The Emily Post Institute recommends that range, while experts interviewed by NerdWallet include 10% at the lower end. Tipping is discretionary, not a fixed requirement.
What tip amount do experts recommend?
The guidance varies by source and situation. The Emily Post Institute’s tipping guide lists 15–20% for a nail technician and advises moving closer to 20% for elaborate or longer services. In NerdWallet’s interviews, etiquette expert Elaine Swann describes 10% for good service, 15% for great service, and 20% or more for exceptional service.
| Guidance | Suggested amount | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Emily Post Institute | 15–20% | Use the upper end for elaborate or longer services. |
| Experts interviewed by NerdWallet | 10–20% or more | Swann ties the amount to her assessment of service; the article’s salon owner also says satisfaction and budget can inform the choice. |
| Cyndi Ramirez, founder of Chillhouse, as reported by Allure | 20% expected in her view; 30% or more at a cheap salon in her own practice | This is Ramirez’s stated view and personal practice, not a universal rule. Allure’s account covers beauty-service tipping. |
For a $45 service, 15% is $6.75 and 20% is $9. For a $45 pedicure, NerdWallet gives a broader 10–20% range of $4.50–$9. The Emily Post examples are arithmetic based on its recommended percentages, not a separate survey result.
What changes where you land in the range?
Service length and complexity
For detailed nail art, an elaborate set, or a longer appointment, Emily Post recommends leaning toward 20%. The same percentage need not fit every service or every customer’s budget.

Your satisfaction and budget
NerdWallet’s interviewed experts describe tipping as a matter of judgment. The amount is discretionary, so do not treat any one percentage as mandatory or as a measure of what every salon expects.
How should you leave the tip?
Some salon contributors interviewed by NerdWallet prefer cash because it may reach the technician sooner and avoid card-processing costs. That preference is not universal. Ask the salon how electronic tips are handled and whether tips are pooled, rather than assuming a card tip goes directly to the person who performed your service. One salon owner’s reported processing fees of 1.5–2.5% or higher describe her own business experience, not an industry-wide rate.

The Emily Post guide advises giving the tip before your nails are painted. Salon routines differ, so check with the staff if you are unsure when or how to pay.
What if you are unhappy with the service?
You are not obligated to tip a particular percentage if the result or service disappoints you. Samantha Hanby, owner of Polished Nail Salon in Oklahoma City, told NerdWallet that a customer may not feel obligated to tip when unhappy with a service. Consider explaining the issue to the salon and giving honest feedback; the amount, if any, remains your decision.

Does the advice apply outside the U.S.?
The percentages above are U.S.-oriented etiquette guidance and expert opinion, not a universal custom. A November 2025 survey by Ipsos B&A for Ireland’s Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) covered a different population and combined hairdresser, beauty-service, and nail-salon visits.
Among the 1,048 survey respondents, 82% of those who used these services said they tipped at least some of the time. Among respondents who used the services and tipped at least some of the time, 36% reported tipping less than 10%, 39% reported 10–14%, 5% reported 15–19%, 4% reported 20% or more, and 16% said they did not tip as a percentage of the bill. These are Ireland results for a combined service category—not nail-salon-only figures or a U.S. tipping rule. The CCPC/Ipsos survey deck provides the study details.
