PosiGen’s Connecticut model tried to make rooftop solar accessible to low- and moderate-income homeowners by combining a lease, energy-efficiency work, fixed monthly pricing and underwriting that did not rely on conventional income or credit-score thresholds. Independent research found it reached more lower-income communities than other Connecticut Green Bank solar programs, while also reporting higher delinquency and loss rates in unadjusted comparisons. PosiGen later entered Chapter 11, and court filings describe a transition of customer servicing and a proposed sale process. The model is worth understanding—but its history is not proof that the same offer or service is available today.
What PosiGen’s solar model was designed to change
Traditional residential solar often requires a homeowner to buy a system or qualify for financing. PosiGen’s historical Connecticut program took a different route: it leased rooftop systems to low- and moderate-income homeowners and paired solar with energy-efficiency measures. Connecticut Green Bank says its Solar for All program launched in 2015, used standardized system sizing and fixed monthly pricing, and was designed to make participation possible regardless of household income or credit score through alternative underwriting. The distinction matters. A lease is not the same as owning a solar system. Under the Connecticut arrangement described by the Green Bank, PosiGen and its financial partners owned the leased equipment and used federal tax-credit value, alongside a Green Bank incentive for low- and moderate-income households, to support affordable, predictable customer pricing. The customer did not own the system or retain its tax-credit value under that arrangement.
That design shifted the financing and ownership role to the provider and its partners. It also bundled efficiency work with solar, rather than treating household energy use as a matter of panel installation alone. The available account describes the Connecticut program; it does not establish that terms in other states or at other times were identical.

What the independent evaluation found
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s 2021 evaluation of the Connecticut Green Bank–PosiGen leasing program found that its reach into lower-income communities was substantially different from that of the Green Bank’s other solar financing programs. The study also found weaker repayment outcomes in unadjusted comparisons, so reach and financial performance should be considered together—not presented as competing versions of the same finding.

These figures describe the Connecticut programs and study period, not an individual household’s likely experience or current PosiGen performance. After accounting for participant characteristics such as credit score, Berkeley Lab found PosiGen leases were 1.7% less likely to be 30 or more days delinquent and 2.6% more likely to terminate early than the other Green Bank loans and leases. How the historical lease differs from buying a system
The available evidence supports a comparison of the Connecticut lease model with direct system ownership at a high level. It does not provide a current, like-for-like comparison of PosiGen with named providers or other financing products.

What Chapter 11 changed—and what the filings do not prove
PosiGen’s later bankruptcy means the Connecticut program’s original operating model should not be assumed to continue unchanged. A motion filed in the Southern District of Texas on December 24, 2025 sought procedures to transition servicing, operations, maintenance, fund administration and customer care for most customers to a third party. It also proposed a process to sell substantially all business assets. The motion records what the debtors requested at that time; by itself, it does not prove that every proposed transfer or sale closed as described. Chapter 11 Document 310, filed December 24, 2025
A February 24, 2026 filing says Backleverage engaged Omnidian to take over servicing and describes PosiGen’s effort to continue customer servicing during a difficult transition. The same filing says PosiGen terminated approximately 470 employees on August 24, 2025, describing that number as more than 70% of its workforce. For a homeowner considering a new solar offer, verify the actual contract rather than relying on the historical Solar for All description or current website language. Compare who owns the panels, who receives tax-credit value, the full payment schedule, whether efficiency work is included, what savings are guaranteed (if any), and who is responsible for service and billing.
For an existing PosiGen customer, use recent authenticated servicing notices and contract documents to confirm who now handles billing, maintenance, warranty requests and account questions. Do not assume that a company location page or older contact details reflect the current arrangement. If the answer affects a payment or legal obligation, verify it through the current servicing notice or the official bankruptcy docket rather than relying on a secondary case summary.
So, is PosiGen rewriting the solar energy script?
Historically, it offered a different financing and access model: a lease rather than customer ownership, bundled efficiency work, fixed monthly pricing, and alternative underwriting intended to open solar to households often left out by conventional qualification. Berkeley Lab’s evaluation supports the claim that the Connecticut program reached lower-income communities, while also documenting higher unadjusted delinquency and loss rates than other Green Bank programs. The Chapter 11 transition is an essential part of the account: PosiGen’s former model is a meaningful case study, but it cannot be treated as a verified description of what every customer can buy or who will service every system today.
