How Private Equity Deals Can Affect a Sports Team’s Finances and Operations

Private equity can supply capital to a team or league, but how it affects operations, debt, control, and future revenue depends on the deal’s structure and league rules.

Private equity can give a team or league cash to address financial needs or fund projects, but the practical effect depends on who receives the money, what rights the investor gets, and what league rules allow. An investment may ease pressure or support operations; it does not by itself guarantee better results or stronger long-term finances.

Where does the investment enter?

“Private equity in sports” can describe different transactions. An investor might buy an interest in an individual team, or invest in a company that controls league-level commercial rights. Those structures can direct money to different places and give the investor different economic and governance rights.

Question Team-level investment League-level commercial-rights investment
What receives the investment? A team or its ownership entity. A company or arrangement tied to league commercial rights, rather than an individual team.
Where can the benefit land? At the team, subject to the agreement’s use-of-proceeds terms. At league level first, with any club allocations governed by the deal.
What may the investor receive? An ownership interest and the rights attached to it under the deal. An economic interest in specified rights or a company managing them.
What determines influence? The investor’s stake, voting and governance terms, and league rules. The rights granted, governance arrangements, and rules governing the competition.

Do not assume that all sports investments work the same way. The contract determines whether cash is intended for debt repayment, operations, facilities, or another purpose, and whether the investor receives an ownership stake, future revenue rights, or both.

What can the money pay for?

Debt and ongoing operations

In a 5 June 2025 announcement, Major League Baseball said Jerry Reinsdorf and Justin Ishbia had agreed to a long-term investment framework for the Chicago White Sox. Ishbia was to make capital infusions as a limited partner in 2025 and 2026 to pay down existing debt and support ongoing team operations. The announcement describes planned uses of capital; it does not establish what later financial or sporting results the investment produced.

Facilities and club projects

Associated Press reporting in February 2024 described CVC’s 2021 La Liga investment as a league-level commercial-rights transaction: CVC held an 8.25% stake in a new company managing league TV rights. Participating clubs received allocations and used them for debt repayment and infrastructure projects, including stadium and training-facility work. This is not the same as buying a stake in each participating team; the arrangement linked an upfront investment to commercial rights managed through a company.

The distinction between a one-time infusion and recurring income matters. Cash available now can meet near-term needs, while rights granted to an investor may carry economic value over time. To assess a deal, a reader needs the use-of-proceeds terms, the duration and scope of any rights, the allocation method, and the obligations attached to the money—not just the headline amount.

Does private equity take control of a team?

Not necessarily. Control depends on the ownership and governance terms, not simply on the presence of an outside investor. The White Sox framework illustrates that distinction: MLB said the Reinsdorf family would continue to control the club and Jerry Reinsdorf would remain its sole day-to-day decision-maker. The announcement described possible future paths to a transfer of control, but said there was no assurance that a future transaction would occur.

A CFA Institute overview characterizes private-equity positions in U.S. sports leagues as typically noncontrolling and subject to restricted voting rights. It also notes that investors may seek exposure to related businesses such as broadcasting, sponsorship, promotion, and merchandise. This is a broad industry description, not a rule for every league, team, or contract; the actual agreement and league approval requirements govern a particular investment.

How can a deal change a team’s financial position?

  • Debt pressure: If proceeds are used to repay existing debt, they can reduce that obligation. The investment is not automatically a loan to the team; the legal form and repayment terms matter.
  • Operating capacity: Capital committed to ongoing operations or facilities can give a club resources for those purposes, subject to the deal’s terms and the club’s ability to carry out its plans.
  • Future commercial income: A league or team may grant an investor an economic interest in specified commercial rights. The upfront cash should therefore be considered alongside the future value and duration of the rights granted.
  • Allocation across clubs: In a league-level deal, teams may not receive equal or direct benefits. The agreement’s allocation rules determine how proceeds reach participating clubs.

These are possible mechanisms, not a promise that an investment will improve profitability or solvency. A capital contribution, a borrowing arrangement, and a sale of commercial rights have different consequences for ownership, repayment, and future income; they should not be treated as interchangeable.

What league rules still constrain spending?

Investment does not remove a club from the financial rules of its competition. The applicable limits differ by league and season.

UEFA competitions

UEFA’s financial-sustainability framework includes quarterly checks for overdue payables to clubs, employees, UEFA, and public authorities; an assessment of football earnings across three monitoring periods; and a squad-cost rule covering player and coach wages, transfer costs, and agent fees. UEFA’s permanent squad-cost threshold is 70% of club revenue from 2025/26. Its phase-in thresholds were 90% in 2023/24 and 80% in 2024/25. These rules apply within UEFA’s framework, not automatically to every sports league.

Premier League

On 21 November 2025, the Premier League said clubs had approved Squad Cost Ratio and Sustainability and Systemic Resilience rules for 2026/27. The planned Squad Cost Ratio caps on-pitch spending at 85% of football revenue and net profit or loss on player sales, with a multi-year allowance and possible levy or sporting sanction. The league said its existing Profitability and Sustainability Rules would remain in place for the rest of 2025/26, so the new system should not be described as already in effect before its stated start date.

Why do some clubs and supporters object?

An upfront payment can address immediate needs, but a deal may also shift some future commercial value or decision-making rights away from clubs. That trade-off can be contentious, especially when clubs disagree about the terms or how proceeds are allocated. In the La Liga arrangement, Real Madrid and Barcelona opposed the deal and were not part of it; some clubs also challenged the arrangement. Those positions reflect stakeholder disputes, not by themselves a finding that the deal was unlawful or financially harmful.

AP quoted Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez calling it “a scourge for Spanish football.” That is his criticism of the arrangement, not a neutral description of its effects. In the same reporting, Mallorca CEO Alfonso Díaz said the club had grown 43% in ticket, sponsorship, and other stadium income and wanted to grow revenue around 83% in the next two or three years. The reported 43% is his attributed account, and the 83% is a forecast; neither establishes that the CVC transaction caused the change or that other clubs will see similar results.

What can—and cannot—be concluded from these examples?

The examples show how deal structure can affect finances and operations: team-level capital may be designated for debt and operating needs, while a league-level commercial-rights investment can provide upfront funds in exchange for an economic interest in rights and allocate proceeds to clubs. Governance terms can preserve existing day-to-day control even when an investment creates a possible later ownership pathway, and league rules continue to limit how clubs manage spending.

These cases do not establish that private equity generally improves wins, profitability, or long-term solvency. A sound assessment of a specific deal needs its legal structure, use-of-proceeds commitments, control rights, revenue rights and duration, allocation method, applicable league rules, and evidence of outcomes after the investment.
