PayPal’s mobile app can collect delivery updates for purchases made with PayPal or another payment method. Automatic tracking requires linking the Gmail or Outlook inbox that receives your order emails; you can also add a shipment manually with its carrier and tracking number. The feature is available only in the app, and it can track a package only when usable tracking information is available.
What PayPal Package tracking does
Package tracking is a shipment dashboard in the PayPal app, not a record of every purchase you make. It brings detected or manually entered shipments into one list and displays carrier updates and estimated arrival information. PayPal says the feature is powered by AfterShip and supports UPS, FedEx, DHL, USPS, and more than 800 other carriers worldwide, including Deutsche Post, Yamato Transport, SF Express, and Royal Mail. PayPal’s labels translate carrier information into a small set of statuses. They are summaries, not a promise that the app knows the package’s precise physical location.
- Prepping: The seller has created a shipping label; that alone does not establish that the carrier has received the parcel.
- Shipped: The carrier has the package.
- Out for delivery: The carrier indicates that delivery is likely that day.
- Delivered: The carrier has reported delivery. If you cannot find the parcel, check the carrier’s delivery details rather than treating this label as proof you personally received it.
- Waiting for info: PayPal does not yet have an estimated arrival update.
- Check carrier for update: PayPal recommends checking the carrier’s own tracking page, often because there may be a delay or issue.
PayPal publicly launched the feature on October 17, 2023. Launch coverage described a live-map view, but PayPal’s current help pages emphasize tracking updates and notifications and do not promise that every account has a map. TechCrunch’s launch report

How PayPal finds orders that did not use PayPal
For automatic tracking, PayPal looks for relevant shopping, order, and shipping information in a Gmail or Outlook account you connect. It uses that information to identify shipments, then displays subsequent carrier updates. In other words, an imported shipment is not a purchase record from a retailer checkout that PayPal handled: the discovery route is the connected inbox. To connect an inbox, open the PayPal app and look for Package tracking in the Home-screen menu or the tile near the top of Activity. If no email account is linked, PayPal says a banner may offer automatic tracking. Choose Gmail or Outlook and follow the provider’s authorization prompts. Use the inbox where your order confirmations actually arrive; a different address, or a seller that does not send recognizable tracking details there, can leave orders out of the list.
How to add a shipment manually
- Open Package tracking in the PayPal app.
- Choose the option to add or track a package manually.
- Enter the tracking number and select or enter the carrier.
- Save the shipment. Add a nickname if you want an easier label; otherwise PayPal may identify it using the carrier and tracking number.
Manual entry is useful if you do not want to link an inbox or automatic detection misses an order. Check the list first so you do not add a shipment that has already been detected. PayPal can show updates when the carrier supports the shipment. PayPal’s package troubleshooting instructions
Availability and the limits of tracking
PayPal’s help page lists the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom as countries where Package tracking is available, and says it is rolling out to Australia and Canada. This is PayPal’s listed availability, not a guarantee that the feature has reached every account in those markets. Availability can also depend on the account and app version. More than 800 supported carriers is broad coverage, not universal visibility. PayPal needs a usable tracking number and carrier information; it says some packages from sellers such as Amazon and Walmart may not appear when those sellers do not provide a tracking number for a particular shipment. Untracked mail, incomplete marketplace notifications, and an email sent to an unlinked address can also prevent automatic detection. For orders split into several parcels, compare the shipment list with the retailer’s order page to confirm that each tracking number is represented.
International parcels can pass from one carrier to another after customs or a domestic handoff. PayPal says it can update details when a shipment transfers to a domestic carrier, but that depends on the available carrier data and tracking number. The carrier’s own page is the better place to check a handoff, delayed scan, delivery attempt, or proof of delivery.
PayPal’s current help documentation describes app-based tracking and does not list a desktop tracking interface. If the feature is missing, update the app, check both the Home menu and Activity, and confirm that you are using the PayPal service for a supported country. PayPal notes that it may not yet be available to every user. Manual tracking or the carrier’s website are alternatives; reinstalling the app is not a guaranteed fix for rollout or account availability.

What linking Gmail or Outlook means for privacy
Connecting an inbox is the key trade-off of automatic tracking. PayPal describes using provider APIs to find shopping, order, shipping, and product details. Its help pages say Google API data is subject to Google’s API Services User Data Policy and Limited Use requirements, and that relevant Microsoft data is subject to Microsoft’s API terms. PayPal says Google and Microsoft data used for package tracking is not used for advertising or shared with advertising platforms or data brokers for ad serving. Those statements do not replace the permission screen shown by Google or Microsoft during setup. Review the permissions presented there before authorizing access; the exact scope is determined by the provider’s current consent flow. PayPal’s description does not establish that the feature reads every message, so avoid assuming either that it does or that an authorization grants no broader access than the screen specifies.
- Link only the email account where shopping confirmations arrive; avoid a shared family or work inbox if you do not want other people’s deliveries surfaced.
- Read the Gmail or Outlook authorization screen before approving access.
- If you do not want inbox-based detection, do not connect the account; use manual tracking instead.
- When finished or changing accounts, use PayPal’s package-tracking settings or the email connection controls shown in the app to turn off automatic tracking or unlink the account. Labels and paths may vary by app version.
- Keep PayPal delivery notifications enabled only if you find the alerts useful.

- Open the package in PayPal. Look for shipment details from the app’s Me tab, then Activity, or tap the package from the tracking list. App labels can vary.
- Check that the tracking number and carrier match the retailer’s order details.
- Tap the tracking number to open the carrier’s page and compare its latest scan with PayPal’s status. For a marked-delivered parcel, check any available delivery location or proof-of-delivery details.
- Contact the carrier about movement, delays, delivery attempts, or proof of delivery.
- Contact the retailer or seller about a missing, damaged, incorrect, or incomplete order, and ask about a replacement or refund.
- Use PayPal’s dispute or Purchase Protection process only if the payment and issue qualify under the applicable rules. Importing a non-PayPal shipment does not make its purchase eligible for PayPal protection.
When PayPal is the right tracking tool
PayPal is most useful when you order from several retailers and want a single list without entering every tracking number. Automatic discovery can reduce manual work, while manual entry offers an option without inbox linking. The trade-offs are app-only access, possible gaps or delays in the underlying data, and the privacy decision involved in connecting an email account.
If you know the carrier and need to manage delivery rather than simply view status, use the carrier’s own service: USPS Informed Delivery, UPS My Choice, FedEx Delivery Manager, or DHL tracking. Carrier tools may offer carrier-specific delivery information or controls; they are less convenient when you want one dashboard across several carriers.

For a personal shipment that is missing from PayPal, start with the retailer’s order page or add the tracking number manually, then verify updates with the carrier. PayPal identifies AfterShip as the technology provider behind its feature, but its own dashboard is the consumer-facing option described here; AfterShip’s direct products are aimed at merchant tracking workflows rather than a shopper duplicating personal package tracking.
