What was Chansiri reported to want for Sheffield Wednesday?
The reported comparison was that Chansiri valued Wednesday at twice Sheffield United’s £111 million purchase figure. Multiplying £111 million by two gives approximately £222 million. The report described a valuation communicated to brokers; it does not establish that Chansiri published a formal £222 million asking price or that anyone agreed to pay it. How did the reported valuation change in 2025?
By 3 September 2025, BBC Sport said Chansiri’s valuation was understood to be about £100 million. The same report said Chansiri had acknowledged turning down two offers earlier that summer, describing them as worth £40 million and £30 million. Why did an expert estimate the club at £40m–£50m?
Football finance expert Kieran Maguire estimated Wednesday at £40 million to £50 million. BBC Sport reported that his rough method used a multiple of two to two-and-a-half times revenue and took account of the fact that the club did not own Hillsborough. He said: “The £100m valuation appears to be without merit and has no logical backing.” That is Maguire’s assessment, not a transaction value accepted by the club or a buyer. Was Hillsborough part of the club’s value?
Not necessarily. BBC Sport’s account of Maguire’s estimate notes that Wednesday did not own its stadium, so a club-only valuation should not be treated as if it included the ground. The EFL judgment describes different documents concerning Hillsborough: an unsigned draft set a minimum price of £40 million, while a later signed document set a minimum of £37.5 million. What did Chansiri say about selling?
His public comments during 2025 did not amount to a single confirmed sale price. Notes from the Supporters Engagement Panel meeting on 15 April 2025 record him saying that selling was not his intention, while adding that a sale would have to be to the right people with sustainable plans. A like-for-like valuation also depends on the date and league context, revenue and liabilities, and whether the ground is included. The available reporting does not establish an audited, comparable valuation model for Wednesday and United, so the “same as Sheffield United” claim should be understood as a reported comparison—not proof the clubs had equal market values.
