There’s no required or universally accepted tip for movers. For a local move, a practical starting point is $5–$10 per mover per hour, adjusted for the work and service. For a long-distance move, plan for the time involved and any change of crew; one published guide suggests $50–$100 per mover per day. These are recommendations, not rules. Check the company’s tipping policy and decide after reviewing the completed work.
How much should you tip movers?
Use a per-mover amount as a straightforward way to budget: it connects the tip to the time and number of people doing the work. U-Haul Moving Help and Move.org suggest $5–$10 per mover per hour; ConsumerAffairs gives the same range for a short local move. Those figures are published guidance, not an industry standard or obligation. U-Haul Moving Help, Move.org and ConsumerAffairs describe different approaches.
For example, Move.org’s illustration of four movers receiving $5 each per hour comes to $80 for four hours or $160 for eight hours. Treat that as a calculation example, not a prescribed total: your budget, the actual time worked and the service all matter.
Published approaches differ
| Source | Published guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| U-Haul Moving Help (updated 2026) | $5–$10 per mover per hour, or 15%–20% of total cost as an alternative | Optional suggestions; company policies can differ. |
| NerdWallet (updated 2025) | 10%–20% of total move cost; $4–$15 per mover per hour; or $20–$50 per mover per working day. It also cites $50–$100 per mover per day as common long-distance guidance. | Several options are presented, rather than one agreed calculation. |
| Move.org (byline dated 2025) | $5–$10 per worker per hour | Also discusses a percentage for an excellent, continuous long-distance crew. |
| ConsumerAffairs (updated 2026) | $5–$10 per mover per hour for a short local move; $40–$100 per mover for a longer full-day move | Emphasizes difficulty and service rather than automatically applying a percentage. |
Per-worker calculations reflect crew size and labor; a percentage is easy to calculate but can become substantial when the move bill is high. The guidance above comes from providers and editorial guides. It does not establish a measured, representative industry rate.

How should you adjust the amount?
Consider the work the crew actually did, not just the invoice total. Difficult access, stairs, heavy or fragile items, extra stops, bad weather and additional services can justify a larger tip if the service was good. Careless handling, damage, unexplained delays or unprofessional behavior are reasons to give less or nothing.
- Consider the number of movers and hours worked when using an hourly amount.
- For a full-day job, use a per-day figure only as a planning guide; published daily recommendations vary.
- For a long-distance move, assess each stage and crew separately rather than assuming the same people did all the work.
- Keep the amount within your budget. A tip is optional, not a condition of receiving service.
Do you tip movers when they load or unload?
For a one-day move, decide after the work is complete, when you can assess the service. If the move spans multiple days or uses different teams, tipping at the end of each workday can help you recognize the workers who helped that day. On a long-distance job, pickup and delivery may involve different crews; allocate any tip to the people who actually handled each stage.

Should you give each mover a separate tip?
You can hand each mover an individual amount or give a group total to the crew leader to divide. Individual handoffs make your intended amount clear. A group tip is also workable when passing money to each person is impractical; state that it is for the crew.
Cash makes individual handoffs simple, but payment options depend on the company. U-Haul Moving Help allows customers to tip in cash on the spot or online later. For other movers, ask in advance whether card or electronic tips are accepted and how they are distributed.

Do you have to tip movers?
No. U-Haul says tips are not mandatory and notes that some companies do not accept tips or account for gratuity in their base price. Check the mover’s policy and review the quote or invoice for any gratuity already included before adding a tip. Policies vary, and there is no universal rule requiring a particular amount.

A direct thank-you, a review or a referral can show appreciation. You can also offer refreshments or lunch, but neither is required, and food should not be treated as a substitute for a monetary tip if you choose to give one. Ask about allergies or preferences before providing food. Elliot Helm, owner of Sterling Interstate, told ConsumerAffairs: “Even during a really long day, just ordering lunch is a really kind gesture.” ConsumerAffairs
