For a long-term investor, separate checking your account from deciding whether to trade. Review statements regularly for unauthorized transactions, fees and progress. Review your asset allocation about every six to 12 months as a practical starting point, or use a pre-set allocation threshold that prompts a review. A review is not an instruction to buy or sell, and daily market moves rarely justify changing a long-term plan.
This is general educational information for U.S. investors, not individualized investment advice. No regulator sets one mandatory checking schedule for every investor.

The short answer: use different schedules for different jobs
“Checking your portfolio” can mean two separate activities. Administrative monitoring protects the account itself. Investment-plan monitoring asks whether your mix of assets still fits your goals, time horizon, financial situation and risk tolerance. Those activities should not happen at the same frequency.
- Account and security check: Read account statements and transaction notices regularly. Look for unauthorized activity, unfamiliar charges, changing fees and whether contributions or withdrawals were recorded correctly.
- Allocation and plan review: Examine your target mix about every six or 12 months, or when a pre-set percentage band is crossed. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) describes both as reasonable approaches, not universal rules.
- Trading decision: Rebalance only if your written plan calls for it and the benefits outweigh taxes, transaction costs and other consequences.
An SEC-hosted investing guide warns that looking at stock quotations every day is probably too often for some people, while looking only once a year may not be often enough. The appropriate interval depends on your goals and investments.

What to check when your statement arrives
Statement review is an operational safeguard, not a market-timing exercise. Use each statement or account notice as an opportunity to confirm that the account is functioning as expected.
Verify transactions and cash
Check deposits, withdrawals, dividend payments, interest, transfers and trades against your own records. An unfamiliar transaction should be investigated promptly through the institution’s official contact channel. Do not assume a small amount is harmless; unauthorized activity can signal a broader account-security problem.
Look for fees and changes
Identify advisory charges, fund expenses, account maintenance fees, trading commissions, transfer fees and other deductions shown on the statement. Compare them with the terms you agreed to. A fee that changed, appeared unexpectedly or is difficult to explain deserves a question before you make an investment decision.

Confirm progress without demanding a monthly verdict
Record contributions, withdrawals and the account balance so you can distinguish your own cash flows from investment performance. A balance that fell after a withdrawal is not the same as a loss caused by market movement. Likewise, a short-term gain does not prove that a strategy is working permanently.

When to review asset allocation
Investor.gov says many financial experts recommend considering rebalancing at regular intervals such as every six or 12 months. Its older-investor guidance also presents a six-to-12-month allocation review. These are practical starting points, not findings from a performance study and not a required schedule.
You can choose a calendar method, a threshold method or a combination:
| Method | How it works | Main advantage | Trade-offs to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calendar-based | Review on a recurring date, such as every six or 12 months. | Predictable and easy to put on a calendar. | You may review when the portfolio has barely drifted, and you may wait for the date after a large move. |
| Threshold-based | Set an allocation band in advance and review when an asset category moves outside it. | The portfolio itself signals when attention may be needed. | You must monitor the percentages and decide how much trading, if any, is justified. The SEC does not prescribe one universal threshold. |
| Combined | Use a scheduled review while also responding to a pre-set band breach. | Provides a regular backstop without ignoring substantial drift. | More monitoring can create more opportunities to trade, so costs and taxes still need review. |
Neither approach is established by the SEC as superior for every investor. The useful choice is the one you can follow consistently without turning ordinary volatility into constant activity.

A step-by-step portfolio review
- Write down the purpose of the review. Decide whether you are checking security and fees, measuring progress, testing your plan against a life change, or assessing allocation drift. Do not begin by asking whether yesterday’s market move requires a trade.
- Gather the same information each time. Use current statements, holdings, contributions, withdrawals, fees and the target allocation in your investment plan. Consistent inputs make one review comparable with the next.
- Check for unauthorized activity. Confirm every transaction and contact the institution promptly about anything you do not recognize.
- Measure allocation, not just account value. Calculate the percentage in each major asset category and compare it with your target. A rising account balance can conceal a riskier mix if one category grew faster than the others.
- Ask whether your circumstances changed. Reconsider the plan if your time horizon, risk tolerance, financial situation or goals have changed. A market decline alone does not establish that the plan is wrong.
- Compare performance fairly. The SEC-hosted Saving and Investing guide recommends comparing results with an index of similar investments over the same period and considering how much risk you took. Do not compare a conservative holding with a riskier index and treat the difference as manager skill.
- Choose an action only after the diagnosis. You might leave the portfolio alone, update a target because your circumstances changed, direct new contributions toward an underweighted category, or rebalance by selling and buying. Document why you chose the action.
- Record the next review date or trigger. A written calendar date or threshold prevents headlines from becoming your de facto investment policy.
When to look sooner than your normal schedule
A six-to-12-month review interval is not a reason to ignore a material change. Review the plan sooner when one of these events occurs:

- Your retirement date, education funding date or another major spending deadline moves closer or farther away.
- Your income, emergency reserves, debt, family obligations or other parts of your financial situation change enough to alter how much loss you can tolerate.
- Your risk tolerance changes. If a normal decline would now make you abandon the plan, the plan may no longer fit you.
- Your investment objective changes, such as moving from accumulation to withdrawals.
- An asset category crosses the allocation band you set in advance.
- A fund, account or adviser changes fees, strategy, restrictions or ownership terms in a way you do not understand.
- You detect an unauthorized transaction or an account-security problem.
These triggers call for a deliberate review. They do not automatically call for an immediate sale.
Rebalancing does not mean trading every time holdings move
Rebalancing restores the allocation in your plan after market movements or cash flows have changed it. It is different from trying to predict which asset will rise next.
Use new contributions first when appropriate
Investor.gov identifies directing new money toward an underweighted asset category as one way to rebalance. This can reduce the need to sell an overweighted holding. It may not remove every tax or cost issue, and it has to fit the investments available in your account.
Sell and buy only after checking consequences
Selling an overweighted asset can create transaction fees and, in a taxable account, tax consequences. Review the expected cost, any holding-period or distribution issue that applies, and whether a less disruptive contribution change can move the portfolio toward its target.

Keep the frequency deliberately low
Investor.gov says rebalancing tends to work best when done relatively infrequently. Frequent trades can turn a maintenance rule into a reaction to noise. A threshold is a prompt to evaluate, not an order that every small crossing must be traded immediately.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to judge performance without overreacting
Short periods can be dominated by market conditions that say little about whether your plan is suitable. Start with the time period that matches the goal and compare like with like. Include contributions and withdrawals in your calculation, and compare a holding with a similar-risk benchmark over the same period.
Do not let a temporary decline force a drastic change without considering your long-term goals. The SEC-hosted guide specifically cautions against getting caught up in daily price moves and selling after a temporary decline. A portfolio review should test whether the original assumptions still apply, not reward whichever asset performed best last week.

Target-date funds
Investor.gov notes that a target-date fund’s adviser typically handles asset-allocation rebalancing over time. You still need to monitor the account, confirm that the target date matches the goal and check that the fund’s approach remains suitable for your circumstances. The automatic feature does not eliminate statement, fee or security checks.

Working with an investment professional
If someone monitors your account, ask how often they review it, what events trigger contact, what the service includes and what limitations apply. Monitoring frequency is not the same as a promise of better returns. You remain responsible for understanding the strategy, costs and authorization for any trades.
An example of a low-noise routine
The following is an illustration of how to separate tasks; it is not a regulator-mandated timetable:
| Timing | Task | Decision made |
|---|---|---|
| When each statement or alert arrives | Check transactions, cash movements, fees and security notifications. | Report discrepancies; normally do not change allocation because of a single market move. |
| Every six months | Measure allocation, review goals and risk tolerance, and compare performance with an appropriate benchmark. | Leave the plan, adjust contributions, or investigate whether rebalancing is warranted. |
| Every 12 months if that suits your plan | Conduct a fuller review of objectives, costs, tax considerations and beneficiary or account details. | Update the written plan only when circumstances or evidence justify it. |
| Whenever a pre-set band is crossed or a major life change occurs | Run the same allocation and suitability checks outside the calendar. | Consider, but do not automatically execute, a rebalance or plan change. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing visibility with control: Opening an app repeatedly cannot make markets more predictable.
- Trading because a headline is frightening: A news event is not the same as a change in your goals, time horizon or risk capacity.
- Using an arbitrary threshold: Choose a band you can explain in your written plan rather than copying a number without understanding its purpose.
- Ignoring taxes and fees: The cost of correcting a small drift can exceed the benefit, especially when contributions can address part of the imbalance.
- Comparing unlike investments: A return comparison is meaningful only when the period, investment type and risk are reasonably comparable.
- Assuming automation removes responsibility: Even an automatically rebalancing fund requires statement, fee and suitability checks.
- Waiting for a perfect signal: A review can end with no transaction. Deciding not to trade is an active result when the plan still fits.
Bottom line
Check account statements regularly for unauthorized activity, fees and recording errors. Review your allocation and investment plan about every six to 12 months, or when a pre-set threshold or major life change prompts you to look sooner. Treat rebalancing as a controlled maintenance decision: compare like with like, account for taxes and transaction costs, and remember that reviewing the portfolio does not obligate you to trade.
