Multiphysics simulation helps electric-racing engineers assess how changes to one subsystem affect the rest of the car before they commit to hardware. By linking relevant electrical, thermal, electromagnetic, fluid, structural and vehicle-level models, teams can compare designs and race strategies against defined track conditions. It can reveal performance opportunities and risks—such as a cooling change that affects drag or a power demand that raises battery temperature—but it cannot guarantee reliability or replace physical testing.

Why electric race-car design is a coupled problem

An electric race car is not a collection of parts that can be optimized independently. Battery output affects the power available to the inverter and motor; electrical losses create heat; temperature can affect component behavior; and cooling that removes heat requires airflow or fluid flow. Aerodynamic choices affect both grip and drag, while vehicle mass, tire loading, braking and energy limits shape the lap the car can complete.

That is why a change that looks beneficial in a component test may not improve the whole car. More power, for example, is useful only if the battery, inverter, motor, cooling system and energy budget can support it under the intended conditions. A cooling solution must manage heat without imposing an unacceptable aerodynamic or energy cost. Simulation makes these interactions visible earlier in the design process, when engineers can compare alternatives without building every version.

Formula E’s October 7, 2026 announcement of COMSOL as its Official Multiphysics Partner describes the challenge in terms of electrical, thermal, structural, electromagnetic, fluid and battery systems. COMSOL described its software as an integrated environment for physics-based modeling with coupled-physics capabilities. The partnership announcement also says the collaboration will explore simulation apps and digital twins. These are company statements about the collaboration, not evidence that simulation alone delivers a particular performance or reliability gain.

What the different simulation tools do

“Simulation” covers several kinds of analysis. They can be connected in a workflow, but they answer different questions and use different levels of detail.

Approach What it represents Typical design question
Component and multiphysics models One component or linked physical domains, such as battery electrical behavior and heat, motor electromagnetic behavior and temperature, or structural response to load. Will this component remain within its electrical, temperature or load limits under a defined demand?
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) Airflow or cooling-fluid flow, including aerodynamic forces and heat removal. How does a body shape affect drag and downforce, or how effectively does a cooling flow carry heat away?
Vehicle and lap simulation Vehicle dynamics, component behavior, energy constraints and track conditions in a system-level scenario. How might a setup or power strategy affect lap time, energy use or race pace on a specified track?
Optimization A search through candidate designs or control settings against a chosen objective and constraints; it depends on the underlying models. Which candidate best meets a defined goal, such as lap time, while respecting energy or component limits?

A detailed component or CFD model can represent local behavior at a higher level of detail, while a reduced-order or system-level model can make it practical to evaluate many operating points or candidate strategies. The choice depends on the decision: a cooling passage detail may require flow analysis, while a race-strategy comparison needs a vehicle and energy model that can represent a lap or stint. The fastest computation is not automatically the most useful one; it must capture the effects that matter to the question.

How engineers use simulation in a design loop

  1. Define the decision and scenario. Specify whether the task is component sizing, cooling design, aero selection, vehicle setup or race strategy. Set a relevant track layout, speed or power profile, ambient and component temperatures, loads, and regulatory or energy constraints. Strategy analysis should use the event or scenario being considered rather than a generic lap.
  2. Choose the physical effects that can change the answer. Couple only what is material to the question, but do not omit a consequential interaction. For a battery analysis, that can mean linking electrical response and heat generation to temperature behavior. For an aero comparison, airflow, drag, downforce and energy demand matter alongside vehicle performance.
  3. Run candidate designs or controls virtually. Engineers can compare cooling layouts, powertrain choices, motor sizing, torque distribution, aero packages or energy-management strategies. This can reduce the number of physical iterations needed, but the result remains a prediction made under specified assumptions.
  4. Check predictions against evidence. Compare outputs with component tests, rig or wind-tunnel data, track measurements or telemetry as appropriate. A match in one tested range builds confidence for that range; it does not establish accuracy in every condition.
  5. Use results to select the next test or design iteration. Simulation can help prioritize which candidate deserves hardware evaluation and identify conditions worth probing. Physical tests then provide additional evidence and can expose effects the model did not capture.

Battery temperature and energy management

Battery temperature is tied to the power a race strategy demands. A model that estimates energy use without representing heat may miss a thermal constraint; a thermal analysis detached from the driving demand may miss when or why heat is generated. Engineers therefore have reason to consider electrical behavior and temperature together against a track-specific power profile.

An Ansys case study about Porsche Motorsport describes coupling an equivalent-circuit electrical model with a reduced-order thermal model. The stated purpose is to estimate battery state of charge, voltage and temperature against a track-specific power profile. Such a model can help compare how a component or control choice behaves through an operating scenario, rather than at a single steady condition. Ansys says virtual evaluation in this Porsche example helped decrease the need for physical prototypes; that is the vendor’s description of its case, not a quantified universal reduction in prototypes or development time.

Energy management also involves a timing question: how to use available power and manage thermal behavior over a race, not merely whether the battery can supply a peak value. Research results show how model-dependent that question is. Geisberger and co-authors’ 2024 preprint on optimization-based energy and thermal management reports that its proposed method computed a 47-kilometer horizon in 2.5 seconds. That is a result for the paper’s approach and scenario, not a production-car benchmark or a guarantee that a team can optimize any race in that time.

Downforce, drag and the energy cost of grip

Downforce can increase tire loading and support grip, but it comes with aerodynamic drag. Greater drag means the car must spend energy overcoming more resistance at speed. The right aero choice therefore depends on the track, operating conditions and race objective: a setup that favors grip may not be the best choice when energy conservation is dominant.

Porsche’s April 20, 2026 announcement of its GEN4 Formula E car, the 975 RSE, describes new aerodynamic packages and permanent all-wheel drive. Porsche technical project leader Olivier Champenois said: “Within roughly a decade, Formula E has become so fast that aerodynamic downforce is now a necessity. However, downforce always comes with drag and increases energy consumption.” The statement explains the tradeoff; it does not establish that one aero configuration is optimal for every circuit or race.

CFD can help engineers examine airflow and aerodynamic forces, while vehicle and lap simulation can assess how a candidate package affects the larger performance and energy picture. Canopy Simulation Services’ July 2026 article describes CFD on a simplified Formula E Gen 3 car and a comparison of simulated push-rod loads with race telemetry. This is an example of using measured evidence to check a model, not proof that every aerodynamic or structural prediction will match telemetry under all conditions.

Reported result Scope and qualification
600 kW (816 PS) Porsche’s April 2026 figure for its announced GEN4 Formula E car, the 975 RSE. It is a car specification, not a measured simulation benefit.
More than 97% drivetrain efficiency; less than 3% of energy lost from battery to wheels Porsche’s 2026 report for the current GEN3 Evo-generation Porsche 99X Electric. It is not a general efficiency result for all electric race cars.
More than 4% improvement in achievable lap time Broere, van Kampen and Salazar’s 2021 Formula Student Netherlands simulation case, comparing torque vectoring with a fixed power split for an all-wheel-drive electric race car. This is a modeled result, not a Formula E performance gain.
0.9 seconds per lap at the same energy target at three car lengths; around 1.4 seconds per lap at 0.5 car lengths Alexandra Gray’s MSc research, as described by Canopy Simulation Services in July 2026, for a following car in its Gen 3 energy-limited simulation case. These are case-specific simulated results, not a universal benefit of following another car.
47-kilometer horizon in 2.5 seconds Geisberger and co-authors’ 2024 preprint abstract, describing a computation for its proposed energy and thermal management approach. It is a research computation, not a production-car benchmark.

The values concern different cars, models, objectives and methods. In particular, a simulated lap-time improvement in a Formula Student case cannot be transferred to Formula E, and a drivetrain specification is not evidence that a simulation method caused the specification.

How simulation supports reliability without guaranteeing it

Reliability analysis asks more than whether a car can complete one modeled lap. Engineers need to consider whether components remain within acceptable thermal and structural conditions under relevant loads and operating scenarios. Thermal models can help identify overheating risk; structural analysis can evaluate response to loads; and coupled models can show whether a performance change creates a new stress or temperature concern elsewhere in the system.

Those are ways to inform design and testing, not proof that a complete car will be reliable. Model accuracy depends on the represented physics, input data and assumptions, while operating conditions can differ from the modeled case. Validation against relevant physical evidence is therefore important, and confidence is bounded by the conditions that have been checked. The cited sources do not quantify a general reliability improvement for a complete electric race car, so no percentage can responsibly be assigned.

Optimization: a useful answer to a carefully framed question

Optimization searches among candidates for a result that best meets an objective while satisfying constraints. For racing, the objective might be lap time, but the constraints could include energy, temperature, power or other limits. Changing the objective or constraints can change the answer. So can changing the vehicle model, track, operating conditions or comparison baseline.

That is why a reported result should always be read with its comparator and scope. The 2021 convex-optimization study by Broere, van Kampen and Salazar reported more than 4% improvement in achievable lap time from torque vectoring versus a fixed power split in its Formula Student simulation case. It is evidence about that modeled comparison, not a forecast for a different car or series. Likewise, an optimum is only as credible as the model and assumptions that produced it; engineering judgment and validation remain part of the decision.

Formula E’s current simulation context

On October 7, 2026, Formula E announced COMSOL as its Official Multiphysics Partner. The announcement describes work using COMSOL Multiphysics and exploring simulation apps and digital twins. COMSOL’s announcement says version 2027 is scheduled for release later in autumn 2026 and identifies electric-motor modeling and system-level simulation among announced capabilities. As of October 13, 2026, that is a forward-looking company statement, not evidence that the version has already shipped.
