The clearest public figure is not an initial payment: in a February 2026 interview, Ed Robertson described his cumulative royalties only in broad terms, saying they were “not seven digits, and it’s not 10 digits, but it’s in between those somewhere.” He did not disclose an exact total.
What did Ed Robertson say he earned?
TVLine reported on February 9, 2026, that Robertson declined to state a precise royalty total. His “between seven and 10 digits” remark indicates a very broad scale, not a specific dollar amount, and refers to his royalties over time—not the band’s total receipts or an upfront fee. He also said the theme’s financial impact “dwarfed ‘One Week’” and called the effect life-changing. TVLine’s interview report
Why there is no confirmed upfront payment figure
Creating a theme, receiving an initial fee, and earning royalties as the song is used are distinct parts of a deal. The cited reporting does not disclose the contract’s initial fee, licensing terms, royalty formula, or final distribution among band members. Robertson’s comment therefore cannot answer how much the group was paid at signing or for the original recording.
Barenaked Ladies created and recorded the theme for the series. CBS News reported that a full-length version surfaced in 2007 and that the band later included it on its 2011 best-of album, Hits from Yesterday & the Day Before. CBS News’ account of the song

What Steven Page’s lawsuit alleged
In 2015, former band member Steven Page sued over his share of the theme-song proceeds. Courthouse News Service reported that the complaint alleged the song had generated “several million dollars” and sought a 20 percent share, valued at at least $1 million. Those figures describe claims reported from the complaint; they are not a verified accounting, a court finding, or a confirmed payment or settlement. Courthouse News Service’s report
