That was $200 above the disc-drive PS5’s 2020 launch price and $300 above the PS5 Digital Edition’s. Earlier PlayStation and Xbox launch prices offer useful context, but these are nominal dollars from different years—not an inflation-adjusted measure of cost.
PS5 Pro launch price vs. PS5: the closest comparison
The most direct comparison is with the two PS5 models that launched in North America in 2020. Sony announced the Pro at $699.99 in 2024; the disc-drive PS5 launched at $499.99 and the Digital Edition at $399.99. The Pro therefore launched $200 above the disc-drive model and $300 above the digital model.

Sony announced the Pro as a disc-less console with a 2TB SSD and one DualSense controller included. Its PS5 Disc Drive was sold separately, so the Pro’s launch MSRP did not include a disc drive. Sony’s 2024 announcement gives the Pro’s release date, configuration, and price; its 2020 FAQ gives the original PS5 prices: Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement and Sony’s PS5 FAQ.

These examples put the Pro alongside selected earlier console launch prices. They are not a complete history or an apples-to-apples value ranking: models, configurations, and launch years differ.

The PlayStation figures come from Sony announcements for the PS4, PS4 Pro, and PS3. Microsoft announced the original Xbox price and the Xbox Series X and Series S prices.

In nominal U.S. launch prices, $699.99 made the PS5 Pro more expensive at launch than the selected PS4, PS4 Pro, PS3, original Xbox, and Xbox Series examples listed above. That comparison describes sticker prices, not purchasing power: a dollar in 2001 or 2013 did not necessarily represent the same real cost as a dollar in 2024. No inflation-adjusted series is included here.

Launch MSRP also does not establish which console was the better value. The models differ in generation, hardware, storage, and included disc-drive configuration, and a price alone cannot measure performance or ownership cost.
$699.99 was the 2024 launch MSRP, not the later reported price
Keep the date attached to the $699.99 figure: it is Sony’s U.S. launch MSRP for 2024, not a current-price confirmation. On March 27, 2026, the Associated Press reported that the U.S. PS5 Pro price would rise to $899.99 effective in April 2026. That report concerns a later price change; it is not a verified October 2026 retailer listing. Associated Press report on the price change.
