Period-proof swimwear became a sales bright spot for Daneechi Swimwear during a difficult year, after customers called looking for an option they could buy in person. In December 2024, owner Gemma Dunthorne told PerthNow that the line had sold more than 1,000 pieces since launch. But that success did not save the business: PerthNow reported in June 2026 that Daneechi planned to close after Dunthorne could not find a buyer.
Why Daneechi made period-proof swimwear
Daneechi, a swimwear business in West Leederville, was facing a year without growth after earlier growth, including during COVID-19. Dunthorne described leisure swimwear as a discretionary purchase that households might put off under cost-of-living pressure: “Leisure swimwear is more of a luxury item, and so I think people are less inclined to buy these things unless they need it.” Her comments, reported by PerthNow on 26 December 2024, are an account of the owner’s experience, not audited financial results.
The idea for the line came from customer demand. Dunthorne said the store was receiving frequent calls from people seeking period-proof swimwear, often mothers looking for something for teenage daughters who needed it urgently and could not wait for online delivery. The store could not source other brands, so it decided to make its own. A Town of Cambridge profile published in September 2023 describes a similar origin and notes that some customers were reluctant to buy the products online.
What the launch range included
The Town of Cambridge profile describes the garments as having an extra-absorbent gusset, a waterproof layer and silicone around the legs. It says the launch collection comprised one one-piece swimsuit and five bikini-bottom styles, in sizes 6–20. Those details were reported in a municipal profile drawing on the owner; they are not results from independent performance testing.

Dunthorne also acknowledged that fit mattered as much as the underlying technology: “The technology works, we knew that, but we also knew that some of the other products on the market suffered bad reviews due to the fit.” The available reporting does not establish a standardized absorbency rating or comparative leak-performance results, so it cannot support a claim that the garments are leakproof or outperform other brands.
Sales were strong, but the figure came from the owner
In December 2024, Dunthorne told PerthNow that Daneechi had sold well over 1,000 pieces since launching the range around a year earlier, and was making multiple sales on summer days. “We’ve sold well over 1000 now, and we only launched it just over 12 months ago . . . and I think that’s just scraping the surface,” she said. The sales figure is her reported number, not an independently audited count.

The account shows how a focused product can answer a specific customer need even when shoppers are cautious about discretionary spending. It does not show that the line made Daneechi profitable, offset its broader costs or caused any later business outcome.
Daneechi’s later closure plans change the story
On 2 June 2026, PerthNow reported that Daneechi would close after Dunthorne was unable to sell the business. The report said prospective buyers had initially shown interest but withdrew amid rising costs and weaker consumer spending. Dunthorne said she hoped someone might later acquire the trademark and intellectual property, and noted that the business had a manufacturing arm.

The report establishes an announced intention to close, not confirmation that the closure was completed or that the trademark or intellectual property was sold. Wider economic figures should not be mistaken for evidence about Daneechi’s own finances: CCIWA reported that 80% of consumers said living costs were weighing on confidence in its June 2026 Consumer Confidence Survey, and that Perth’s annual CPI inflation was 4.9% in its February 2026 Inflation Update. Those measures describe broader conditions, not the cause of Daneechi’s performance or closure.

- Style and coverage: decide whether a one-piece or a bikini bottom better suits the activity and preferred coverage.
- Fit and sizing: check the retailer’s size guide and garment-specific fit information.
- Construction: look for clear details about the gusset and other layers, rather than assuming all products use the same design.
- Price and availability: confirm the current price, stock and delivery timing before relying on a product for a particular date.
- Returns: read the retailer’s policy, especially for swimwear and hygiene-sensitive products.
The available sources do not provide comparable test results that would justify ranking brands by absorbency or leak protection.
