How Old Do You Have to Be to Start Dropshipping? 7 Steps for Under-18 Sellers

Dropshipping has no single worldwide minimum age. Your local rules and the age and account terms of your ecommerce and payment providers determine what you can do, and whether a parent or guardian must hold an account.

There is no single worldwide minimum age for starting a dropshipping business. The rules that matter depend on where you operate and the age requirements of the ecommerce platform and payment providers you use. If you are under 18, the key question is often whether an adult must own or represent the accounts that let you accept payments and receive payouts.

Can you start dropshipping if you are under 18?

Possibly, but being able to create a store is not the same as being eligible to open the payment accounts it needs. Platform and payment-provider terms are separate from local laws about business ownership, registration, taxes, and contracts. Check both before you begin.

Shopify describes dropshipping as selling products without holding inventory, with a third-party supplier shipping orders to customers. The supplier handles fulfillment, but that does not remove the seller’s obligations to customers or regulators. Shopify’s terms and its dropshipping guidance address the merchant’s responsibilities, including product safety and required warnings or documentation.

Age rules for Shopify Payments, Stripe, and PayPal

These providers do not all set the same age threshold or guardian role. The rules below are provider-account requirements, not a universal minimum age to own a business.

Provider and scope Age rule in the cited guidance Guardian role
Shopify Payments The account holder must be at least 18. Shopify’s eligibility guidance specifies a parent or guardian account representative when the applicant is under 18. A parent or guardian sets up the account with their own details and acts as account representative. See Shopify Payments eligibility.
Stripe Account creation is allowed from age 13 in many places, but an under-18 user cannot accept charges or receive transfers until a legal guardian becomes the account owner. Brazil requires account holders to be at least 18. A legal guardian must assume account ownership before the minor can accept payments or receive transfers. See Stripe’s age requirement guidance.
PayPal (U.S. agreement) An individual must be 18 or the age of majority in their state, whichever applies under the agreement. The cited U.S. agreement does not establish an underage guardian-account path. Check the current agreement for your location: PayPal User Agreement.

Terms can vary by country and change over time. Read the current rules for the country where the account will be opened, and check what identity and business information the provider requires before accepting charges or receiving payouts. Do not use an adult’s details without their knowledge or treat a guardian’s participation as a way around the provider’s terms.

Seven steps to take before opening a dropshipping store

  1. Identify the relevant jurisdictions. Write down where you live and operate, and where your customers will be. Business, consumer, tax, and product rules can differ across locations.
  2. Check platform and payment terms separately. Confirm the age rules for the ecommerce platform and every payment service. A store account and a payment account may have different eligibility requirements.
  3. Involve a parent or guardian when required. If a provider requires an adult owner or representative, agree on the arrangement openly and use the adult’s actual information in the role the provider specifies.
  4. Investigate registration and taxes. Ask the relevant government or a local business resource whether you need business registration, a tax identification number, or to collect and remit sales tax or VAT. Shopify’s finance guidance recommends checking local requirements.
  5. Check product compliance before listing items. Find out whether the product needs a license or certification and what safety warnings, instructions, or documentation are required in each market. Shopify notes that merchants remain responsible for product safety even when a supplier ships the item.
  6. Keep clean financial records. Separate business income and expenses from personal funds, and keep records of transactions and costs. Shopify recommends separating personal and business finances in its finance guidance.
  7. Remember who is accountable to the customer. Treat the supplier as a fulfillment partner, not as a replacement for your responsibilities as the seller. Confirm how you will handle customer questions and any obligations that apply to the products you sell.

What an adult account holder should understand

If a parent or guardian opens or owns an account, they are taking on the role specified by that provider—not merely lending a name. Before proceeding, agree on who will control the account, review identity and business checks, oversee payouts, keep records, and respond to account or customer issues. Follow the provider’s stated arrangement rather than sharing inaccurate information.

What the age rules do—and do not—tell you

A provider’s minimum age tells you who may hold or operate that provider account under its terms. It does not, by itself, answer whether a minor may own a business in a particular jurisdiction, what registrations or taxes apply, or whether a product may legally be sold in a target market. Shopify cautions that its dropshipping information is general guidance, not legal advice; for a decision about your circumstances, check the relevant government rules or consult a qualified local professional.
