Noranda couple Nat Grosch and Lilly Macer launched Pieces of Them in May 2023 after struggling to find chunky, gender-neutral jewellery that suited their taste. They set out to create streetwear-influenced designs they felt could be worn across genders and marketed to women. In PerthNow’s January 2024 account, the founders described running the business from home and selling exclusively online.
Why Grosch and Macer started the brand
The founders said they were drawn to oversized, chunky jewellery but had trouble finding gender-neutral styles they liked. In an interview published by PerthNow on January 25, 2024, Grosch put it this way: “We really love big chunky designs and pieces that can be very unisex type styles.”
A July 2024 interview with Onya Magazine described the gap they saw as chunky, streetwear-style jewellery that was gender-neutral but not being made or marketed to women. The accounts frame Pieces of Them as a response to that personal design and market frustration, rather than as a business built around a documented market-size study.
Design influences and production
Grosch named streetwear, tattoos, music and the ocean as influences on the designs. The founders said they found a jewellery manufacturer in Bali and worked through consultation and wax-model adjustments before production. Onya Magazine described the pieces as handcrafted in Bali; those production and sourcing details are the founders’ account, not an independent assessment.
The two reports use different descriptions of the materials. PerthNow said pieces were made from either 925 sterling silver or 14-carat gold, while Onya Magazine described 925 sterling silver and 14-carat gold vermeil. These are source-specific descriptions, not a single independently verified specification for every item.
What was reported about the home business
PerthNow’s January 2024 profile placed the business at the founders’ Noranda home and said it sold exclusively online at that time. Grosch told the publication that the business produced 20–30 pieces per season, with prices of about A$120–A$400 and seasonal sales of A$3,000–A$5,000. Those are launch-era figures attributed to Grosch, not audited accounts or current prices and sales.
