How President Trump’s Policies Could Affect Your Next New-Car Purchase

Tariffs may affect some imported vehicles, the federal New Clean Vehicle Credit is unavailable for post-September 30, 2025 acquisitions, and EPA’s 2026 greenhouse-gas action is distinct from CAFE. Here’s how to compare real offers.

President Trump’s policies could affect what a new car costs, whether a federal electric-vehicle credit is available, and which vehicle requirements apply—but they do not establish a single price change for every buyer. The biggest immediate points are that tariffs apply to defined imported vehicles, the federal New Clean Vehicle Credit ended for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025, and EPA’s 2026 greenhouse-gas action is separate from federal fuel-economy rules.

Could tariffs make your next car more expensive?

Possibly, but the tariff rules do not mean every imported car faces the same rate or that a tariff automatically appears as a matching increase on a dealer’s sticker. A March 26, 2025, White House proclamation set a 25 percent tariff on covered imported automobiles beginning April 3, 2025. The proclamation allows later changes, and subsequent country-specific arrangements affect how the policy applies.

The rate is tied to the import and the rules governing it—not simply to the brand name or the location where a buyer lives. A vehicle assembled outside the United States should not automatically be assumed to have the same tariff treatment as every other imported vehicle; origin requirements and later arrangements matter.

The UK arrangement illustrates the exceptions

Under a 2025 White House implementation order, qualifying UK-origin automobiles within the stated quota receive a combined 10 percent tariff. Imports above the quota remain subject to the fuller duties described in that order. Whether a particular vehicle qualifies depends on origin and quota implementation, so the UK arrangement is not a general rate for all British-branded cars.

Parts offsets are not a promised buyer discount

An April 29, 2025, White House amendment established an offset for certain parts-tariff liability when qualifying parts are used in vehicles assembled in the United States. The stated calculation used 3.75 percent of the aggregate MSRP of a manufacturer’s U.S.-assembled vehicles for the first period and 2.5 percent for the next period. Those percentages describe a manufacturer mechanism subject to conditions; they are not a reduction in a buyer’s price by the same percentage.

Accordingly, U.S. assembly alone does not show that all parts are domestic or that a particular car will receive a specific tariff-related discount. The official actions establish tariff rules and mechanisms, not the retail-price effect for any specific make, model, or trim.

Can you still claim the federal new-car EV tax credit?

For a vehicle acquired after September 30, 2025, the IRS says the federal New Clean Vehicle Credit is unavailable. A new purchase made in 2026 therefore cannot qualify for that credit under the current IRS guidance.

The IRS transition rule treats a vehicle as acquired by the cutoff only if the buyer had a binding written contract and made a payment by September 30, 2025. Someone who met that acquisition test may place the vehicle in service later, subject to the other eligibility requirements. A later delivery by itself does not make a post-cutoff acquisition eligible.

Will emissions and fuel-economy rules change the cars you can buy?

On February 12, 2026, EPA finalized rescission of the 2009 greenhouse-gas Endangerment Finding and associated federal vehicle greenhouse-gas standards. EPA said the action does not affect regulations on traditional air pollutants. It changes the federal greenhouse-gas regulatory framework; it does not itself establish what models automakers will offer or how much any vehicle will cost.

Do not confuse that EPA action with Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. CAFE is administered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration under separate statutory authority. EPA’s greenhouse-gas action is not, by itself, a repeal of CAFE.

EPA estimated that its final rule would produce more than $1.3 trillion in savings. That is the agency’s estimate associated with the rule, not an observed saving or forecast for an individual car buyer.

What does the repair-parts policy mean for owners?

A June 29, 2026, presidential memorandum set out the administration’s policy direction on aftermarket parts and repair. It states: “Consumers should be able to fix their vehicles with affordable parts without being deemed to have circumvented emissions controls.” The memorandum does not establish that every aftermarket part is now lawful, compatible, or available for every vehicle. For a new-car shopper, it is a policy signal about repair rather than a guarantee of lower repair bills.

How to compare cars under changing policies

Because the policy changes do not establish a uniform price effect, compare the specific offers in front of you rather than trying to apply a headline tariff rate to every vehicle. Get current written offers and compare the same trims and purchase terms.

  1. Compare the out-the-door price. Ask for a written total including the vehicle price, fees, taxes, and dealer-installed items. Do not treat a tariff rate or manufacturer offset as a known consumer price change.
  2. Check the vehicle’s origin and exact configuration. For a vehicle whose tariff treatment matters to your decision, ask the manufacturer or dealer for the relevant country-of-origin information and whether a country-specific arrangement or quota applies. Brand headquarters and U.S. assembly location alone do not settle the treatment of a specific vehicle.
  3. Do not build a 2026 budget around the ended federal credit. The federal New Clean Vehicle Credit is unavailable for acquisitions after the IRS cutoff. Evaluate the actual price and financing offer without assuming that credit will reduce the amount you pay.
  4. Compare financing separately from the vehicle price. Review the annual percentage rate, loan term, down payment, and total amount paid across offers. A lower monthly payment can result from a longer loan rather than a lower total cost.
  5. Recheck any policy-specific claim before signing. Tariff arrangements and implementation can vary; ask for the terms that apply to the particular vehicle and offer on the date you buy.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
