Those mechanics can produce tradable assets, but they do not guarantee income or a positive return. Axie Infinity’s changing reward designs show why it matters to distinguish game rewards from proof-of-stake validator rewards—and to check the current rules, costs and lockups before participating.
What “yield farming” means in a game
In decentralized finance, yield farming commonly means putting crypto-assets to work in protocols in pursuit of rewards. Blockchain-game coverage sometimes uses the phrase more loosely for any reward connected to an NFT, token or player activity. There is no single yield product or standard definition shared by games.
An NFT is a blockchain token designed to identify a distinct asset. NIST authors Peter Mell and Dylan Yaga describe the technology this way: “Non-fungible token (NFT) technology provides a mechanism to enable real assets (both virtual and physical) to be sold and exchanged on a blockchain.” In a game, the NFT might represent a character, land plot or other in-game asset. A game can then attach rewards to owning or locking that asset, or to using it in play.
| Reward mechanism | What the player does | What determines the reward |
|---|---|---|
| Play-linked token rewards | Completes game activities or meets eligibility rules. | The game’s reward rules, activity and available emissions or reward pool. |
| NFT staking | Locks an NFT, often to make it eligible for a game reward. | The project’s staking terms, eligible assets, lock period and reward allocation. |
| Fungible-token staking | Locks a fungible game token, such as a governance or utility token. | The project’s token-staking rules and reward supply; this is not necessarily blockchain validation. |
| Gameplay-linked allocation | Uses eligible NFTs in active gameplay or contributes to a game-defined activity. | Participation, game scoring or contribution rules, and the size and distribution of the reward pool. |
| Proof-of-stake validation | Stakes crypto-assets to help secure or validate a blockchain under its consensus mechanism. | Protocol rules, validator performance and block rewards—not a game’s play or NFT rules. |
These are different dependencies, not interchangeable names for the same activity. A game may combine more than one mechanism, and its use of “staking” does not by itself mean that players are validating a blockchain.

How Axie Infinity’s rewards changed
Axie Infinity offers a useful example of the shift from rewards tied to tokens and asset ownership toward systems that require active game participation. Its mechanics have changed over time, so older descriptions should not be treated as a guide to current eligibility or earnings.
| Date and source | What the source describes | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Historical model, described by the CFPB in April 2024 | Players used Axies, digital pets represented as NFTs on Ronin. They could earn Smooth Love Potion (SLP) through play and spend SLP and Axie Infinity Shards (AXS) to breed Axies. The tokens could be traded on third-party crypto-asset platforms. | This is historical framing, not a complete description of current rewards. The CFPB reports that Axie reached “over 2.7 million daily active users” at its historical peak; that figure is not a current user count. |
| July 1, 2022, Axie Infinity land-staking announcement | Land staking was described as an interim step before land gameplay could support token rewards. The project said: “Once any type of gameplay for Land is released that can support token rewards, these Land Staking rewards will transition to be rewarded through active gameplay.” | This was a dated statement of intent, not evidence of a particular current reward rate. |
| November 26, 2025, Axie Infinity AXS staking post | The post announced a plan to decrease AXS staking rewards by 5% every nine days, beginning December 1, 2025. It also described a planned experiment to use monthly snapshots and airdrops for selected users with high Axie Scores, intended to begin in January 2026 if plans proceeded. | The post described the activity-linked rewards as an experiment and said further information would follow. It does not, by itself, establish that the experiment was implemented. A previously advertised APR should not be assumed to apply now. |
| Terrariums guide, updated July 22, 2026 | The guide describes bAXS distributions connected to active land gameplay and assigned Axies. | This is game-specific documentation. Actual rewards depend on current game rules and participation. |
How Terrariums rewards work
Sky Mavis’s Terrariums Earning Guide says only NFT land plots allow players to earn bAXS through this system. Assigned Axies contribute to a measure called Atia’s Flame, which determines a player’s share of hourly bAXS distributions relative to other participants in that environment. This makes the reward allocation dependent on the game’s activity and relative contributions, not simply on owning an NFT.

Participation also involves constraints and consumable resources. Activating a plot and assigning Axies locks both from listing, transferring or selling through the App.Axie marketplace while the Terrarium remains active. Free Lunium is consumed; when it runs out, the plot enters a recovery phase of approximately five days. The guide also describes buying Lunium from the shop to continue. After a player claims bAXS, it enters an approximately three-day review period before official claiming. These are the guide’s stated mechanics, which may be subject to subsequent game-rule changes.
Axie’s current staking dashboard includes AXS and land staking interfaces. Its displayed values are live and account-dependent, so a dashboard figure does not establish what a particular player will receive or whether rewards will exceed costs.

Game staking is not the same as crypto staking
In proof-of-stake systems, validators stake crypto-assets to support blockchain consensus and may receive block rewards under protocol rules. ESMA’s January 9, 2024 Q&A uses “staking” narrowly for immobilizing crypto-assets to support proof-of-stake or similar consensus in return for validator privileges that can generate block rewards. That definition does not cover every game’s use of the word.
By contrast, a game may call an NFT or token “staked” when it is locked to qualify for a game reward, even if it does not help validate a blockchain. In an active-play model, the reward may instead depend on using assets, completing activities or meeting game-specific criteria. To compare an offer accurately, identify what is being locked, what activity generates or allocates rewards, who controls the rules, and how the reward can be claimed or sold.

Can you earn money playing an NFT game?
It is possible to receive game tokens or NFTs that have a market price, but receiving a reward is not the same as making a profit. The value of a token can change, and a player’s net result depends on whether rewards can be sold, what they sell for, and the costs and time involved in earning them. Token-denominated rewards or an advertised APR are not equivalent to realized cash income.
- Reward rules and supply: Emissions, eligibility and allocation rules can change. A reward measured in tokens does not guarantee a stable value in another currency.
- Competition and activity: In a shared pool or relative-contribution system, another player’s activity may affect a participant’s share.
- Costs and lockups: Entry assets, consumables and time can have value. Locked assets may not be available for sale or transfer during participation.
- Liquidity and price exposure: A token being tradable does not establish that it can be sold at a desired price or in the quantity a player wants.
- Game dependency: Rewards rely on a project’s rules, continued operation and player economy. A reward mechanism is not a guaranteed yield contract.
The CFPB’s April 2024 account also describes Axie’s past economy: as its user base grew, NFT entry costs rose and a hierarchy formed among investors, managers and workers. It says the ecosystem largely fell apart in 2022 after a breach of the game. That is the agency’s historical account of Axie, not a description of every blockchain game or a statement about Axie’s present condition.

Risks to check before participating
Economic and game-rule risk
Check the exact asset and activity required, how rewards are calculated, whether an allocation is fixed or relative to other players, what is consumed, and when assets can be withdrawn or transferred. Project documentation describes intended mechanics; it does not independently establish that an economy is sustainable or that rewards will retain value.
NFT and smart-contract risk
NFT ownership and reward distribution depend on technical systems, wallets and contracts. NIST’s 2024 report, Non-Fungible Token Security (IR 8472), identifies 27 potential security concerns in NFT implementations and advocates systematic security design and implementation. That is a count of potential concerns, not a count of breaches or a measure of gaming-specific loss rates. Technical security is a separate issue from whether a game’s rewards are economically worthwhile.
Regulatory scope
Regulatory statements about staking apply to the activities, entities and jurisdictions they specify; they should not be read as blanket rulings on all game rewards or NFTs. The SEC Division of Corporation Finance statement by Commissioner Hester M. Peirce, dated May 29, 2025, addresses certain proof-of-stake protocol staking activities and specified self-staking or delegated-staking contexts. Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission announced guidance on April 7, 2025 for staking services offered by licensed virtual-asset trading platforms and authorized funds with virtual-asset exposure, including safeguards for client assets and risk disclosures. Neither description establishes a universal legal classification for NFT-game reward programs.
A practical way to evaluate a game reward
- Identify the mechanism. Is the reward for playing, locking a game token, locking an NFT, or validating a blockchain? Do not infer the mechanism from the word “staking.”
- Read the current rules. Check the project’s latest official guide for eligible assets, activity requirements, allocation method, claim steps and rule-change notices. Treat older announcements as dated evidence, not current terms.
- List what is committed. Record any entry asset, token lock, NFT lock, marketplace restriction, consumable, fee and time requirement. Include what happens when a resource runs out or participation ends.
- Trace the reward to an exit. Confirm whether it is transferable or tradable, where a sale could occur, and what liquidity and price uncertainty remain. Do not equate a displayed token amount with fiat profit.
- Separate return from risk. Consider economic rule changes, security and custody separately. A favorable reward estimate cannot eliminate technical risk, while a secure contract cannot guarantee a valuable token or profitable game economy.
Broad DeFi figures should not be mistaken for game-yield data. The EBA and ESMA’s January 16, 2025 report says value locked in DeFi protocols globally represented 4% of total crypto-asset market value; it is not a statistic about NFT gaming yields. The same report discusses hacks and stolen-asset value in relation to the broader DeFi market, not as a gaming-specific loss estimate. Comparable, independently measured current yields across NFT games are not established by the cited materials.
