attest to valid blocks. The protocol uses checkpoint votes to establish finality. Ethereum’s documentation describes finality as requiring a supermajority—at least two-thirds of staked ETH—to vote for checkpoint links. These mechanics apply to Ethereum, not automatically to Bitcoin, other proof-of-stake networks, layer-2 networks, or exchange ledgers. See Ethereum’s proof-of-stake documentation.

Ethereum’s documentation also lists a 12-second slot duration and a 32 ETH validator deposit. These are Ethereum protocol parameters, not a promise that a transaction will be confirmed or an exchange deposit credited within a particular time.

How a blockchain transfer becomes an exchange deposit

  1. Select the asset and network on the receiving exchange. Check that the exchange supports that exact asset on that exact network for your account and region. A ticker symbol alone is not enough to identify the correct network.
  2. Copy the deposit details shown for that selection. Use the address provided by the exchange and include any required memo or tag. Do not reuse an address or network instruction from a different asset or deposit screen.
  3. Initiate the transfer from the sending wallet or platform. Match the destination address, asset, and network to the exchange’s instructions. Coinbase warns that unsupported assets or networks may lead to permanent loss; Kraken also directs customers to select an available network and notes that some deposits require additional destination information. Their instructions are platform-specific, so check the current deposit page immediately before sending. Coinbase Exchange deposit instructions and Kraken’s deposit guidance provide examples.
  4. Check the transaction on the relevant network. Use the transaction hash to look up the transfer on an explorer for that network, then compare its status with the exchange’s deposit screen. A visible transaction may still need additional confirmations before the exchange credits it.
  5. Wait for the exchange’s stated status and availability. Confirm whether the deposit is available for trading, withdrawal, or both; these milestones can differ.

Why can a crypto deposit be pending?

“Pending” can describe different stages. A transaction may be waiting for inclusion or confirmations on the network, or it may be visible on-chain while the exchange completes its own deposit processing. The exchange’s status and the network explorer answer related but different questions: the explorer shows the transaction’s network state, while the exchange shows how it is handling the customer deposit.

Confirmation requirements are asset-specific and platform-specific. Coinbase Exchange says its required count varies by asset and gives Bitcoin with two confirmations as an example. Kraken describes a deposit that has enough confirmations to be credited for trading but is not yet available for withdrawal, followed by a later successful state when withdrawals are available. Those examples illustrate why “on-chain,” “credited,” “tradable,” and “withdrawable” are not interchangeable; they are not universal timing or confirmation rules. See Coinbase Exchange’s pending-deposit guidance and Kraken’s deposit-status definitions.

Before sending: a deposit checklist

  • Verify that the destination exchange supports the exact asset-and-network combination and that it is available in your region.
  • Copy the deposit address from the exchange’s current instructions and provide any required memo or tag.
  • Check the current confirmation threshold and deposit minimum for that asset and network; both can change.
  • For a first transfer, follow the exchange’s guidance. Coinbase recommends a small test deposit in one support article, but a test does not guarantee that a later transfer will be safe or recoverable.
  • If a deposit is delayed, compare the transaction hash and network status with the exchange’s deposit status, then follow that exchange’s support instructions. Do not assume that an on-chain transaction automatically qualifies for recovery or credit.

What to compare when choosing a deposit route

If you are comparing deposit procedures, look at the details that determine whether a transfer can be received and when it becomes usable—not just whether the exchange lists the asset.

Check Why it matters
Supported network for the asset The sending network must match a network the receiving exchange supports for that asset.
Confirmation requirement It affects how long a deposit may remain pending; the requirement is specific to the asset and exchange.
Trading versus withdrawal availability An exchange may make funds available for trading before allowing withdrawal.
Memo or tag requirement Some deposit flows require extra destination information in addition to the address.
Regional availability and unsupported-deposit handling Supported options and the treatment of mistaken or unsupported transfers are platform-specific.

Support pages document procedures; they do not establish which exchange is faster or safer overall. Deposit rules, supported networks, thresholds, minimums, and regional availability can change, so use the exchange’s current instructions for the transfer you are making.
