The official record reviewed does not give a dollar amount for Elon Musk’s work with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). A February 14, 2025 White House interview described his service as unpaid, but that exchange is not a complete accounting of possible reimbursements, benefits, or other indirect payments.
What the official interview says about Musk’s pay
In a February 14, 2025 interview, Fox News host Sean Hannity characterized Musk as “working for free with DOGE.” Musk replied: “Well, actually, some people are Federal employees, so they do.” The exchange distinguishes Musk’s described unpaid service from other DOGE participants who were federal employees and received pay; it does not state a salary or dollar total for Musk. What Musk’s government status does—and does not—tell us
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) reports that Musk served in the White House Office as a special government employee (SGE) and senior adviser to the president, advised on U.S. DOGE Service (USDS) work, and left his White House position in May 2025, according to a presidential statement. The GAO explains that an SGE may perform temporary duties “with or without compensation” for no more than 130 days in a one-year period. That rule describes the role’s permitted duration and compensation status; it does not establish what Musk personally received.
The GAO report covers personnel and ethics activity for DOGE personnel who held positions within the Executive Office of the President from January 20, 2025, through January 31, 2026. It identified 206 personnel within that scope, a count that is neither a count of all DOGE-related workers nor a count of paid employees. What can be concluded about the amount
The available official sources support describing Musk’s DOGE-related service as unpaid, but they do not establish an exact amount or provide a comprehensive accounting of reimbursements, expenses, benefits, or other indirect payments. It would be inaccurate to assign Musk a salary based on the pay of other federal employees or to treat his SGE designation as proof of a particular payment.
