Many UK defined contribution pensions gradually shift their investments toward bonds and cash as a member’s expected retirement date gets closer. That can reduce exposure to market falls just before the member plans to use the money, but it may also limit growth—and it can be a poor fit if the strategy assumes the member will take cash or buy an annuity when they actually plan to keep the pot invested in drawdown.
What changes in a defined contribution pension?
A defined contribution (DC) pension is an invested pot. Contributions are invested by the provider, and the pot’s value can rise or fall with investment performance. As GOV.UK puts it, “The value of your pension pot can go up or down depending on how the investments perform.” GOV.UK: Types of private pensions

Many schemes’ default investment strategies change the mix of assets over time. When a member is younger, a default may hold more investments intended to grow over the long term. As the selected retirement date approaches, it may gradually reduce exposure to those assets and increase holdings such as government bonds and cash. MoneyHelper describes this as taking fewer risks closer to the expected retirement date, when there is less time to recover from losses before the saver expects to access the money. The Pensions Regulator said in a 2023 statement that strategies commonly increased their allocation to bonds as savers approached their expected retirement date, and that the shift might begin five to fifteen years beforehand. That is a description of practice discussed in that statement, not a universal timetable or a current recommendation for an individual saver. The Pensions Regulator: Supporting DC savers in the current economic climate
Why does a pension default become less exposed to growth investments?
The design is intended to manage the risk of a sharp fall shortly before the saver expects to use the pot. If a member plans to take a large amount at a particular date, a market loss immediately beforehand could reduce the amount available for that transaction. Moving toward assets the scheme regards as more stable can reduce some exposure to that kind of late-stage market movement.

“Lower risk” does not mean risk-free, and a shift does not guarantee that the pot will hold its value or deliver a particular income. It also involves a trade-off: reducing exposure to growth investments can reduce the potential for investment growth. The balance a default chooses reflects assumptions about the member’s timing and intended use of the money, not simply their age.

Why the way you plan to use the pot matters
A strategy can be sensible for one retirement plan and mismatched to another. Historically, many lifestyle strategies were designed to reach an investment mix just before the nominated date that suited taking tax-free cash and buying an annuity. After the 2015 pension reforms, fewer people chose annuities. The Financial Conduct Authority’s review therefore highlighted the risk that some profiles could be inappropriate for members with different plans, and the importance of explaining how a strategy relates to available retirement options. The FCA labels that review historical and its page includes an August 2025 update. FCA: Pension lifestyle investment strategies – findings
Someone planning to leave some or all of their pension invested after retirement has a different investment horizon from someone expecting to use most of it at once. A strategy that moves toward cash or assets chosen to match an annuity purchase may not automatically suit a pot intended to remain invested and support withdrawals over time. That does not mean a drawdown investor should necessarily stay in a growth-oriented fund: the appropriate balance depends on their circumstances, plans and ability to manage investment and income risks.

The Pensions Regulator says schemes should consider the years before benefits are taken in light of how members may access them—as cash, through income drawdown, by buying an annuity, or by combining approaches. It also notes that investment structures can differ in risk, cost, flexibility, included services and how efficiently the strategy transitions. Compare those features in current scheme documents rather than assuming that two funds with similar names work alike. The Pensions Regulator: Investment governance in DC schemes
How retirement options change the investment question
Investment strategy and the decision about what to do with a pension pot are related, but they are not the same decision. GOV.UK lists several ways to use a personal pension: take some or all as cash, buy an annuity, or use flexi-access drawdown to make adjustable withdrawals. A provider may not offer every option, so members need to check what their own scheme makes available. GOV.UK: How you can take your pension

| Route | What happens to the money | Investment and income consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Cash | You take some or all of the pension as cash, subject to the options available and applicable rules. | A large withdrawal can leave less money invested for future needs. Consider how much income may be needed over time before deciding what to take. |
| Annuity | You exchange pension savings for regular income for life. | An annuity can provide guaranteed income for life. A strategy designed to prepare for an annuity may have a different destination from one intended to remain invested. |
| Flexi-access drawdown | You leave money invested and take adjustable withdrawals. | The pot remains exposed to investment performance while withdrawals are made. Its value and the income it can support depend on returns, withdrawals and how long the money is needed. |
| Combination | You use more than one route, for example taking some cash and using the rest for an annuity or drawdown. | The investment destination can differ for each portion, so check whether the strategy’s target matches how each part is intended to be used. |
Cash, drawdown and guaranteed lifetime income offer different kinds of access and security. The decision involves more than the fund’s risk label: it includes the level of income certainty desired, how much flexibility matters, and the possibility of needing income for many years. With drawdown, withdrawals reduce the remaining pot, and investment performance continues to affect it. The Department for Work and Pensions describes decisions about investment approach, withdrawal sequencing and managing income over time as highly complex. DWP: Pension Schemes Act 2026 – Guided Retirement guiding principles
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check whether your strategy matches your plans
Before changing a fund or accepting a default date, find out what your current strategy is designed to do. Your provider’s annual statement, online pension account or investment guide may identify the selected retirement date and how the investment mix changes, but the provider can confirm how the scheme applies those settings to your pot.
- Find the target date. Ask what retirement date the current strategy is targeting and whether it uses a date you selected or the scheme’s normal pension age. Ask how to check or change it. A date that is too early or too late can put the strategy’s changes out of step with your plans.
- Ask when the investment changes begin. Find out when the strategy starts changing its asset mix, what it moves into, and what the intended final allocation is. Do not assume that your scheme follows the five-to-fifteen-year pattern described by the Pensions Regulator in 2023; individual glide paths vary.
- Identify the intended destination. Ask whether the strategy is designed around taking cash, buying an annuity, drawdown, or another route. If it assumes a particular transaction, ask what happens if you do not plan to make it.
- Describe your likely timing and use of the pot. Tell the provider if you expect to retire earlier or later than the target, take only part of the pot, or leave some savings invested. Ask whether the strategy continues to fit those plans and what other investment options the scheme provides.
- Compare charges and services. Request current information about charges, the available investment options and any services included. Consider flexibility and how the strategy transitions as well as the stated risk level; provider documents are needed for a scheme-specific comparison.
- Get help if the decision is unclear. Retirement investment and income choices can have long-lasting consequences. The Pensions Regulator’s guidance refers members to government guidance in specified circumstances and recommends considering independent advice. Use impartial guidance to understand options; seek regulated, independent advice if you need a personalised recommendation. The Pensions Regulator: Retirement risk warnings and guidance
What not to infer from the default
- A lower-risk shift is not proof that your current fund is wrong. It may be appropriate for the plan the scheme assumes. First establish the target date, intended destination and your own likely use of the pot.
- A plan to use drawdown does not automatically mean you should keep a growth-heavy allocation. Drawdown leaves investments exposed to performance while withdrawals are made, but the right level of risk is personal and cannot be determined from the retirement route alone.
- A retirement date is not necessarily a withdrawal instruction. A target date helps drive the investment path; it does not by itself decide when you stop working or which option you must choose.
- A scheme default is not a personalised assessment. The strategy may use standard assumptions when it does not know your specific plans. Checking those assumptions is more useful than judging the fund by age alone.
Why checking matters even if you have not made a plan
Many members may not know how their pension is invested. In its 2026 guiding-principles paper, the DWP reported Financial Conduct Authority Financial Lives 2024 survey findings that 52% of adults contributing to a DC pension at that time had low or very low levels of pension engagement, and 31% were unaware their pension pot was invested. Those figures describe that survey population, not all UK adults or all pension savers. DWP: Pension Schemes Act 2026 – Guided Retirement guiding principles
You do not need to settle every retirement-income question before checking a default. Start by learning the date and destination it assumes, then ask what choices are available if your plans change. If you have several pensions, remember that each scheme may have its own strategy and target date; review the provider information for each pot rather than assuming one fund’s path describes them all.
For a scheme-specific answer, current provider documents matter: public guidance explains common designs and the questions to ask, but does not establish the allocation, glide path or charges of an individual pension. Treat any proposed switch as a personal financial decision, not an automatic response to getting older.
