What wage is reported for Matt Targett?
FBref’s 2025–26 Newcastle United wage table lists Targett at £40,000 a week and £2,080,000 a year. The annual figure corresponds to 52 weeks at the listed weekly rate; both figures should be read as estimates from a secondary salary-data source, not confirmed payroll information. FBref’s Newcastle wage table does not make the number an official club disclosure.
Does that mean Middlesbrough paid him £40,000 a week?
No. Newcastle announced on 27 August 2025 that Targett joined Middlesbrough on a season-long loan for 2025–26, and Middlesbrough also confirmed the loan. A Newcastle wage-table estimate does not show what Middlesbrough paid, what Newcastle continued to cover, or whether the clubs divided his wages. No official wage-sharing amount is established in the clubs’ announcements.
There is a different third-party estimate for the loan season: SalaryLeaks lists £45,000 per week (£2.3 million per year) for Targett at Middlesbrough in 2025–26. That conflicts with FBref’s Newcastle listing. Neither figure is an official salary, and they cannot be used to claim Targett received a pay rise or that Middlesbrough paid the larger amount.

What is confirmed about his Newcastle contract?
Newcastle announced Targett’s permanent signing on 8 June 2022 and said he had signed a four-year contract. The announcement did not disclose his wage. Targett said: “I’m absolutely delighted to sign a four-year contract with this club,” a statement about signing the deal rather than its financial terms.
On 2 June 2026, Newcastle announced that Targett was departing after his loan season and recorded 47 appearances for the club. Its departure announcement likewise did not state an individual salary.

The distinction matters because the Newcastle estimate, Middlesbrough listing and season-long loan describe different things. Taken together, they do not verify what either club actually paid Targett during the loan.
