At Vanguard’s reported 0.98% 30-day SEC yield for VOO as of August 31, 2026, an estimated $612,245 invested would produce $6,000 a year before taxes, or an average of $500 a month. Using Vanguard’s $702.03 share price as of October 1, 2026, that is about 872 shares. VOO’s 2026 schedule shows quarterly—not monthly—distributions, and neither the yield nor future payments are guaranteed.

How the $612,245 estimate is calculated

The target is $500 per month on average. Multiplying by 12 gives an annual income goal of $6,000. To estimate the investment needed, divide that annual goal by the fund’s yield expressed as a decimal:

Investment estimate = desired annual income ÷ yield

Calculation item Figure Meaning
Monthly income target $500 The requested average, before taxes
Annual income target $6,000 $500 multiplied by 12
VOO 30-day SEC yield 0.98% Vanguard’s figure as of August 31, 2026
Estimated investment About $612,245 $6,000 divided by 0.0098
VOO share price $702.03 Vanguard’s listed price as of October 1, 2026
Approximate share count About 872 The estimated investment divided by the cited share price, rounded

The result is an illustration, not a quote for a fixed-income product. It uses a yield and a share price recorded on different dates, and assumes the yield remains unchanged. The number of shares or dollars needed will differ if either figure moves. The share-price calculation is a way to translate the estimated balance into an approximate number of shares; it does not establish what those shares will cost when you invest.

The share count is rounded: dividing $612,245 by $702.03 gives roughly 872.4 shares. At that cited price, 872 whole shares would cost about $612,170 before any brokerage charges or other costs that may apply. That small difference is a consequence of rounding, not a different income estimate. The calculation starts with a dollar balance based on yield; converting it to shares is a separate, price-dependent step.

What the yield does—and does not—tell you

A 30-day SEC yield is a standardized, annualized snapshot of income based on a recent 30-day period. It makes a fund’s recent income easier to express as a yearly rate, but it is not a forecast or a promise about the distributions an investor will receive. In particular, annualizing a short measurement period does not mean VOO will deliver the same income over the next year.

The calculation above treats the stated yield as if it continued for a full year. Actual distributions can vary, and a yield figure can change as the fund’s income and market value change. The estimate also does not account for changes in VOO’s share price. A rising or falling share price can change the account balance even if the number of shares stays the same; it does not turn the calculated income target into a guaranteed payment.

Use the figure as a planning reference tied to the stated date, not as an amount to budget as certain. If you are making an investment decision later, use a newly dated yield and share price from Vanguard and repeat the calculation. Keep the dates next to the figures: a yield from one date and price from another should not be described as though both were observed at the same moment.

Yield and share price answer different questions in this estimate. The yield is the input used to estimate annual income from a dollar investment. The share price helps translate that dollar estimate into a share count. If the share price changes while the yield stays the same, the estimated dollar balance from the formula does not change, but the approximate number of shares does. If the yield changes, the estimated balance changes too, even if you continue to use the same $6,000 annual goal.

Does VOO pay $500 every month?

No. Vanguard’s 2026 schedule lists VOO ex-dividend and reinvestment dates in March, June, September, and December, with payable dates of March 31, June 30, September 30, and December 23, respectively. That schedule indicates quarterly distributions, not monthly checks.

The $500 is an annualized average divided by twelve to make the goal easier to understand. It does not mean each month has a VOO payment of that size, or that each quarterly payment will be exactly $1,500. The schedule identifies dates, not the amount of a future distribution. Payment size and timing should be checked against Vanguard’s applicable dividend information rather than inferred from the annualized estimate.

This distinction matters if the money is meant to cover regular monthly expenses. A quarterly payment pattern does not itself provide a fixed monthly cash flow. You would need to plan for the timing of any distributions, and the amount received could differ from the estimate. The fund’s calendar is useful for understanding when distributions are scheduled; it is not a commitment to a particular income level.

So if you are asking, “How much VOO do I need for $500 a month?” the answer depends on whether you mean a monthly average across the year or a $500 deposit in every calendar month. The calculation here addresses the first meaning: $6,000 of estimated annual income. Vanguard’s cited schedule does not show monthly payouts, so it cannot support a promise of a $500 payment each month.

How to update the estimate when the yield changes

The arithmetic can be reused whenever you have a new yield. Convert the percentage to a decimal, then divide the annual income goal by that decimal. For example, 0.98% becomes 0.0098. If your target is still $500 per month, the annual goal remains $6,000; a different yield changes the required balance. The direction is straightforward: a lower yield means a larger balance is needed for the same estimated annual income, while a higher yield means a smaller balance under the same simplified calculation.

  1. Set the income target. Decide whether $500 means income before tax or the amount you want left after tax. The calculation shown here is gross, before individual taxes.
  2. Annualize the target. Multiply the monthly amount by twelve. For the target in this example, that is $6,000.
  3. Find a dated yield. Use VOO’s published yield and note its measurement date. Do not treat an older yield as current.
  4. Divide the annual target by the decimal yield. This gives a yield-based estimate of the balance required, assuming the rate holds.
  5. Translate the balance into shares only if useful. Divide by a share price observed on a stated date. The share count is approximate and changes with the price.
  6. Revisit the inputs rather than treating the result as fixed. A changed yield, price, distribution, tax situation, or income goal can change the amount relevant to your plan.

This formula estimates income from a yield; it does not tell you whether VOO is appropriate for your goals, how the investment will perform, or how much cash you will actually receive. It also does not calculate an after-tax target. Those questions depend on circumstances beyond the fund-level yield.

Keep the calculation’s purpose narrow: it is a way to convert an income goal into an approximate balance using a dated yield. It is not a return forecast, a suggested portfolio allocation, or a way to determine what the fund will distribute in a particular quarter. Rechecking the inputs is especially important when the goal is tied to a specific spending need, because an annual average can hide both timing differences and changes in distributions.

What VOO’s expense ratio means for this balance

Vanguard lists VOO’s expense ratio at 0.03% in information accessed October 9, 2026. Applying that rate to the illustrative balance of $612,245 gives approximately $184 for a full year if the balance stayed constant: $612,245 × 0.0003 is about $183.67.

This is a simple illustration of the published ratio, not a separate bill estimate for a changing account balance. The expense ratio is already part of the fund’s operating economics and should not be subtracted a second time from the yield-based income estimate. Doing so would count the fee again in a calculation that starts from the fund’s stated yield.

The $184 figure is an annual estimate at a constant balance, not a fixed charge independent of account value. If the balance changes, multiplying the applicable balance by 0.0003 gives a different illustration. It is useful context for the cost associated with the published expense ratio, but it does not change the core income formula or guarantee a particular net distribution.

Taxes can make your personal target different

The income estimate is before tax. The amount left for you to spend depends on your tax circumstances, including factors such as filing status, taxable income, account type, and whether you meet the requirements for qualified dividend treatment. Without those details, a reliable personal after-tax monthly estimate cannot be calculated from the fund’s yield alone.

Vanguard reports that 97.16% of VOO’s 2025 dividend distributions were classified as qualified dividend income (QDI). That is a historical fund-level figure for that tax year, not a guarantee that all distributions to a particular shareholder will qualify. Vanguard explains that qualified-dividend eligibility includes holding-period requirements and that ETF distributions pass through from underlying holdings. Whether a distribution receives qualified treatment for an individual investor depends on eligibility and personal circumstances.

If your goal is $500 after taxes, do not simply assume that the gross estimate will leave that amount in your pocket. First establish how the distributions are likely to be treated in your account and situation; then use an appropriate after-tax income target in your planning. A tax professional can help assess individual tax treatment, which the fund-level percentage cannot determine.

The 97.16% figure should therefore be read as historical context about VOO’s 2025 distributions, not as a personal tax rate or a shortcut for converting $500 gross into a take-home amount. An investor’s account type and eligibility matter, and the fund-level statistic does not provide the missing personal details. If you need an after-tax target, separate the income goal from the tax estimate rather than applying the historical percentage mechanically.

What to take from the estimate before investing

  • It is an income calculation, not a guarantee. The result assumes a dated yield continues, while future yields and distributions may differ.
  • The payment cadence is quarterly. The monthly figure is an average across a year, not a promise of monthly deposits.
  • The share count is only a translation of a balance. It uses a price from a different stated date than the yield and will change with the market price.
  • The target is gross. Taxes and personal eligibility can affect take-home income, and the historical QDI percentage does not settle an individual investor’s treatment.
  • The fee illustration has a specific basis. It applies the listed expense ratio to a constant estimated balance and is not an additional deduction to make from the yield estimate.

For a practical plan, keep the distinction between an average annualized income goal and actual quarterly distributions clear. Treat the calculated balance as a starting estimate, refresh the dated inputs when you use it, and avoid relying on an unchanged distribution amount for expenses that require certainty.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much VOO do I need for $500 a month?

Using Vanguard’s 0.98% 30-day SEC yield as of August 31, 2026, the estimate is about $612,245 for $6,000 in annual income before taxes. At Vanguard’s $702.03 share price as of October 1, 2026, that is roughly 872 shares. Both inputs are dated, and the estimate is not guaranteed.

Does VOO pay dividends monthly?

No. Vanguard’s 2026 schedule lists ex-dividend and reinvestment dates in March, June, September, and December, with quarterly payable dates. The $500 monthly figure is an average of estimated annual income divided by twelve, not a monthly VOO payment.

Is $612,245 enough to receive $500 a month after taxes?

Not necessarily. The estimate is before tax. Your take-home amount depends on factors such as filing status, taxable income, account type, and whether you meet qualified-dividend holding-period requirements. Vanguard’s reported 97.16% QDI share for VOO’s 2025 distributions is historical fund-level information, not a personal tax estimate.

What would VOO’s 0.03% expense ratio cost on that balance?

On a constant $612,245 balance, 0.03% works out to about $184 for a full year. That is an illustration based on the listed ratio, not a separate amount to subtract again from the yield-based estimate.

The Bottom Line

At Vanguard’s 0.98% 30-day SEC yield as of August 31, 2026, about $612,245—roughly 872 shares at the $702.03 share price listed October 1, 2026—would target $6,000 in annual income before taxes, or $500 a month on average. VOO’s 2026 schedule is quarterly, and yields, share prices, distributions, and individual tax outcomes can change.
