Protect the Instagram account you use for music by securing more than its password: turn on two-factor authentication and login alerts, keep your recovery email and phone current, review devices and connected apps, and secure the email account tied to Instagram. If access is lost, start at Meta’s official Instagram hacked-account page and follow the options offered for your situation. Recovery methods vary, and access is not guaranteed.
Why account access is worth protecting
An Instagram account can be a working channel for release announcements, fan communication, and professional inquiries. Losing access can interrupt those activities, so treat the account’s password, recovery details, and devices or apps with access as one security picture.
Secure the account before a problem
Turn on two-factor authentication and login alerts
Meta recommends two-factor authentication (2FA), an extra verification step in addition to a password. Instagram’s available methods can include a phone number or an authenticator app; options may vary by account, location, and current settings. Meta’s guidance on malicious apps favors an authenticator app where available. Enable alerts for login attempts from unrecognized devices so you can investigate activity you did not initiate. See Meta’s Security Checkup guidance and its Safety Center.
Review devices, login activity, and connected access
Check recent login activity and devices for sessions you do not recognize. Also review apps connected to Instagram and any account-sharing settings; remove access you no longer use or trust. Meta’s Security Checkup covers login activity, profile information, accounts sharing login information, and recovery contact details. Security settings and labels can move, so use Instagram’s current security or Accounts Center settings rather than relying on a fixed sequence of menu taps.
#1 Best Overall
Keep recovery contact details usable
Make sure the email address and phone number associated with Instagram are current and accessible. Secure the email account itself, since it may be needed to receive recovery messages. Meta’s Help Centre warns that if you cannot access the registered email and have not linked Instagram and Facebook, it may be unable to restore Instagram access; if the email account is inaccessible, try to recover it through its provider. See Instagram’s Help Centre.
Be cautious with unexpected messages and apps
Do not follow an unexpected message’s link or open its attachment just because it claims to concern your account. Verify account issues through Instagram’s own settings or Help Centre, and never disclose your password or verification codes in response to an unsolicited request. Meta has also documented malicious apps disguised as useful tools as a way login information can be stolen. Its guidance is available in the Meta Safety Center.

If you lose access or suspect a compromise
-
Go directly to instagram.com/hacked, Meta’s official route for Instagram account access problems. Reach it yourself rather than using a link in an unsolicited message.
-
Follow the recovery flow currently presented for your account. Meta says recovery options can adapt to the situation and may use familiar-device recognition or verification methods such as an optional selfie video. These options are conditional; not every account will receive every method. Details are in Meta’s account recovery announcement.

If the recovery email is unavailable, try to regain access through the email provider. Meta’s Help Centre notes that inability to access the registered email, when Instagram is not linked with Facebook, can prevent it from restoring access.
-
Once back in, review login activity, recovery contact details, connected apps, and account-sharing settings again using Instagram’s security settings and Checkup.
Do not rely on an unofficial recovery service or pay someone who claims they can bypass Meta’s verification. Meta does not promise that every account can be recovered or give a universal recovery time. Keep trying only through official options presented for your case.

In a December 2025 announcement updated in March 2026, Meta reported that new account hacks decreased by more than 30% globally across Facebook and Instagram in the prior year, and that the relative success rate of hacked-account recovery increased by more than 30% in the United States and Canada that year. These are company-reported figures, not independent measurements or musician-specific outcomes; they do not guarantee that a particular account can be recovered. See Meta’s announcement.
