In 2025, he called the salary “not massive” and rejected a reported $250,000 payment for The Fellowship of the Ring without giving a replacement figure.
What did Elijah Wood say about his Lord of the Rings pay?
Speaking to Business Insider at the 2025 Texas Film Awards, Wood said the cast signed up for all three films rather than negotiating a new contract after each release. He described the arrangement as less lucrative than making one film and renegotiating for the next: “Because we weren’t making one movie and then renegotiating a contract for the next, it wasn’t the sort of lucrative scenario that you could sort of rest easy for the rest of your life.”
Wood also said the commitment meant taking on a project that would remain part of their lives: “The benefit of that was that we were also signing up for something that was going to be a part of our lives for ever.” These comments explain why he characterized the salary as “not massive”; they do not disclose his fee or the other terms of his contract.
Was Wood paid $250,000 for The Fellowship of the Ring?
No confirmed figure supports that claim. Asked about the reported $250,000 payment for the first film, Wood said it was inaccurate and declined to supply another number, saying “it doesn’t matter.” The reported figure was about The Fellowship of the Ring, not a verified total for all three films. The Guardian, The Independent and Variety reported his comments on April 3, 2025.
Why didn’t the actors renegotiate after each film?
Wood said the cast committed to all three movies before their success was known, rather than signing one film at a time and renegotiating after each release. As a result, he said, their fees were not linked to each installment’s later box-office performance through a new negotiation. His explanation supports the point that the initial arrangement was not a chance to reset pay after each hit; it does not establish the specific contract terms for Wood.
The trilogy was released from 2001 through 2003. The Guardian reported a combined worldwide box-office gross of $2.96 billion and a budget of $281 million. Those figures describe the films’ commercial scale, not what Wood was paid.
What did other cast members earn?
Two reported disclosures offer context, but neither establishes Wood’s compensation:
| Actor | Reported pay | Scope | Source context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orlando Bloom | $175,000 | All three films | The Independent reported the figure in 2025, describing Bloom’s 2019 Howard Stern interview. |
| Sean Astin | $250,000 | The trilogy | The Independent reported the figure in 2025, describing Astin’s 2017 Jim & Sam Show interview. |
The pay figures are attributed to Bloom and Astin, respectively. Cast members’ contracts can differ, so these amounts cannot be used to calculate, rank or infer Wood’s pay.

Did Wood receive royalties or bonuses?
The sources reporting Wood’s comments do not establish whether he received residuals, bonuses or backend participation, or what those amounts might have been. His comments about the initial salary do not answer those separate contract questions.
